    1. CFT-Win 2.29x - Photo Pedigree Chart
    2. Jens Fleinert
    3. Hello Ira Just took the chance and installed above on top of 2.28. Initially all went fine, howver when I select Reports, Photo Pedigree Chart and a destinct IRN with plenty of direct relatives page 1 start as blank, page 2 looks ok and provide reference to what should have been on page 1 - ??? - If I check the Tree Structure everyone is there. Also some but apparently not all of Christenings dates was replaced with Death - from Danish Dåb to Død ! It is quite an effort to check odd 400 records ! - What to do - should I go back to ver 2.28 ? or do you have the explanation. Bugs - tracking/solving You mentioned some time ago, that you now experienced getting more new bugs for every single one you try to eliminate. I have similar (past experience from a large communication software development) - We stopped, went back to the best version, made a complete documentation, all links etc. Then we started again to track the bugs. Often one loose track - stop it now take a deep breath and do some internal homework. Rgds Jens Fleinert

In this case, you probably have the marriage events as you show in the second list. Re-arrange the order of the marriage events for the person and then things will print correctly. 2. Ian Marson
    3. Ira and All I have never had any problems doing an automatic backup when exiting CFT-WIN, however I have just upgraded from 2.27 to 2.29 and the 2nd time I exited from the program (ie: 2nd. backup) I got an error 160 message. It appears to happen every time now unless I delete the old zip file first. I have tried backing up to floppy and hard drive and it happens on both. Now there is no fonts directory at all. any files with an underscore (_) as the last of the three extensions is a "compressed" file. Somehow your program never installed properly and did decompress those four font files properly. It sounds like it was merely copied. In my tests they did work. Unless I hear others say they have seent he same thing, I assume that your download had problems. First try re-installing. If that's no help then maybe get a fresh download? The rest of the stuff you describe definately sounds like all files did not get installed properly. >The third anomaly may be that which appeared after I combined some data >files using version 2.27: There are many duplicate entries for births, >marraiges, and deaths. As far as I can see they are identical duplicates. >Is there any automatic way to search and select for these? I tried the >search command selecting on both full name and given names and for some >reason seem not to get any hits using several selections. This is the first >time I have tried that function. This problis related to the Merge Database. If events aren't strictly identical the merge will place a copy of the event from both databases. That sounds like what happened. By strictly identical I mean that if there is even one character different in the date, place, note or source then you'll get duplicates. No easy why to recover from this. In ver 3 I'd like to write a better merge. But for now my suggestion is to avoid a merge if you know there is a large overlap of people. In fact if you are quite certain that the overlap area is basically identical, then I suggest Splitting off from one the people who are not in the first and then merge that file. That way you will get a merge with only ONE identical between the two databases and thus will avoid this messy double event stuff. 3. Ira, I heva read the message below BUT: How should we update our language and Standard event files now (in version 2.29x)? I had version 2.27x, did not install 2.28x, and just installed 2.29x. When I copied my own language and standard events files over yours, I received an error message. So far so good, so then I re-installed 2.29x with your files, but now my custom added standard events are replaced by different ones! What to do next to get my custom events back? 1. Order of Marriages
    2. Tony de Bont
    3. G'day All Given that Ira has had a difficult week, I was wondering if one of you experienced people could help me out. I have observed a result that doesn't seem logical and I'm assuming I'm doing something wrong. I have a female who marries three times. In the main screen I have placed the marriages in the following order: MARDUEL - 1898 (First husband FRN-000062) COTTERILL - 1921 (Second husband FRN-000257) THOMPSON - 1940 (Third husband FRN-000258) When I print an INDIVIDUAL STORY of the lady's FATHER the details under her name are in the order COTTERILL THOMPSON MARDUEL This is not alphabetical by surname, it isn't chronological (my expectation), it is not the order listed in her record and it isn't in the order of the FRN (an outside possibility) What have I failed to do ?? I won't be back to my email for about a week, so don't rush a reply. Many thanks in anticipation. Tony de Bont

    1. Version 2.29 weirdness
    2. Joseph Cain
    3. Dear people, I had not had time to pay much attention to all the news mail I have been skimming over on 2.29 recently, but since I was on 2.27 I thought maybe it was time to upgrade. I removed the old program with Cleansweep so I could reinstall if needed, and installed from a copy of the individual disk files I downloaded. In the uninstall I kept the c:\program files\cftw directory and did not allow Cleansweep to zap it. I thus had a few files left including my own genealogy directory, now in one piece as suggested. The first thing I noticed was the error message "Lund fonts did not install properly...look for the four and copy from the cft-win program directory. (very loose translation)" Well, they are not on that directory, What I do find on the install files are the files Lunds.tt_,Lundsb.tt_,Lundsn.tt_ and Lundsnb.tt_, which appear to be the same files that I also see on the Cleansweep dump under the \Windows\fonts directory. Now there is no fonts directory at all. Are the ones from the 2.27 version identical to the ones with the tt_ suffix? Is there any problem in just copying in the tt_, renaming them with a ttf suffix? Is there any messing around with the registry that must be done? The second weirdness was that the little box that appeared after the install had the Cumberland Family tree icon with only the default Windows icon, not the one that remained on my tabletop with the little man. The uninstall icon was a garbage can...(must be a joke there somewhere). However, when I click on that new icon in the little box, I get the flashlight looking for the program, which I installed in c:\program files\cftw directory as before. I had no problem bringing the program into operation with the old icon still on the table top. Now for the real weirdness. When I right click on each of those icons and look at the properties, they are identical! When I "browse" to find the executable file the message pops up that it is writing fonts, after which it complains again that the fonts cannot be found. I gather that these fonts are for printing, right? (Of course it was easy to restore the icon on the program file line) The third anomaly may be that which appeared after I combined some data files using version 2.27: There are many duplicate entries for births, marraiges, and deaths. As far as I can see they are identical duplicates. Is there any automatic way to search and select for these? I tried the search command selecting on both full name and given names and for some reason seem not to get any hits using several selections. This is the first time I have tried that function.

    2. Ira J. Lund
    3. I guess today was the day when all this file transfer stuff finally hit me hard. Would you believe that so many people suddenly decided to send me large files I had almost 5Meg of messages and I have spent the whole evening trying to get at any of my e-mail. The whole system has just been choked on all this stuff. - even though I had a threshhold of about 200K max all that my system was supposed to accept. Finally, I think I have it cleared up. But I am posting this message here to notify everyone that I shall simply have to request that no one send me any data files (especially unwarned). I shall set my e-mail to 50K max on any message. If I must look at data in the future I shall have to ask for a mailed diskette. This is not the first time (only the worst time) that large data files e-mailed to me have caused me problems. Sorry to be complaining. It has not been a fun day. Ira ---------------------------------------------------------- Ira J. It has been there on and off since the beginning and I guess I have failed to remedy it. I did try something in 2.28 to see if it would help - but the solution to the problem is to delete the old backup before running the backup again. Not a nice solution I know. If you do NOT want any of the changes - ie, made changes like you did, then I suggest that you copy your saved STDEVENT.TPS and LANGUAGE.TPS from earlier versions AFTER the upgrade installation - rather than before. This will overwrite the master downloaded database with your own database. This works most of the time. However, it will not work for Ver 2.29 since I added a line for the new Fix Gender menu item in the LANGUAGE file and it will crash now with an older version of these files. 3. I'm sorry, but I cannot duplicate your problem. If I enter the edit window of a living person, the living flag is unchecked just for a second and then changes to being checked. 2. Ira, I am now having a backup problem with version 229X. Prior to this I have never had a problem when leaving the program and saying yes to have it backup. 3. Still in v.2.29 even though the correct values are stored in CFTW.INI (for me this means Maximize=[blank] X-pos=-2 Y-pos=-2 Width=320 Height=185) CFTW will not recognize the X and Y values when it opens (though it does recognize the Width and Height (I changed Height from 170 to 185). As I wrote, I cannot explain this. All versions prior to 2.28 did not have this problem and I maintain v.2.25 on my desktop, too - no problem opening it at the above settings. Otherwise, v.2.29 is just fine, thank you very much. J. ______________________________ | | | EMQUAD International, Ltd. | | P.O. 3. I am very careful on all version updates that I copy language.tps and stdeve.tps into the C:\cftw directory before evoking the program the first time. The program then acknowledges these files and keeps my additional events. However, why are my prepositions changed? I change each AT to IN in the standard events so that my stories read, i.e., was confirmed IN was buried IN was born IN died IN All those are changed to read, e.g., died AT born AT etc. on each upgrade! I thought the files language.tps and stdeve.tps were supposed to keep my changes. Could we make this happen in subsequent versions, please? Karen Pastuzyn

    3. NEW Ver 2.29 Now available on my Web Site (<http://www.cf-software.com/>www.cf-software.com) Version 2.29 Improvements (Updated February 20, 1998) * Living Flag in Individual Editor Fixed this bug which was introduced in 2.28. The problem was that the living flag was always unchecked whenever you edited a person. * Standard Events A couple of bad events were inadvertantly introduced in 2.28 which have now been removed. * New Ver 2.28 Fix Gender Option was released in 2.28 without ability to translate in other languages. This has now been added. (Code phrase: 12200) * Story Report: For Children with a name ending with a period (such as Jr.) and no further data, the story would show a double period (..) This has now been corrected. ---------------------------------------------------------- Ira J.
