Nope, program was there and could be brought up by the old icon, still on my tabletop. Both icons refered to same executable file! Really weird, but could be repeated. Oops, my message of last night got sent accidently. I was going to peruse the responses before sending but forgot. I frequently am unable to get a connection to internet in the evening due to terminal congestion so concoct messages on Eudora and send out the next morning (before students wake up). I saw the very good suggestion that I had not thought of regarding the old files, just unzip myself even though the program seems to have trouble so doing. Indeed, this worked fine. I can unzip and put a directory under c:\Proram Files\cftw and it will load ok from 2.27 (and probably would also from 2.29 were I to reinstall). However, when I set up to restore from the same zipped directory I yet get the indication of a restore, but it only adds the directory, but does not unzip..! (I plan to stick to 2.27 until something about it pains me or I hear an Eureka from the skunkworks and a new version or two with good reports from all.)

Yes, I run 226x and 229x parallel. Still I have the problem to adjust my custom-events to the new versions. Ira, how about implementing a custom-event file that can stay the same with new versions? Having given up on version 2.29 for now, especially since it did not seem to reload the old partial databases used to make my new combined one, I removed 2.29 using the new unistall icon and attempted to reload 2.27 from the Cleansweep backup. I noted that there were several files on the Windows directory it would not reload since they were already there, presumably not being removed by the uninstall. These included the 4 Lunds fonts. However, the program would not run since it could not find cw2run32.dll. I temporarily reinstalled 2.29 on the default directory and set the Cleansweep monitor to watch the install. However, it claimed that there were no data to record, and it had something to do with the program Regsvr32.exe, though I did not record the exact phrase used. I saw that indeed, there was a copy of cw32run32.dll on c:\cftw directory. However, I was unsure if it was the same as that for 2.27 so went to the back up tape, which included the system which contained 2.27. The file cw2run32.dll was there, and the size was identical to that on 2.29 (653,824 bytes). After reloading from the tape, 2.27 ran fine with the now combined database. There were no error messages about fonts as with 2.29. Also, so far there are no 160 errors on backing up the database. However, when I tried to obtain some of the old backup files, I started again having trouble. Initally it seemed to recover one, but after restoring another somehow the names got switched. i.e. it appears that you can load one database.zip file, but with another name. After looking at this one and removing it, the program will now no longer restore any of the partial databases that I created over last year but had used to combine into the now larger base. What happens now is that when I go through the motions for a restore by selecting a specific database (and entering the same name) it says that it was successfully restored, nearly instantly. However, all that it did was to create a file with that name, but no data below it. It is possible that these earlier backups were created with earlier versions of cftw and may be incompatible withe versions 2.27 or 2.29. Is this supposed to be the case? If I did wish to recover these, how would I do it? I no longer have tape backups of earlier versions of cftw. (I have also long since recycled the original floppy).
Good piece of description here. One big change I made concerning fonts was that I copy the LUND fonts to c:\windows\fonts at program startup (if they are not already there). Previously they were copied there by the install program. But I changed that because during uninstall it asked whether you wanted to delete c:\windows\fonts and some people deleted their entire font directory. I was trying to avoid anyone inadvertantly destroying their font directory but it looks like a new problem has been introduced. I wonder if CFT-Win does not recognize the fonts after it has already started: ie they need to be copied to c:\windows\fonts BEFORE CFT-Win starts up. But then all this works wonderfully on my computer (in fact two computers). I even tried it again just now. Delete LUND fonts from c:\windows\fonts. Run CFT-Win and then it tells me that the fonts were copied. I press OK and the program starts and all works fine!! What a mess!!! I hate these problems that aren't problems on my machine. I can have such a time trying to figure them out. No, I am very certain that 2.27 files can be read with 2.29. That's not the problem. The message means that there are no proper TPS files in the directory database you are trying to restore to. However, the restore should create such files if they do not exist. Or maybe I don't remember correctly. Now I wonder if the message means that no valid family tree files exist in the backup file. Can you use PKZIP or WinZip to view the backup to see if it is valid. You could unzip that way direct to a directory within CFT-Win. >Lastly, I had previously indicated that the Lund fonts were not on the >Windows\fonts directory so I would reload from the Cleansweep backup from >the 2.27 removal copy. I also suspect that your reports won't work properly. Try manually copying the files in Explorer from cft-win dir to \windows\fonts. This should install them. Hope that works. I'd like to know if it is successful. Ira ---------------------------------------------------------- Ira J. Try these instructions written by Karen Pastuzyn. Maybe this will help those having so much difficulty. =================================== Instructions for CFTW upgrades (Windows 95 and Win 3.1 instruuctions) for example purposes, we will assume that your data is in a directory called: c:\cftw\smith and that the program is installed in the default directory called c:\cftw (1) backup your data directory (2) if you have added events, make a copy of the files: c:\cftw\language.tps and c:\cftw\stdeve.tps (3) get your user registration code and keep it handy: in CFTW program, click HELP, User Code (4) download the upgrade zipped file(s) into some directory (5) use an unzipping program to decompress the downloaded zipped upgrade into a directory: for example, EXTRACT into C:\cft229 once unzipped, you can delete the .ZIP files (6) use the uninstall program supplied with CFTW to deinstall the older version (it is not recommended to use a deinstall utility): the uninstall program which comes with CFTW does a clean job of deinstalling CFTW. (note: if you get the message to delete the directory c:\windows\fonts answer NO to this prompt) (7) RUN the install of the new version: WIN95: START RUN c:\cft229\install.exe Win 3.1x: FILE RUN c:\cftw229\install.exe (when prompted for disk 2, click OK) (8) before running the new version do this: COPY your saved language.tps and stdeve.tps files into the directory c:\cftw restore your backuped data into the directory c:\cftw\smith (use your specific named directory!) (9) Run the new version: it will recognize your added events and set your program defaults if you want it to open your personal database. ---------------------------------------------------------- Ira J. His is faster than mine so I wanted to test the program on his machine. I tried all the tricks I know, but nothing seemed to help. No program could find the Lund fonts even if they were in c:\windows\fonts - and I had doble clicked on all of them etc. At last I tried the following - which helped for one reason or another: 1) I right-clicked on the first Lund-font. 2) Then I chose Properties 3) I checked the Hidden-box to activate the Apply-button 4) I unchecked the Hidden-box and pressed the Apply-button Step 1-4 were repeated for all four fonts. After that the fonts were found by cftw and other programs. When we started the computer to day, however, they didn't work and I had to repeat the described procedure once more. If this is related to Windows or the Lund-fonts, I don't know. But we probably have to expect some strange problems when a virus has become the most common operative system in the world - as the Linux-folks say.;-) Regards Sigurd Eliassen Norway
I just reinstalled 2.29 from a freshly loaded single file (last time I had downloaded two separate files, copied to 3.5" disk and installed from them). I first tried to install without removing the old 2.29 version and it installed so fast it was obvious nothing new was copied. I then used the unistall icon using the option not to remove the directory c:\program files\cftw. I get the same idiosyncrasies as before: 1) When you click on the icon in the new Cumberland Family tree box it thinks it cannot find it so starts looking with its little flashlight. The icon has the generic Microsoft Windows 95 appearance. The file shown under the properties-shortcut window is correct, i.e. (c:\program files\cftw\cftw32.exe). 2) The attempt to restore an earlier backup (one done with 2.27 or earlier) fails with error 110. However, before when it got this error the new directory was created for the data with no contents. This time data were created and a line appeared so it would appear you could load it while in cftw, but the error window comes up reading "No valid Family tree files exist" 3) Each time it loads it says it is copying the font files, and then in the next window says it cannot, but then the program seems to run and print normally afterwards. 4) Attempt to backup on exit from the program gives the 160 error. I think I will reload 2.27!
I am now running into the error 160 when I try to exit with the automatic back up. I find that when you try to delete the old backup while cftw is up, you get an error 100. However, after exiting the program you can remove the backup, and then reload, open the file, exit again, and then it backs up normally. This error does not always occur, but so far I have not had enough instances where it is clear when it will and won't. However, I now find a more serious problem: In going through and editing out the duplicate events that appeared when I did the merge from the original datafiles which overlapped some, I found I made some errors. I want to go back to a couple of the originally unmerged backups to check some entries. I now find that there is a new error message when I try to restore one of these files: "No valid Family Tree files exist" I suspect that none of the unmerged files can be read with the 2.29 program and to read I may have to reload 2.27? Lastly, I had previously indicated that the Lund fonts were not on the Windows\fonts directory so I would reload from the Cleansweep backup from the 2.27 removal copy. Well, I must have been mistaken. Cleansweep would not restore them since it said they were already there. At this point I don't know if they were installed with the 2.29 install, or whether the first attempt to reload did this. I had my "Windows Commander" set to not see hidden files, and Fonts is a hidden directory. They are there. Even so, each time I load cftw it gives me the message: "Fonts copied to font directory, OK?" and after the OK I get the error message "The set of LUnd fonds did not install properly, etc"
