We work mostly on Linux, and no emulator so far has managed to run Cumberland properly, so I have to switch back and forth from Linux to Windows which is, let's say, a pain. My fervent wish is that someone expert enough sets about creating a version that will run happily on Linux. Or is this a forlorn hope? Gwyneth
I know that this is off topic but I think there is a Brazilian subscriber to this list who might be able to help me. I am translating the 1850 diary (from Danish) of my gg uncle. He is in Brazil, first at Bahia and then Maceio and finally Rio de Janeiro before moving on to Valparaiso. The diary mentions many small towns which I can't find in my atlas. Is there a detailed on-line map of the areas that I am interested in? I have been unable to find one. If someone can help me please reply off list. Have you tried Win4Lin from NeTraverse? It allows you to install a full copy of Windows 95, or 98 or ME (not XP) and then run Windows applications. I am using it for CFTW and AutoCAD. http://www.netraverse.com/index.php Dr Gwyneth Daniel wrote: > We work mostly on Linux, and no emulator so far has managed to run > Cumberland properly, so I have to switch back and forth from Linux to > Windows which is, let's say, a pain. > > My fervent wish is that someone expert enough sets about creating a > version that will run happily on Linux. > > Or is this a forlorn hope? > > Gwyneth > > > > ==== CFT-WIN Mailing List ==== > You can contact the List Manager at: > CFT-WIN-admin@rootsweb.com > > ============================== > Gain access to over two billion names including the new Immigration > Collection with an Ancestry.com free trial. Hi Ian, Have you tried www.mapquest.com? Here's a map of part of Brazil. You can copy and paste this in the address line. Once you get the map, you can click on the arrows on the top, bottom or sides to show more on the North, South, East or West. Hope that this helps you. Hello Vic, You may not be able to see cft.exe as such in the folder used for CFTW as your folder display settings may be preventing it. Do not worry about that aspect of things. If you have downloaded the 3.14d version from the website www.cf-software.com/CFT314d.zip you need to unzip this file so that its contents are placed into the folder where you have CFTW. Presumably you were able to open the zip file in your earlier attempt. This may generate a message asking if you wish to overwrite cft.exe. Respond Yes to this. In running CFTW you should then be on the updated version. If that does not help, then you need to give us more information, but try the above first. Ira, All these problems have been fixed in 3.14.d - thanks Russell -----Original Message----- From: Russell Hartnoll [mailto:russhart@paradise.net.nz] Sent: Sunday, 29 February 2004 10:04 a.m. To: 'CFT-WIN-L@rootsweb.com' Subject: RE: [CFTW] Problem with "Rebuild Indexes" I am unsure if the following errors are new to the "lighter" version of CFTW.exe or were there before and I hadn't noticed. 1. If I open the Place or Misc Editor I get the following message "STOP. Word not found in Language file. Word code 350932" Abort or Ignore. Ignore allows the editor to be opened. 2. When ANY Editor is opened, I make a selection and click on List, I get the same message but with Word code 350933. 3. When I select List in ANY Editor the Icons at the top of the window indicate "Close", "Jump to Individual Highlighted", and "Print". However the captions show "Close", "Close", and "Print". Hi Ira, I just downloaded the latest version from the site, but it still says 3.14.c on the About screen. For your information, my database is now 55,000 people, and I use it on two PC's running 2000 & XP. With this database size it is slow on both for Gedcom exports and also Selection List management. Did you review the buffering for the Selection Lists too? Where the database was closed and then reopned (not noticable by the user) but when reopened after the rebuild it is not issued a STREAM which allows disk buffering. I noticed this when editing a Selection List where the saving "flies" prior to a Rebuild and then the disk thrashes after a Rebuild. Same kind of action you describe with the GED problem. The new CFT.EXE has been a real improvement, but I still have serious problems. The Gedcom export function is unstable, it sometimes works at full speed, but it just as often slows down. Sometimes it even causes the PC to freeze. The export usually works well right after a fresh boot, with CFT running as the first and only program, but after a while, still with CFT being the only program, the problem starts, apparently at random. I have not been able to find any consistent pattern as to when or why the export slowes down. The PC uses only abt. 5% CPU power at the slow speed, and I wonder why. The only reason I can see is that the excessive Harddisk access limits the speed. Does the CFT program forget to use the RAM ? I have no other programs running at the same time and I have stopped as many processes as possible. Norton Antivirus is removed, although I have no firm evidence of its influence. I also tried to run CFT in the PC 'Safe mode'. In that case the Gedcom exports seemed to work only at slow speed. None of those measures have a clear effect on the problem. The experiments are all made on my stationary PC. My portable PC (also with WinXP) will never operate the export at full speed, it always insist on running at slow speed. Thanks to Ira and all Users, especially George W. Durman and John Smith, for your help and interest in this strange problem and for all your suggestions. My I hope for more help? Erik
On Ver 3.14.d the database should be buffered at all times. So I do not think there should be a problem with Selection Listss etc. I also have 45,000 and Sel List loading and saving is slow just because of the database size. One of these days I will have to see if I can rewrite the routine so as to not need to load to QUEUEs - to make the Sel List Routines faster. Actually I updated the setup program, but not the small cftw.exe until now. Here is the URL to download just the cftw.exe: www.cf-software.com/CFT314d.zip Case matters so enter exactly as shown or copy and paste to Web Browser. The codes 350932, 350933 and 350934 are present in the language editor when I use the old CFT.EXE - and I have translated them to Norwegian. But when I overwrite the old CFT.EXE with the new one, these word codes do not come up when I open the same language file in the language editor . I have tried to overwrite the new CFT.EXE with the old one, and the word-codes are there and the pop up window disappears. It does not matter which language I use - English, Norwegian, Danish. Hi No you are not alone - I get an identical error message. I use XP and haven't experienced any of the problems that have been discussed on the list - I read the comment about the seconds delay in the list of names appearing when doing a names search and thought I would try to alleviate this. I have no problems at all with Ira's wonderful programme. It amazes me how he responds to all the minor problems, etc., published on the list - I do not know of any other commercially available software where the actual writer of the program is so available and willing to help their "customers". Ira, keep up the excellent work, I for one certainly appreciate all you do for us - you have helped me in the past when I thought my problem was almost insurmountable, but it wasn't thanks to your help and care. It cannot be run alone. Karen Pastuzyn Karen@pastuzyn.com
G'day Phil and Ira, > 1) I can see straight away when a record was changed and > which records were > changed on the same day. I was going to ask how but I now realise that it probably stores the information that is used to give the "Last Modified" in the View Modification Date. If this is so I would agree that it is quite useful although as you can see I haven't used it much. Later....Just took another look and see that it really ONLY records when I last opened the Edit Individual window as it assumes todays date even if I do NOT make any actual changes. If so it is really not all that useful :-( Could you confirm that the CHAN tag does this please Ira. Thanks for the explanations. Mike CALDER http://members.optusnet.com.au/mikecalder/
