Since Sigurd kindly replied to Ira's query to me about GEDPAGE, there's not much to add except, yes, it is downloadable shareware and it was Judie Abson's use of and help with GEDPAGE that inspired me to have a go at it. The relevant addresses again: GEDPAGE is at http://www.fontiernet.net/~rjacob/gedpage.htm Judie's Genealogy (from Ira's pages)- http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Ranch/7619 ... and my own use of GEDPAGE is at http://home.att.net/~emquad/surnames.htm In the current version 2.00 there's a neat feature that allows use of your exported sources and general notes, although I chose not to use this option. I got best results from CFTW by exporting 5.5 and ANSI. I also chose in CFTW to suppress living persons. Works just fine. Ira and All, I have been adding a lot of new individuals, of whom I do not know very much so far, lately to my database. As default individual standard events I have Birth and Death, and as default family standard event I have Marriage. Now, while adding those new persons I normally know their date of birth and / or their date of death. So that is what I normally enter first. Then I sometimes know the name of the spouse, but often not the date of marriage. Therefor, after entering the name of the spouse, the marriage event appears in the events list of both individuals, but always at the bottom of the list, after the death event. Now I wonder, would it be possible if a family event (especially marriage) is added automatically, to have it added not at the bottom of the events lists, but (at least) before the death event? Or is this a strange wish? (Of course I could extend my wish for any event that normally takes place before death, but for most events we can use the "insert" option to get it in the right place). I know that I can sort event dates automatically, but unfortunately it often happens -as I mentioned- that I only know the name of the spouse and not (yet) the date of marriage. What is the experience of other users in this respect? Regards and "Happy Rooting" René Hasekamp P.S. Ira, you fixed some bugs (including my "rare" bug) very well in version 2.27. Thank you for that!
Is there any way of turning off the footer on each printed page. I think that it wastes a lot of space at the bottom of each page. This is especially so when I am doing printouts for myself. While I am at it, how about a descendant chart without the boxes. I have just came back to CFTW after using TMG for 3 months. Best program in the world? Well I do not thing so has some wonderful features but so slow and outputs a little average to say the least. Looking forward to Version 3 of CFTW, before I waste any more money on other "best programs" Barry Gardiner <color><param>0000,0000,ffff</param>PO Box 427 <underline>McLaren Vale South Australia 5171 </underline></color> One of the finest wine grape growing areas in the world. email address's barryg@cobweb.com.au barryg@terra.net.au Motto: Don't take life seriously. Alternately, is there a simple way to >pull out the pedigree of a given individual into a separate file? The standard Split Database facility does this very neatly. From the startup screen, select Split, nominate the Database to be split and a new name, then with the Mark Individuals button select the group of people you want. Check that there not already people marked, and use Unmark, All Records, Multiple to clear then. Then browse to the ancestor you wish to start with and use Mark, Descendants w/spouses, Multiple. With the new marking options Ira just added, you can vary the selection with the subsequent use of Unmark, Living, Multiple etc before you exit the marking screen. It works fine for me. I just upgraded to 2.27x and also combined my five databases of various family branches into one. I found that the program had difficulty attaching two together in some instances and either ended up with one individual (whose father had the same name) or after some diddling, different individuals, but with two sons, one from each database. I also had one instance where it refused to recognize one data base even though it could be accessed and seemed otherwise normal. I solved this by GED exporting and then importing into the combined one. All is more or less straight (I think!). My question now is that since some of the family members are showing an interest in obtaining a copy of mainly their own branches, whether there is some easy way to split without having to tediously mark each record. i.e. is there a way to take a great grandfather in one branch of the family and pullout all of his descendents? Of course many of the wives along the way have different names, but one should retain those as well. Alternately, is there a simple way to pull out the pedigree of a given individual into a separate file?
>There seems to be a new option in the "Tools" menu - called "Special". >It is the last line in that menu. > >I can not find anything about it in the Help file. Is it supposed to >do anything - or should it not be there at all? Doggoneit!!!! I was supposed to remove that before I released the program. Well, one day I shall have to add it is a special Tool. But in the meantime I will tell you what it is. I put it on when I was doing some work of my own. I wanted to add a particular source note to a large group of Indivdiuals. So instead of manually adding the source to a couple thousand people I created that little "special" tool. Enter the SOURCE NUMBER in the entry field and press the update button. ALL "marked" individuals will get that source attached to them. I guess all you on the list now know the little secret and can use it until next version when I get rid of it. I sure hope someone does not mess up their database by using it not knowing what it is (kind of worries me now). Ira P.S. Sigurd, thanks for the info on GEDPAGE. Sounds like a good deal. ---------------------------------------------------------- Ira J. The link to Gedpage 2.0: http://www.frontiernet.net/~rjacob/gedpage.htm Information from their webpage: Gedpage 2.00 will create your family tree webpage right from your GEDCOM file. Now you can display your genealogy data online for all to see...maybe a distant relative will find you! Uses Family Group Sheet format (familiar and easy to read). Uses less of your limited internet account disk space than most other converters. Almost half as much as GED2HTML! Fully linked, easy to traverse tree. User definable colors, and background. Allows link to your homepage. Supports Gendex. Optional notes, sources, and soundex codes. Allows you to modify text, even to another language. Automatically attach headers and footers. Registration is only $10 (US), and is good for all future versions! Regards Sigurd Eliassen Norway
Ira, There seems to be a new option in the "Tools" menu - called "Special". It is the last line in that menu. I can not find anything about it in the Help file. Is it supposed to do anything - or should it not be there at all? Regards Sigurd Eliassen Norway
update: I didn't reboot my computer after installing v2.27: after rebooting, the M or F doesn't overwrite the last number of the IRN. Just installed 2.27 for Win 95: In the Events List and the Place Name List, the Male or Female letter is overwriting the last number of the IRN. Also, the entire description of the EVENT is not printing: only part of the description is printing. Lunds fonts ARE correctly installed in \windows\fonts Karen Pastuzyn
I assume from looking at your site that GEDPAGE is a GED to HTML conversion program. Is it shareware or from a store? If shareware can you give me a link to get a copy? BTW, our pages do look nice. It had a surname and people list and a Family Group. Did it have any type of Pedigree (Ancestral) or Descendant type charts? Thanks, Ira At 09:16 PM 1/9/98 +0000, you wrote: >Thanks for 2.27, Ira. When you converted evrything to .bmp to you go back in and change the selction on the photo linked to the person? They may still be pointing at the .jpg files. Hope this helps! Normally that is the one format that has been the most trouble free. I have heard of troubles with PCX and BMP in the past - more so than other formats. The font uses only one of the LUND fonts. You cannot change this. The real question is: when you print it does it look fine? The 100% is closest to actual printing and in 70% or double page layout there will be unreadable and overlapping text, etc. It is not of concern IF printing is fine.
