I have appreciate the repetition concern but find it very easy to copy and paste the entire report to word.doc - then editing by deletions becomes fairly easy. -----Original Message----- From: walterboswell [mailto:hogdu26@knology.net] Sent: Tuesday, June 21, 2005 8:03 AM To: CFT-WIN-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [CFTW] Descendant Story I agree. CFTW is the best overall genealogical program on the market, but the style in which the reports are written could use a whole lot of improvement. walt boswell ----- Original Message ----- From: "koalamoore" <koalamoore@netzero.com> To: <CFT-WIN-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, June 21, 2005 8:36 AM Subject: [CFTW] Descendant Story > I really like to use the descendant story when people request info from me, > but I really dislike the way it is so repetitive. I do that, of course, but it is rather time consuming for a man with 20/200 and 6/200 vision acuity. I only wish that the Descendant Story format in CTW was rather like the Descendant Report in FTW. It's the only thing FTW has going for it. ;-)) Oh, well. I don't know whether this helps or you are already doing this, but you could probably reduce the amount of eyeballing required by getting your PC to do some of the work in the word processed document. I haven't tested this idea out but I am pretty sure it would work. I assume that the text that is repeating is, in fact, identical? 1. Visually find the first occurrence 2. Highlight that piece of text and do Ctrl+C to copy it 3. Do Ctrl+H to invoke search and replace. 4. Move your cursor to the 'Text to find' box and press Ctrl+V to paste the text from step 2 5. Move your cursor to the 'Replace With' and enter a space (see note 1 below) 6. Press the OK button. 7. Windows should now start to find each occurrence of the text and you will then have the option to delete them selectively or all at once (see note 2 below) Hope I am not teaching you grandma to suck eggs. I realise that with visual acuity problems you might still have a challenge with this idea, but at least you will only have to eyeball the search text once. Note 1 Your PC might not like replacing the text with a regular space. If that is the case you can try using what is called a hard space. It looks the same but the PC treats it differently! To generate a hard space, hold down the ALT key then enter 255 on the numeric keypad (NOT the numbers above the alpha keys.) Then release the ALT key. Note 2 Be careful how you use 'replace all' or you will lose the occurrence that you want to keep. It is probably better to use selective replacement. Try this. Start your search and replace from the second occurrence. Replace them selectively. When Windows gets to the bottom of the document it will then go back to the beginning of the document. That will be a great clue that you should stop! Your PC may even stop at that point and say 'Windows has finished searching the document do you want to start again from the top,' or words to that effect, which is an even better clue. But if you get over enthusiastic with the find and replace, and accidentally delete them all, you still have the text in the PC's copy buffer, so if you go to where you need to reinstate it, Ctrl+C should do the trick.
