    3. I installed v2.29 on top of v2.28 and had no problems. I then checked my user-defined events. Although the setup program indicated that they had loaded they did not appear. I then ran Rebuild Key Files from the Tools Menu, which restored all of the custom events. Perhaps this will be of help to others. STEVEN J. 1. installing version 2.29 over 2.27
    2. Joseph Cain
    3. There was a recent posting suggesting that the problem I was having in the install of version 2.29 was the prior removal of the earlier version (whether by Cleansweep or the cft supplied uninstall program). To test this I already had 2.27 working again as per an earlier post except for its inability to be able to restore older zipped backup files. (These could be read with no problem when unzipped by another means to the cftw directory). I then installed 2.29 on top of 2.27 to see if there was any difference. The result was nearly the same. That is, when it first presented the icon for family tree it was unable to bring up the program, but had to look for it even though the Properties/shortcut directed it correctly to the cftw32.exe file. This was again repaired by looking for the icon, which when found solved that problem. However, on each load the screen would flash "Fonts were copies to fonts directory, press ok to continue," followed by another screen that had the caption: "LUNDS FONTS Installation warning" which read: "The set of Lunds fonts did not install properly...etc" after which the program loaded fine. I also tested whether it would reload the older databases. This time it did reload all but two. Both of the backups were flawed in that they would not unzip using Norton's unzip program. The file that would not unzip was individ.tps, whose length was 84,480 long on both. The one that cftw unzipped except for this file was written 2/22/98 during the time I was testing version 2.29. (I had not intended to replace any of the old files so this was an error in so doing). The other failure was a database that was backed up 10/5/97 with whatever version was in use at that time. In this instance the file appeared in the directory was only 768 bytes long after the cftw restore. Has anyone else had such failures of the backups to reload? I have not had problems with unzipping such files except in instances where they were written to defective floppies. These were both written to my other hard drive.

    3. I, too, think 2.29 is great. The GED export and import was of utmost importance to me since I had to give a GED file to people not using CFTW (poor people!) Nevertheless, the GED now exports and imports without turning people DEAD to/from at least 3 other genealogy programs (so I've been told). Ira: take some time off: you deserve it!! Thanks so much Karen Pastuzyn

    3. Wow!!... Ever since Ver 2.00 the Backup utility (OCX) has been the same and any ZIP file created with any version since then should be able to be read by any version since then. And these ZIP files are supposed to be compatible with WinZip and PKZIP, so you could test with those programs. From some reports from users it is acting like some backups are creating BAD ZIP files that have no data. But I think that others say that their backup works fine. I shall look at this next go around again. This cleansweep stuff doesn't sound very "clean" to me. I think it would be better to use CFT-Win uninstall or simply explorer to remove CFTwin files. CFT-Win ONLY installs files into c:\cftw and c:\cftw\sample plus the 4 fonts to c:\windows\fonts. That ought to be easy enough to clean out in explorer. It just sounds like Cleansweep is missing things in the explanation you gave. Ver 2.29 is a special case in that I added a new Menu item (Edit Menu - Fix Gender) and thus had to change the LANGUAGE.TPS file. Also there has had to be a way to update the STDEVE.TPS file for any user added events - to preserve them. Simply using your old file would have worked, though - but it would not have gotten any new fixes that I made. Normally this is not a problem with most people. Kind regards Jens, Holte, Denmark G'day All I have a female who marries three times. In the main screen I have placed the marriages in the following order: MARDUEL - 1898 (First husband FRN-000062) COTTERILL - 1921 (Second husband FRN-000257) THOMPSON - 1940 (Third husband FRN-000258) When I print an INDIVIDUAL STORY of the lady's FATHER the details under her name are in the order COTTERILL THOMPSON MARDUEL This is not alphabetical by surname, it isn't chronological (my expectation), it is not the order listed in her record and it isn't in the order of the FRN (an outside possibility)

    1. Upgrade Instructions
    2. René Hasekamp
    3. Ira and all, I still have problems with version 2.29x. After starting up version 2.29 I replaced the two files (language and Stdevents) by my old ones, in order to get my custom events back. As far as I am aware I followed the "upgrade instrutions" by Karen step by step, but when the program is starting I get the message "ERROR Language file missing. OR Second instance of program not allowed. Program should be terminated" I then have the choice to "ABORT" or "IGNORE". When I "abort" the program ends, so that doesn't help me very much. When I "ignore", however, the program starts up fuerther with my database and I can see my custom events, so it looks all right. But I dare not to chane anything, afraid as I am to corrupt my database. When I close the program and start up again I get the same screen! What can this be and how can I start working with version 2.29x at last?! It looks as if I have to go back to version 2.27x. Until then everything worked without error messages. Regards, Ren Hasekamp
