It's an idea I can add to my list. It is a free format field in CFT. I even think I may have used it in my own database to enter something other than what would be considered a valid data, so it could be problematic to preserve some data. Ver 2 date field was pretty close to a free format text field. Ver 3 date field uses internally the UCC date type which is actually saved as 3 numbers - which makes for more accurate and easier calculations for ages, etc. So there is a very large difference in the way dates are internally saved between the two versions. So you request is not an easy one. In Ver 3 it won't allow you to enter a date that is day and month only. It will allow month and year only or year only - all because internal numbers and calculations that are part of UCC. So it is not as easy as it might appear - not saying it can't be done, but it all works differently. Will add to my list of ideas. Ira ------------------------------------------------ Mr. Ira J. One way to get rid of a redundant entry on the Windows "Add/Remove Programs" list is to use TweakUI (the Add/Remove tab). See http://www.annoyances.org/exec/show/tweakui Ciarán Ó Duibhín.
Walt, I looked at the properties for both programs - I'm in the same position, of wanting to uninstall the old version - and found that the 2.5 version lists itself as cftw32, and the new one doesn't. I assume that means the 32-bit version is the old one - but I'm waiting for someone else to confirm that before I remove anything! Ira and All When adding an event to an individual and citing the source under the source tag there are three options in the source details for Film/Vol/Page, Entry Date and Notes. I wondered if the entry date box could be formatted for date entry the same as the box under the general tab. Tim, I believe you are right. CFTW programs - both V.2 and V3 - does not 'install' in the Windows way, they are just sitting there in there folders with an .exe file and all the other files they need, waiting for someone making them run. As easy as in the good old DOS days. And Walt, in that case you just have to identify the folder with the V.2 version (use Windows Explorer as sugested), mark it and hit Delete - and it disappears (into the waste basket). Ira and Friends, Every once in a while I like to enter a date (such as today's date) and see what family events occurred on that date. It is easy in V2: just type, say, 26 Mar at top and check the box for Events > Date. It just takes a few seconds and lists all the BMD events that took place on that date. But when I try this in V3, there is no corresponding Date entry, only Free Format Date, which is not relevant--it take several minutes and does not return any hits. Can this inconsistency be addressed or am I missing something? Rgds, Jon
The prior two responses are correct. I have kept CFT self-contained and don't put any files anywhere on the hard drive except in the CFT folder. So simply deleting the entire CFT folder for Version 2 using Windows Explorer gets rid of it. I also thought that on the Start Menu - Programs - Cumberland Family Tree there will usually be an Uninstall. Use that one and all should work well. The only problem that I know of with the folder deletion approach is that the newer operating systems to end up placing any installed programs on the Install/Remove list and I am thinking that when you manually delete the program and folder as first suggested, then the program may still be showing up on that Windows install/delete list as if it were still there on the computer when it really is not. In such a case I am uncertain how one would get it off the list, but at least the program won't be taking up space on the hard drive and you can ignore the install/delete list. Hi, Gang-- I've got a very stupid problem here, but then I'm a very stupid fellow. So: all's right with the world. Here's the way it stacks up. I have both Versions 2.50x (actually 2.29x) and 3.14 d installed on my computer. A few days ago, I decided to go ahead and uninstall Version 2.50x, but when I clicked on ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS on the Control Panel, I found the following program descriptions: Cumberland Family Tree Cumerbland Family Tree [32-bit] Since both programs are 32-bit, I don't know which program is which. Naturally, I'm not looking to send 3.14 d into the nexus between Now and Never. Can anyone please tell me which of these program descriptions I should click on in order to uninstall Version 2.50x? Or should I just call "discretion the better part of valor" in this situation and leave both programs alone? I tell you. My mother finds it awfully hard to be proud of her oldest these days. You would need to firstly have a PDF creator installed on your system and then simply open the WMF file and print it to the PDF creator. But to be honest, if you have that then you might as well print the report directly to the PDF and ignore the WMF file. I can't imagine it would make commercial sense for Ira to add PDF creation support to the programme as the cost of adding this in license fees alone to Adobe would be high. My advice to you is to get a PDF writer of some sort and simply use it as a printer when generating reports from CFT. I think you will find a suggestion in the CFT Manual but I use pdfFactory from FinePrint. http://www.fineprint.com/index.html Trial version prints a small banner on each page. Purchasing will remove the banner. I used the trial version free for a few months but then found it so useful for all sorts of documents for "official" purposes that I paid my $US 49.95 to get rid of the banner. I hate to belabor the point, but someone who either is, or was, a subscriber to this List is infected with the following Worm: Win32.Netsky.D@mm Whoever that person is, he/she has email sitting in his/her email program, or has addresses of users of this List in his/ her Address Book. The Netsky Worm picks out an address from one of those emails, or from the Address Book, to put in the From: header; it then picks out another address to send itself to. Whoever is infected has my address in his/ her Address Book, or has an email from me in his/her email program. He/she also has many foreign (to the US) addresses in the Address Book, or email from foreign addresses in the email program. The reason I'm certain it is someone who is, or was, subscribed to this List is that it's the only one I have ever used for which most of the subscribers are located in European countries. You may think it's no big thing, but I despair of receiving so many emails daily from some European-based ISP saying my email to so-and-so contained an infected attachment. So, will anyone who fits one of the following categories please get rid of the infection: 1) Doesn't have an Anti-Virus (AV) program; 2) Has one, but doesn't use it; 3) Has one, uses it, but doesn't have the latest virus files from the AV company; 4) Doesn't have the AV program to automatically scan the system daily, or doesn't do a manual scan daily. We've got to stop this Virus/Worm problem! The only way to do it is use an AV program properly and clean out the system of all infections. Thank you, George W. Hi Jerry For all Individual in your database, when you open the Individual Editor you have at left of window opened, under column Event, an event TITL ? Hi Listers It seems to me that there was a standard event called Title in the previous versions which is no longer there in the latest release 3.14. Or maybe I created it and don't remember? In any case what is the meaning of an event showing in brackets <TITL> in the Edit ndividual window? I suspect the program is telling me the event is no longer available as it is not listed in the standard events window. If it was there as a standard event will it be put back? If I created the event why is it no longer there? I have done no editing to the CFT folder except for installing new releases. Your thoughts please. Jerry In Beautiful BC
