It's common in here in Canada too, it's called "common law" marriage I believe, it happens automatically after seven years of continuous cohabitation. The tradition is so old among the indigens that almost all tribes were matrilineal. Who knew or cared who their father was/wasn't? A person was from their mother's clan, here Wolf or Raven. Children lived in their mother's house. Men moved into the house of their wife's mother. The eldest daughter inhereted the clan house, and so on. Very practical in a mobile trading culture. Another long standing tradition is that Wolf marries Raven or vs; marrying into the same clan is still 'frowned upon' by the elders.
