In CFT there is not separate field for these and it is really up to you how they are entered. Tow possibilities come to mind. One idea is to enter them as part of their full name. I tend to not want to do that as it makes searching on given name impossible if a title is entered in front of a given name. The other idea is to simply enter the full name given at birth and to write about the titles and honors in the notes or in an additional event (such as a military event). Thanks Ira. I had originally entered it all in the name fields but, as you said, this caused problems with name searching so I had already moved the info out into a notes field. That was a good guess on my part! The issue with titles is such a rarity that I can see that there is little justification for a special field. Perhaps the situation is slightly different with Suffices for degrees, memberships and medals. In these times when college and university attendance is relatively high, I suspect a lot of people end up with some sort of suffix. All these suffices could be dealt with in one, multi value field perhaps? Just a thought... ... ... -----Original Message----- From: Ira J Lund [mailto:ira.lund@cf-software.com] Sent: 16 May 2005 13:48 To: CFT-WIN-L@rootsweb.com Subject: RE: [CFTW] Titles and Honours In CFT there is not separate field for these and it is really up to you how they are entered. G'day , > What's the best way to enter details of someone who has > military rank and a medal award. e.g. Lieut James Kennedy OBE RNR? Just for the record I am a naval (military) son of a naval father so have plenty of experience with Ranks=titles and honours=medals (well only a few of them). I have two USER ADDED Events: Promoted - PROM - %N was promoted %M, %D p{at} %P. Awarded honour - AWRD - %N was awarded the %M %D p{at} %P. The Place has never been used so far. I also have another for: Posting - POST - %N was posted %D p{to} %P m{as} %M. But that can also be used for any "itinerant" employee ;-) Mike CALDER http://members.optusnet.com.au/mikecalder/ Researching: CALDER, DIXON, TUSON, GRACIE D&GFHS #2979
Oh, now that's very interesting. I like the sound of that. It's not that I have a lot of these to deal with, but I do like elegant solutions. Many thanks.
