    3. Ira and all I use Norton Crash Guard 2.0 and have NO problems with the automatic backup rutine. I use CFT 2.26x and do not delete the old ZIP before I exit and backup CFT. The new zip overwrites the old one. Archive on harddisk. Rolf

Want to give it a shot if I can get you to my great grandfather?

    3. >This is probably a funny time to start worrying about what happens when we >reach year 2000, having bought the CFT software and Since you enter your dates yourself and I have always instructed (in manual and help files) for people to always include 4 digit years, rather than 2 digit years this should never be a problem. It will be easy to go from 1999 to 2000. (The problem is with old systems that only showed 2 digit years - going from 99 to 00 - doesn't work mathematically.) Since genealogy normally spans several centuries (1900, 1800, 1700, 1600, etc.) most genealogy programs would always use 4 digit years and as long as users followed this advice (and most do) then there ought not be any problem with any genealogy program. I have had a look under Options at Database Configuration and the destination for the backup file is set as c:\cftw\databasename. If I try to change this to a:\ the computer crashes! Any suggestions? I think I can solve the problem by deliberately deleting any existing backup file with the same name before over-writing the backup file itself. Thanks for your comments. 3. Ira, I am running V2.27 32 bit, with Nortons Crash Guard, Nortons Utilities, Norton Anti Virus. I back up to the hard drive and sometimes to floppy as I put the information on a lap top from time to time when I want to show people remote from home. I have not had a problem with the backup at all. It will overwrite floppy or hard drive Ok if I do not change file name. If people have downloaded the "fix" on your site I would suggest that there is a problem with their system. 3. Yes, the backup problem does occur only when the file name is the same as the one it is trying to overwrite. I suspect that only those who responded had any problem and that most people do not have a problem. I think I can solve the problem by deliberately deleting any existing backup file with the same name before over-writing the backup file itself. Thanks for your comments. 3. Ira, I store "backups" on the same floppy disk until the disk is full, renaming each successive backup. I have encounter no problems whats so ever. I am using rev 2.4 win95 32 bit version. John Elliott -----Original Message----- From: Ira J. Lund <ira.lund@cf-software.com> To: CFT-WIN-L@rootsweb.com <CFT-WIN-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Wednesday, January 14, 1998 8:27 AM Subject: Backup Error I have recently been in communication with a person who it sounds like he and a number of others have had quite some troubles with the Backup Utility on CFT-Win. What happens is that it seems that once a backup to diskette is made, the second backup always gives a 160 error. My suggestion has always been to delete the backup file, then redo the backup and normally you no longer get the error. From everyone else in the past I have communicated with who had this problem, I had the impression that deleting the file once normally fixed the problem and further backups would successfully overwrite the prior backup file without error. However, this person seems to indicate that it basically happens all the time. This problem has never happened for me and I think most users never had this problem, but now I am starting to wonder how wide spread the problem is. Any comments on whether you've had this problem and whether once deleting the backup file cleared up the problem or if it continues would help me out here. I have the options set to routinely back up when closing the database. I have had no problems on any 32 bit version. It seems to make an ordinary zipped backup of the directory. (This was fortunate as reported earlier when the merged directory omitted the jpg images). I run First Aid, but not Norton's crash guard, or any virus checker except on load up when the system is turned on.

    3. Ira, I have had many problems with both the back-up and the rebuild features in CFT-Win. I would get the 'line 160 error' or some other line error. I have recently traced this problem back to Norton's "Crash Guard." Someone at Symantec (Norton) explained that your program must access files in such a way that the crash guard detects it as a possible crash. The program is halted and may actually write over the file trying to eliminate the detected "problem." I was told to turn off Crash Guard when running CFT-Win. I made the decision to remove all traces from my computer just in case. Since then I have not had the back-up or rebuild line error problem. Jack Bowman Hickory, NC Ira J.
