Hello Jon Follow "Tools, Global Search" When this window opens click on the tab "Date Search" Both "Start Date" and "End Date" fields have to be filled in. For a single day both date fields would have the same date. Also a full date must be used e.g. 01 Jan 2005. Jerry Port Coquitlam B.C. Hi Paul, With the person to whom you wish to attach a spouse as the key individual, press the O key to get Other Marriages. From there the Add icon allows you to add a new individual or to connect to an existing one through either IRN or name search. Other suggestions a) Use a USB pen drive b) use a utility that will chop the file up across several floppies (do a google on 'File Chopper') c) If both PCs have firewire cards, link them together with a firewire cable and copy the files that way d) eMail the files from you old PC to your self an receive the email on you new PC (not all of these are easy, mind you! Option a is one of the easiest and pen drives are soooo cheap these days. I recently bought a 1 GB one for GBP60, so you could probably get a 128Mb one for GBP20) -----Original Message----- From: Ian Westergaard [mailto:ian.westergaard@ihug.co.nz] Sent: 12 January 2005 02:21 To: CFT-WIN-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [CFTW] transferring data Hi Margaret I guess you are trying to copy to a floppy which can only hold 1.44 Mb and the file is bigger than this.. Hi Margaret If you use a GEDCOM file for transfer you may lose some information that does not comply with the GEDCOM standard. Here is another way. Set up a folder on your new computer for the CFTW database file. I call my folder "CFTW" and it is in "My Documents" - this makes it easier to find and backup on a regular basis. Copy your database file (it has a ".cft" extension) from your old computer onto a CD or floppy. Copy the file from CD or floppy to the folder you set up on your new computer. Open CFTW and click on "Browse" at the top of the small database selection window. Browse to your CFTW folder and double click on your data file which will then appear in the selection window. Click on "Select and your database will load into CFTW. I assume you have been using version 3.1x? For creating SMALL genealogical diagrams by input from scratch, I recommend GenoPro (http://www.genopro.com/). Very easy to use and very nice results. I have to warn however that the free version USED to install adware. I don't know if it still does, but I haven't seen the subject discussed recently in the discussion boards, as it used to be. In any case it is well worth getting the full version, GenoPro Gold, $24, which never had any such problems. I said "small diagrams" and "from scratch", but in fact you can import your whole tree into GenoPro via gedcom. The layout is a mess, of course, since the imported information doesn't say where to place the individuals. You can sort the layout out by hand, and the result can be very satisfying, but when you have changed your tree in CFTW and want to reimport it, you have to sort the layout out all over again. So I don't recommend this for making a diagram of a large part of your tree, except for a special occasion, or unless you are prepared to maintain your data separately in CFTW and in GenoPro, which is what I do. Of course another way to make a small diagram is to import the lot and delete everything you don't want. Ciarán Ó Duibhín.
I have done this recently. All you need to do is to copy the whole folder and sub folders, excluding the CFT executable, into the new location Your new installation should have all the necessary pointers to the correct places But, as always, when doing serious stuff like this, make sure you back up your data before you proceed so that you have a fallback position. If you don't backup and something goes wrong, or my instructions don't work, you need to be able to recover the situation -----Original Message----- From: hgd [mailto:hgd@shaw.ca] Sent: 09 January 2005 20:15 To: CFT-WIN-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [CFTW] transferring data Hi Ian and Margaret If you are going to transfer the.cft file as Ian has suggested I believe you also have to include the stdevents.tps, ucc.tps and the personal.dic as well.
