    3. To Ira and all, I'm using photos in about one inch high. At 200 DPI, files are about 30K. Printing with a laser postcript at 600 DPI, result is great but at screen, images are resized with big pixels. Can you add a program option in ver 3 "Not resized images at photo window" ? 3. In reference to my previous post on the ProGentitor program, I feel I must forward this post from Florence Moore, concerning a program that will read the databases on the web and convert them to GEDCOM. I considered this to be a minor issue, and have not done a bug report. Ira Believe I found the reason, the cause was embedded pictures some which were jpg files with rather heavy volume. You should make an recommendation as to what max size to use. So despite me having 32mb ram and plenty of free space, this caused the program to generate very slowly and skip generating the first page, when I removed that particular picture, it generated ok, so now I take alook into picture size in general to reduce size. 3. Ira and all, I have not been able to follow the list very well during the past few weeks due to sad circumstances. Now I want to report a few things that may have been reported before. Sorry if so. 1) I never had any problems with the automatic backup on closing down with any previous version of CFT-Win, but since version 2.29x I can make a backup if I don't have one already, overwrite it once, but after that I get error 160. Is there any cure for this? At the moment I delete my backup before making a new one. It works, but is not very handy. 2) Is there a way to change the order of the "documents"? At the moment I see no way to do this, which means that the "document" entered first will be document #1, the second one will be document #2 and so on. But this is not always the most logical order. Can I change the order in any way? 3) Some time ago I reported some printing problems. Now I have found the cause and the cure: I have installed CFT-Win on a Zip disc (I will install the next version on my HD). My ZIP drive is a Parallel Port Drive, which means the printer is "behind" it via the through connector. Now, it appears that certain printers (e.g. CANON BJ) cannot print files from a ZIP disc as long as there are any files open on the ZIP disc. Those printers (like CANON BJ) need to communicate with the Parallel Port in two directions, which gives conflicts with the ZIP drive, as long as that drive needs to communicate too (that is as long as there are any files opened on the ZIP disc). SOLUTION: Change the settings of your printer to "Print to FILE". A *.prn file will be written then (don't write that one on the ZIP disc either!). After you have closed down all files on your ZIP, open a DOS session, go to the folder where you saved your *.prn file and print it through a "COPY *.PRN LPT1" command. It looks complicated, but it isn't. Hope this can help any other subscribers to the list. 4) I have stored my photo's in a sub-directory WITHIN my database directory. That sub-directory is not being back-up in a back-up operation (although ALL files in the database directory are being backed up, whatever their name. I have for instance some text files there and they are being backed up every time). It would be handy if that sub-directory were backed up too. Those users who don't want their photo's being backed up every time could place them in a directory OUTSIDE their database directory. What do other users think about this? Regards, Ren Hasekamp

    1. Demonstration of ProGen Program (GEDCOM to HTML) for Web Pages
    2. George W. Durman
    3. To start off, I must apologize for burdening some of you with what will be seen as superfluous trivia; however, in this day and age of posting genealogy data to web sites, I feel that it is important for you to know just what is available in the way of converting GEDCOM files to HTML and placing on Web Sites. I have just Registered, Downloaded, and Installed a program called "ProGenitor2". It takes GEDCOM files, converts them to HTML for uploading to a Web Site, and then makes those files available for users to view, search, copy, download, etc. I have been involved in doing this "genealogy thing" for over 12 years, starting back when the "Net" and "Web" weren't even figments of any- ones imagination. I've had my own web site for almost 2 years now. I have, over the past 2 years, used several programs to convert GEDCOM files to HTML, to upload to the site and allow users to easily find data on specific surnames/families. ProGenitor is absolutely the best one I have found. This email is not meant to be a "plug" for this program, it is meant to show you users what can be done with your own GEDCOM file, created from your computer genealogy program. On my web page, BROYLES/BRILES Family History, I already had several databases available, using a program called GED2HTML. It is a very nice program, but once you see what ProGenitor can do, I believe you will like it better. To test this new program, I chose a relatively small GEDCOM file that a correspondent had sent me. It contains only 945 names, and thus was one that would take up relatively little space on my ISP. The surname that is involved is FILLERS, and it is connected to the BROYLES surname. In Greene and Washington Counties in Tennessee, the name FILLERS/ FELLERS/G'FELLERS is one that is interwoven throughout Tennessee's history with the BROYLES/BRILES and WILHOIT/WILHITE families. Thus, I thought it a good one to experiment with. (I must warn you that there is one problem with this particular GEDCOM -- the BROYLES ancestors are not linked back to the immigrant Johannes BREYHEL (John BROYLES). It is a FILLERS history and the researcher didn't follow through with the BROYLES history.) I would like for any of you to visit this site: http://www.concentric.net/~sgtgeorg/fillers1/index.html Please navigate around and see how you like this format for putting databases on the web. When the home page pops up, I would sug- gest that you click on "Help" to see what you can do. Once you have read the help file, go back and click on "Search". You will get a page where every Surname in the database is listed. You can either scroll down the list until you find a Surname that you would like to investigate, or simply type in the surname in the avail- able search box and click "Search". Let's say you want to look for the BROYLES surname. Scroll down the page to BROYLES, click on the BROYLES name, go to the button bar at the top, Click on "Views", then "Display Records". This will give you a list of EVERY BROYLES name in the database. To give you a demonstration, after the "Display Records" screen has loaded, under "BROYLES, Addie", you will see "BROYLES, Lewis Melvin". Click on his name and you will get a complete family history for him and his wife. If you want ancestral charts or descendant charts, instead of clicking on "Display Records", click on "Ancestor" or "Descendants". To print out an ancestral chart or descendant chart, click on "Print" and FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS !!!!! It may seem complicated at first, but I assure you that you will be surprised and delighted at the results. Now that I have led you through this morass, let me get to the REAL intent of this email. "IF" you have a database of a "Germanna" family, and IF you would like to have your database on the "Web", you can send me a GEDCOM of your database and I will use ProGenitor to convert it to HTML and post it to my web site. There is no charge and I'm making this offer in order to get as much data as possible of the Germanna families on the Web. Just remember, for every 200 names in your database, it costs me about 500 Kb (.5 Mb) of server space. So, if your database contains 2000 names, it will take 5 Mb of space. I would appreciate it if you would use the capabilities of your genealogy database program and make a GEDCOM of ONLY those names, trees, branches, lines, etc., that pertain to actual Germanna descendants. That is, don't include ances- tors of spouses if they are not Germanna descendants. When you send the GEDCOM, give me your name, email address, and (if you have one) the URL for your Web Site. I will not disseminate the data in the GEDCOM files to anyone else. They will reside on my server, only for the use of Germanna researchers, and may not be copied, compiled, nor re-trans- mitted for use by profit-making enterprises. I will copywrite the pages so that anyone wishing to use the data is warned "upfront" that it is not "public domain" material. Sorry for this overly-long email, but I just couldn't make it any smaller. For those of you who have sent me GEDCOM files in the past, I am now ready to convert them into HTML and post to the web site. Sorry it has taken so long. (Some GEDCOM files that I have received were not exported in the proper format and I can't use them. Also, some files were included as text in the body of the emails you used to send them -- these files will have to be re-submitted if I am going to be able to convert them and upload to the server.) Just remember, if you send me a GEDCOM file, DO NOT send it as part of the text body of an email. You MUST send it as a separate attachment!!!!! And, it must be exported from your genealogy program as a GEDCOM file, not as some other aberration of a file such as FTM produces. Oh, one thing I forgot to say was that one of the reasons I am so excited over this program is that I produces files that take up much, much less space on the server that do the other programs I have used. I have now learned that I have a lot of relatives abroad Denmark and whey are interessted in my notes and possibility to get a gedcom file from me - but they don't read danish. I am looking for a way to edit the "note-database" - directly - is that possible? You see I got 6.000 events and I have used notes quite a lot of times (the statistik says 297 with notes/ and 650 general notes) - and beeing a little lazy I wish to avoid entering each individual (I've got 2.100) checking for notes. regards Rolf

May I suggest you also put the CODE-name behind - ie BAPTISM (BAPM) just the way you do in REPORTS/OTHER LISTS/EVENT LIST. I usually uses the Danish menu/report options and have sometime doubts whether I'm using the right event for the specific purpose. best regards from a fan of this program Rolf

    1. Unmarried Situation
    2. Ira J. Lund
    3. I am sending this message to the List in case others have a similar situation. John, I have looked at your case and know why it behaves the way it does. Here is the situation. Michael is engaged to Julie and they have one child. They never marry and later Michael marries Michelle and they have 3 children. Michael shows 3 events: 1. Birth 2. Engagement to Julie 3. Marriage to Michelle. When the story report prints, it prints the birth event with note, then prints the engagement event with note (but does not show the child), then in prints the marriage event and lists children with Michelle. At the end, the story does a double check and says - "Oh yes, the children of Michael and Julie haven't been printed yet" so it prints that child - but fails to say whose child it is - although it is preceded with "They had the following children:" Here is what happened: The printing of children is triggered by only three events: "Marriage", "Not Married" and "Lived Together". It never gets triggered by an "Engagement". If it did then children would often get printed after the engagement and before the marriage. The solution: Whenever there are children to be listed always add one of the three trigger events. In this case I can add a "Not Married" (to Julie) event between the Engagement and Marriage to Michelle. (But I must add a date, place or short note for it to get printed). Now the story will work properly. It will show Michael's birth, engagement to Julie, "Michael was not married to Julie" then list that one child. Then it will show the marriage to Michelle followed by their three children. [Another solution is to simply replace the Engagement to Julie with a Not Married to Julie Event.] Hope this helps clarify. Ira ---------------------------------------------------------- Ira J.
