Yes, it makes sense that if you delete a source, then that source no longer exists so any reference to it has to go also. What you should do is use the MERGE sources button. This causes all references to a given source to be moved to another source that is basically identical and then delete the extra source. Hope this helps. To my great dismay, I have found that they are not only deleted from the Source list, they are also deleted out of the main program, so that some of my data that previously had sources given, now has none.
