Could any CFTWer tell me the origin of the female name Aletta and whether it might be related to Elizabeth? The Aletta in question was Dutch/Afrikaans. Her full name was Aletta Catharina JACOBSZ (1859-1946) of Senekal, Orange Free State, South Africa. (In 1880, she married a great-granduncle of mine.) Last week, I heard from an Elizabeth ("Elsabe") Catharina (surname withheld), who lives in the U.S. and whose mother's maiden name was JACOBSZ. She, too, was from Senekal and I am trying to determine if these JACOBSZ families might be related.
