Part of the problem here is space - not enough space allocated tokeep things lined up in columns. One idea would be rather than making the place name line up in a column have it appended to the date. Then you'd see things like: Birth: betw 4 Jul 1888 and 24 Jul 1888 Nashville, Davidson, Tennessee Marriage: 20 Jul 1888 Clarksville, Montgomery, Tennessee Death: aft 1950 Hopkinsville, Christian, Kentucky Then long dates wouldn't get in the way of lining up the Place name column.
