    3. I have been reading some stuff on Clarion Newsgroups and it seems that the triple combination of XP with Norton Anti Virus and Clarion programs may cause some troubles. I am still exploring the Windows XP / Clarion connection. Ira ------------------------------------------------ Mr. Ira J. I am using Norton Anti Virus, but it is not active and it makes no change if I disable it. My CFT program exports only about 120-150 individuals pr. minute. I notice that the HD is working constantly all the time. Windows tells me that CFT is running a proces 'cft.exe', which uses only abt. 5% of the CPU power, the rest is assigned 'active systemproces', whatever that may be. It is remarkable the Windows also tells me that the very CFT program changes from 'running' to 'not responding' as soon as the Gedcom export starts. I have no other programs running during the Gedcom export, but there are of course a lot of open Windows processes. They don't use any CPU capacity as far as I can see. I have tried an export of the same (similar) database from another genealogi program. It uses abt. 95% CPU power and it finishes the export in less than 2 minutes. This program stays 'running' during the export. Hope these observations may be of some help. I am prepared to give more details if possible. Erik

    3. Sometimes programs, such as AV programs, cause conflicts even if not activated or enabled. Norton AV has always been one of those programs that cause certain conflicts, just by being on the system! You might take Ira's advice and down- load and install "Windows XP Application Compatibility Update [Q31958]. It just might help! 3. Hi Erik I use CTFW 3.13, WinXP Pro, P4-2.4MHz 512MB and my database of 900 people exports in 4 seconds flat, and the "cftw.exe" process remains at 99% with a "Running" status throughout. 'activesystemproces' doesn't sound like a process that should be on your system. I could not find any reference to this name with an internet search, but it is possible that you mat have some adware/spyware on your PCs. Even if CFTW for some reason wasn't fully utilizing the full processor resources, then the "System Idle Process" should be taking up the balance. Here are some suggestions: 1) Has service pack SP1 been installed onto your PCs? I would recommend that SP1 be applied to all XP systems, as this did include many compatibility fixes. Go "Start|Control Panel|System" and the "General" page will tell you if "Service Pack 1" is installed. 2) Are the folders/files where CFTW is installed or where you data resides marked "read only"? Perhaps you copied some data back from a CD which would keep the "read only" status of the folders/files. This can sometimes cause a problem, especially if the application creates intermediate files when doing something. 3) Do you have a adware/spyware detecting/removal program? You can download a free version of "Ad-Aware" from http://www.lavasoft.nu/. The latest version is 6.0 build 6.181. Install it, and immediately use the "Check for updates now" function, which will download the latest definition file. Then press "start" and then "next" to check your system. The free version doesn't remain resident, so you need to manually run it quite frequently to keep your system clean. 4) Some viruses attempt to disable your antivirus program, so it is possible that you may have a virus that is hiding itself. You can download a free manual checker from http://www.vintage-solutions.com/English/Antivirus/Super/index.html. This just scans for viruses, and what is really nice about it, is that can look at messages inside email files (*.pst, *.mbx, *.dbx files) (by checking the "email check" option), which most other antivirus program do not do. It also simply unpacks itself to your temporary folder when you run the program, and when it is finished it completely removes all traces of itself - nothing is actually installed on your computer. Sometimes it is nice to get a second opinion on the virus state of your machine, and because it is never installed on you PC, viruses cannot interfere with it. It is normally updated once a week on a Friday. John Smith Pretoria, South Africa
