Scott -----Original Message----- From: Juan Du [mailto:jdujojo@yahoo.co.uk] Sent: Monday, June 13, 2005 11:42 AM To: CFT-WIN-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [CFTW] questionnaire of internet genealogy users requirement survey Juan Du C/O Jeff Jones IMC, WMG University of Warwick CV4 7AL jdujojo@yahoo.co.uk Dear user: As part of my Masters degree in Electronic Business Management at Warwick University I am undertaking a study of the use of the internet for genealogical purposes. The purpose of this study is to identify the way in which genealogical internet sites make money and to understand the customer base. To facilitate this study you are invited to participate in an email survey questionnaire which is designed to investigate the user requirements for internet genealogy such as searching for ancestor history data, finding people, creating your family website and designing a family tree. In this survey, there are 20 questions and it will take approximately 10 minutes to complete. Your participation in this survey is voluntary but would be appreciated. If you take part and provide a contact email address a copy of the analysis of the survey will be sent to you upon completion. If at any time you feel uncomfortable answering any of the questions then please just ignore it and carry on with the next question. The information and opinion you provide will extremely helpful for me to better conduct the study and better understands the user requirements of genealogical websites. Your responses will be strictly confidential and data from this research will only be used in the final report of the project dissertation. If you have any questions about the survey, you may contact Juan Du using the above contact detail or my project supervisor Jeffrey Jones at J.A.Jones@warwick.ac.uk. Please contact me at my email address and I will provide you with a copy of the survey via email. The survey is a word form and has been checked for all known viruses Thank you very much for your time and support. Sincerely Juan Du --------------------------------- Yahoo! 3. It's sounds like Juan's thing is a scam of sorts to extract info. There are presently Ancestry, MyFamily, RootsWeb and hundreds of other web sites furnishing info and making a profit on genealogy. This, of course, is just my opinion. ***************************************************************** >From: "Ira J Lund" <ira.lund@cf-software.com> >Reply-To: CFT-WIN-L@rootsweb.com >To: CFT-WIN-L@rootsweb.com >Subject: RE: [CFTW] questionnaire of internet genealogy users requirement >survey >Date: Mon, 13 Jun 2005 17:09:40 -0500 >MIME-Version: 1.0 >Received: from lists5.rootsweb.com ([66.43.18.41]) by mc7-f13.hotmail.com >with Microsoft SMTPSVC(6.0.3790.211); Mon, 13 Jun 2005 15:10:22 -0700 >Received: (from slist@localhost)by lists5.rootsweb.com (8.12.8/8.12.8) id >j5DM9aN3023203;Mon, 13 Jun 2005 16:09:36 -0600 >X-Message-Info: 0jbW5ANosZLdBiXzR2mQJrMNrCS2GiPSgVvBBLHUXwA= >Resent-Date: Mon, 13 Jun 2005 16:09:36 -0600 >X-Original-Sender: ira.lund@cf-software.com Mon Jun 13 16:09:36 2005 >Old-To: <CFT-WIN-L@rootsweb.com> >X-Mailer: Microsoft Office Outlook, Build 11.0.6353 >X-MimeOLE: Produced By Microsoft MimeOLE V6.00.2900.2180 >Thread-Index: AcVwUc1cpbC/PnQ7R3mKuj9/hZaihQAEmqjw >X-Scanned-By: MIMEDefang 2.38 >Resent-Message-ID: <NxWkCC.A.8pF.gQgrCB@lists5.rootsweb.com> >Resent-From: CFT-WIN-L@rootsweb.com >X-Mailing-List: <CFT-WIN-L@rootsweb.com> archive/latest/7383 >X-Loop: CFT-WIN-L@rootsweb.com >Precedence: list >Resent-Sender: CFT-WIN-L-request@rootsweb.com >Return-Path: CFT-WIN-L-request@rootsweb.com >X-OriginalArrivalTime: 13 Jun 2005 22:10:23.0055 (UTC) >FILETIME=[B1B755F0:01C57064] > >George (CFT-Win List Administrator), > >Because of the nature of this query from someone who perhaps does not own >CFT, I was wondering if you could check to see if Juan is subscribed to the >List. 3. Hello Ira and/or Listers, I was wondering if you could help me with this one ....... A while back I had a corrupted database .. to cut a long story short I fixed it but the result was that I ended up with a full stop/period mark in EVERY empty Event record .. in my database there are about 112,500 of these 'notes' effectively in my Events .... There is a tool to change these, but from one character to another, but not to a blank event note, which is what I want ...... Any idea on how I can clear this out, other than delete each one ??? Many thanks and all the best, Hugo Slater ----- Original Message ----- From: "Ira J Lund" <ira.lund@cf-software.com> To: <CFT-WIN-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, June 08, 2005 2:40 PM Subject: RE: [CFTW] Help -

    3. The file called stdevents.tps is the one affected. If you have a copy of that somewhere else you can simply copy it from elsewhere. If ANUL was the event you deleted and you have actually never really used that event in any of your genealogy database then it doesn't really harm anything. You could simply forget it and stop worrying about it. That is if you think you'll never really use that event. 3. I'm talking about an event from the standard events list - so a global deletion of that event. Although I can't be sure whether the event I deleted was a standard gedcom, a cft standard, or one I added. I'm trying to figure that out. 3. Hello. I accidentally deleted an event. I intended to delete a specific event and I clicked OK after the warning. I thought that was the OK for the warning so I clicked delete again and OK again - deleting a second event! The problem is I don't even know what event I deleted so I can't guage the impact of this error. I immediately restored a backup of my .cft file but the event is still gone. Do I have any chance of fixing this? I am running version 3.14d. Thank you, Deena

    3. Are you talking about the "Standard Events" from the Option Menu - Standard Event Editor. Or are you simply referring to an event in an Individual Window? If it was the Standard Events you could simply re-install the program and it will place the Stdevent.tps file back in the folder. If the second, you can't really recover from that as it would be an event you added to a person and there is no way we would know. 3. Hi All, If I could add my two cents worth. I use CFTW for my own genealogy data and would not move away from it, but I have established and maintain a website for another persons database using TNG. For those interested it is www.genealogics.org. I have modified the code somewhat, but it provides an excellent presentation. 3. Thanks for the compliments. No, I am not working on an upgrade to the program at present. Have not had the time. Search capabilities are beyond simple HTML. There is a rather nice program called TNG that you might want to look at to publish on the web: http://lythgoes.net/genealogy/software.php This program is only $27, so it is not very expensive and puts up a rather nice and full featured web site. In the positive reactions I received on this site, there were also questions about expanding search- possibilities e.g. by "locality" or "date" for certain "events". Something like your "global search". Can you add this on your wish-list, for a new release. Are you already working on a new release? 3. G'day , > What's the best way to enter details of someone who has > military rank and a medal award. e.g. Lieut James Kennedy OBE RNR? Just for the record I am a naval (military) son of a naval father so have plenty of experience with Ranks=titles and honours=medals (well only a few of them). I have two USER ADDED Events: Promoted - PROM - %N was promoted %M, %D p{at} %P. Awarded honour - AWRD - %N was awarded the %M %D p{at} %P. The Place has never been used so far. I also have another for: Posting - POST - %N was posted %D p{to} %P m{as} %M. But that can also be used for any "itinerant" employee ;-) Mike CALDER http://members.optusnet.com.au/mikecalder/ Researching: CALDER, DIXON, TUSON, GRACIE D&GFHS #2979
