This sounds like a mixup between the disk #2 of CFT-Win16-bit and 32-bit. Make sure you download the proper pair of files. The best way is to download the SINGLE large file - then you get the whole thing right the first time. Ira ---------------------------------------------------------- Ira J. Pertaining to George's long post about NAV problems and graphic drivers etc. I can tell you that it even happens with my software. Years ago I licensed a firm to sell on disk copies of a program I called "Our Family Tree" - a very old DOS program. I dare say that it has been at least 3 years since that company has even ceased to exist - yet can you believe that I still get registration letters from people who just purchased one of these disks? I can hardly believe how long that stuff lasts. This is one reason that I really like the Internet and my Web site - I can provide FRESH software immediately to everyone. I make a change and you can get it right away. I also create CFT-Win disks as we fill orders, thus every order that leaves my office is FRESH. Ver 2.29 was placed in orders the day it was posted on my Web site. That's another reason I am not too keen on letting another company mass produce, warehouse and ship my product to retail stores. I have a comparable result. Having installed ver2.29 above ver2.27 (16bit) -WindowsNT; program file on a net drive, install from two diskettes (2disk set files) - 'help / above ...' shows still a window saying this is 2.27. Explorer shows the files cftw16.exe, american.vtd, custom.vtc, vtspeller.vtx and zipstd2x.vbx with date 10.01.98 02:00 (as in 2.27) wheras all other files have the date of 20.02.98. Same file dates when installing on hard drive (but setup program says 'setup was unable to install A.\language._ne to C:\:cftw language.new'; subsequently after having copied a language.tps file manually to C:\cftw the start window says it is ver 2.27 and next message says 'Error: language file missing.Or second instance of program not allowed..' I don't dare to install Ver2.29x (32bit) as well because I fear some of my data will get corrupted and will continue to use 2.27x version for the time being. Question: is a more reliable ver2.30 to come in the next future ? Max max.gschneidinger@zp.siemens.de > ---------- > > I just checked the "help..about" and it does say 2.28. Thank you George for your helpful comments. I too have had no problems with CFTW installation, backing up files, or Lund fonts. I have found through experience the very difficulties you described when installing any new application, and I now carry out the following every time. 1. Use ctrl + alt + del to bring up the Close program dialog box. 2. Click on every program and then "End Task" (except for Systray and Explorer). 3. Run "set up" or "install", and when completed restart your computer. I was curious about your comments on Norton AntiVirus, which I use, and would appreciate a source for further information. good eving everybody, didn t you all feel -today was a hard working day, and for relaxing I as you start my PC to do a little genealogy, going to cft-win@rootsweb and reading again, and again software problems of cleanswip, Norton etc. Then on the other genealogy channels they discuss theyr organisational problems and million people have to read it - I am sitting in old Hungary and can not understand that in the US they have not qualified PC and software dealers to help the clients. After 60 to 80 emails, I find a mail of subject. Ira gave me fun with this software and I think he has also to read it -every day. People very seriously spoken - do you really need this channel to learn about your software which has nothing to do with CFT W. Think only ten secs about this relax, drink a nice whisky or lemon juice and lets come back to the "roots" Peter Lex Joseph Cain wrote: > > > The other thing I have had bad reports about > > is using cleansweep to install programs, surely there is no need to use this > > facility to monitor the install since most programs, CFT included do have an > > uninstall feature anyway. > > After a few snags due to a CFT "feature" which has now been corrected, I > have had no problems in monitoring with Cleansweep during an install, > only the one problem in a restore where it missed an important file. > Its advantage is that unless you kept the earlier edition, it is not easy to > reinstall the uninstalled program, not possible with the imbedded > installers usually. At 11:56 PM 3/4/98 -0800, Peter Lex wrote: >good eving everybody, > >didn t you all feel -today was a hard working day, and for relaxing I as Hi CFT-WIN subscribers. Felt I had to answer Peter's reply to my previous posting. Yes, Peter, this List is for discussion of the CFT program, BUT..... Since there seems to be problems with many users' installation, I thought it prudent to offer some suggestions. I believe that any- thing that helps CFT installation is of value here on this List. Many CFT users are NOT experts, nor do they have access to sites to help them with installation. Since this is really an informal list, maintained by me for Ira, I feel that ANYTHING posted here that helps with installation of CFT, and its use, is "fair game" for discussion here. I, for one, am sick and tired of trying to install new programs and have them fail because of some idiosyncrasy of Win95. We all need help from time to time and we should all be willing to give help to others when we can. Maybe reading some of these posts is boring and only rehashes what some users already know. But remember, the majority of Win95 users do NOT know all the "ins and outs" of installation and usage. To get to some specifics, I have been asked privately by several users about Norton Anti-Virus and problems it creates for SOME users. Note that I say "SOME", not "ALL". To give an example, I recently helped a friend with an NAV problem on his computer. He bought a Toshiba LapTop and one of the first things he did was to install NAV. Then, every time he tried to install programs, the system would freeze, and upon re-booting, he was informed that several necessary .DLL files for Win95 were missing. The program he was trying to install was Microsoft Office!!!!! Now you would think that installing an MS program in Win95 would cause no problems. Anyway, we called the Technical Support number for Toshiba, explained the problem, and the first question the nice lady asked was, "Do you have NAV on your system?" She advised that NAV caused all sorts of problems with installation of ANY program in Win95 on the Toshiba system. My friend did NOT have NAV set to scan anything; in other words, it was just residing on his hard-drive. The lady said that even if it were not active, just the mere presence of some of the NAV drivers would wreck havoc with installation of many programs. We uninstalled NAV, looked through the directories and removed ANY and ALL files that even looked like they were connected to NAV. (Of course, we didn't delete them, we just moved them to floppies, in case we had removed some that were needed later.) Since that time, my friend has had absolutely no problems with installing ANY program. It appears that, even if NAV is not active, and that if the NAV directory isn't even listed in the path in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file, for some reason Win95 finds these files and loses its mind. Now, this doesn't happen for every user. Some users are able to have NAV on their system and, as long is NAV isn't active, that is, isn't configured to do anything, have no problems with installation. But, many, many users DO have problems with installation when NAV resides on their system. It has absolutely nothing to do with the program being installed, nor the installation procedure of that program. It's a mighty problem between Win95 and NAV under certain circumstances. And, as I mentioned in the original post, NAV is not the only culprit. Video drivers, sound drivers, etc., can cause serious problems with installation of other programs. I apologize for this long post, but it's going to get longer. Just bear with me. If you have problems installing ANY program, there are some things you can do to help find the problem. I recently tried to install Print Shop Gold Deluxe and it just wouldn't install. I kept getting messages that the program couldn't read from my CD-ROM drive. I called Print Shop Technical Support and here's what the TechRep had me do. I was told to right-click on an empty spot on the Desktop, then click on Properties, then on Settings. I was told to change the Color Palette from "True Color 32-bit" (16 million colors) to 256 Colors. Then, I was told to click on "Change Display Type", and then on "Show All Devices", then on "Standard Monitor Types", then on "Standard VGA 640X480", then on "OK". After this, I was instructed to re-boot my computer with those settings. I then attempted an installation of the program, and guess what? It installed perfectly. All this while I was on the phone with the TechRep. She told me that my Video Drivers for the Trident video card were causing conflict with the installation program and that I needed to down- load the latest drivers from the Trident web site. I looked through the documentation for my video card, found the URL, logged on, and lo and behold, found that there had been several up- dates to the drivers since the ones that came with the software with my video card. I downloaded the new drivers, installed them, and then attempted another installation of the same program. ABSOLUTELY NO PROBLEMS. After installation, I reversed the procedure and changed my system back to 16 million colors, SVGA 800X600, using the new Trident drivers. No problems with running the program, just in the initial installation. There is a lesson here. I don't care if you bought your computer system YESTERDAY, chances are the various drivers on the system are already outdated. Some of these systems have been sitting in warehouses for months, even a year or more. You HAVE to download the latest driver software before you get too deeply involved with installing new programs. If you don't know the URL's for the various hardware parts of your system, just go to the Microsoft web site and navigate to the page for updated drivers. Search through it and find those that apply to you and download them. This usually works, but you SHOULD try to go to the sites for your specific hardware. Look through the paper documents that came with your system. You will find the Web addresses for their sites. To get back to NAV, I'm going to tell you right now, that until Norton solves some problems, you will have problems sooner or later with installation of software, even if you don't have NAV activated and only have the files residing "dormant" on your hard-drive. I'm sorry for this, as I have used NAV ever since I got my first 8086 and used Norton Anti Virus. (That goes a long ways back and most of you don't even know what an 8086 is. Hint: it was two systems before the 286.) I have been a faithful user of NAV, always paying the necessary money to keep it updated; but, as of now, I am not using it until it is "fixed". Some other things that you might consider are duplicate drivers in various directories on your hard-drive. There are certain files that reside normally in your Windows directory or in your Windows\System directory. Some installation utilities also install these same files in the directories for the specific software. If the files in these software directories are not the same as the ones in the Windows or Windows\System directories, they can be potential problems. Get a good utility that scans your hard-drive and allows you to remove duplicate files. Make sure that you keep the most current versions of whatever duplicate drivers the utility finds, and make sure that these files end up in the Windows or Windows\System directories. Nuff for now, SgtGeorge CFT-WIN List Administrator

I have been hearing people singing the praises of Cumberland Family Tree so I decided to download the latest version and evaluate it. One of my objectives in doing my family research is to be able to produce the fanciest biggest color family tree possible. After a brief look at CFTW it appears that A4 is the biggest I can print a family tree. Is this the case or have I just been too hasty in my evaluation of the product? If CFTW does in fact only produce A4 products does anyone in the group know if the ability to produce larger charts is on the development path for this product? -- Wayne Thurley Computer Facilities Planning Manager Bureau of Meteorology Box 1289K, Melbourne, Victoria, AUSTRALIA, 3001 Phone: 61 03 96694674 Fax: 61 03 96694088 Return Email: W.Thurley@bom.gov.au

Ira and All I think it is worth pointing out that I have had this advice before that if you use Norton anti virus it can create many problems when installing programs. I always disabled NAV before installing, although I have got rid of this now in favour of FPROT. The other thing I have had bad reports about is using cleansweep to install programs, surely there is no need to use this facility to monitor the install since most programs, CFT included do have an uninstall feature anyway. I have Norton Utilities, but not Norton anti-virus, which I also dispensed with some time ago. However, the Utilities do a check for viruses, but no fixes. I also have on Norton Navigator. Could you be more explicit abouit what files are a problem? I do not have on my syatem any files with .NAV suffixes, but do have: NAVEX.xxx (xxx is several) and NAVEX32.dll and NAVOEM.VXD Are any of these a problem? As a footnote to my last problem with the page fault when running 2.29. I ran Norton Windows fixit program and the page fault disappeared on further use. However, the two font messages still appear on each use. Otherwise 2.29 seems to work ok now.

As Administrator for this CFT-WIN mailing list, I see every message that comes through to the List. I have some observations that I would like to post, especially for Ira. First of all, I have NEVER had any problems with fonts for CFT either in the old Windows 3.1 version or the latest Win95 version. Second, I have NEVER had any problems with backing up the files when I exit CFT. Now for my observation: Ira has hinted at the fact that part of the problem MAY be due to the various configurations of users' systems. He has, as always, been gentlemanly about it, and not blamed users' problems on their system configuration. I firmly believe that if one has his/her system configured properly, has all associations set properly, and has taken the time to go online on the Web to find out how to "tweak" and configure Win95, there will be no problem with installation and usage of CFT. Now, don't get me wrong, I'm not blaming anyone -- I just believe that there are many users out there, who, even having used computers for years, have no clue about Win95. Win95, while purporting to be the "answer to all previous problems with Windows", still has many, many bugs, glitches, and problems. One of the MAJOR problems with installing new or updated programs is that there is a conflict with Win95 drivers. I KNOW, since I have had to find and download new drivers for all my hardware since first installing Win95. The first thing any of you should do is go to the Web site for your hardware, e.g., Video Cards, Sound Cards, Hard Drives, etc., and download the latest versions of drivers for ALL your hardware. This is something that Microsoft does NOT tell you, but is critical in having a trouble-free operating environment. Having problems with brand new hardware, with its accompanying software, should never happen, but it does. I recently bought a new monitor and received a CD-ROM disk with it to install the new drivers. Guess what? Half of the time Win95 crashed! Installation of new software programs was impossible. I finally went to the Web site for the product, downloaded the new drivers, and solved 99% of my problems. Another BIG problem with installation of software is that the Norton Anti-Virus (NAV) files conflict horribly with many, many software installation programs. If you are using/running NAV, you just might as well uninstall it and get rid of all its drivers and .DLL files in your Win95 directories. Norton is working on "fixes", but it is doubtful that all the problems will be solved until they do a complete re-write of the program. Even if your NAV is not active, the mere presence of its files on your hard- drive can wreak havoc with installation programs. Anyway, just a few thoughts about some of the problems some of you have been having. Don't blame the installation program of CFT -- no program, no matter how perfect, can overcome all the problems caused by mis-configured Win95 or by conflicting drivers from other programs. SgtGeorge
I have recently applied the 2.29 upgrade. I have been using CFTW since around version 2.21 and applying the upgrades as they come out. I have not done any work on my database for a version or two and have just noticed that when I look at individuals, their living flag is not checked - they don't show as dead either! I have tried the rebuild with the set older that say 100 as dead, but the flag check box in all the individuals I checked does not change. I can check it, close the dialogue and then re-enter it to find the box unchecked. I even recovered my database backup file from 2.28 usage and it does the same. I however have not kept the older versions of CFTW. Has anyone else come across this or is this isolated?? Regards David Hartley

Ira and All, Ver 2.29 provided a fix for surnames with two or more words being carried through fully when adding a child. This works well now for an addition of a child or parent. However, if instead of Adding the child, it is Inserted, the surname loses its / / markers while retaining the two or more words.
