Sources in 2 levels are now introduced and that is an improvement. But will we be able to convert the one level sources in cftw2 to two level sources in cftw3 after an import of a cftw2 database? As far as I can see, there is no way in cftw3beta1 to convert the sources in the source editor. We have to do it for every event for every person - and that is an almost impossible task for big databases. Will there be a solution to this? Regards Sigurd Eliassen Norway
Ira, I agree so much with Yair Sachs and others so I would tend to say: reinstating those keys is a must, but will just politely say: please do it! I hate to use the mouse, and use it as little as at all possible. Hello Ira, Similar problems as Steven with registering >Following your directions, I then Register the two OCX's: > >1. I do not get what´s distribution criteria the between between address and place editor. I use exact addreses in birth, residence etc. events. When importing to CFT-Win3, no place information appeared - not in individual editor nor in story. Here I have the same experience as Patric with a difference - both address editor and place editor lists are uncomplete (comparing with Place Name editor in ver.2). I miss the tree and bookmarks icons a bit... I like very much UCC. I am looking to to improvements - ver. seems really exiting! Petr
I also would like to see the buttons for changing key individual in future v3.x versions. There have been several times in v2 when I press the "F" several times to "quickly" go up five generations. In CFT v3 beta program, it would take much more effort to double-click the mouse to change the key individual. The shortcuts that were in version 2 give CFT a unique user interface that most other programs do not use. Why change a good thing if you don't have to? These little shortcuts are "very" valuable when working with/entering a database with 7000+ individuals. Jeff At 12:43 PM 6/1/98 -0500, you wrote: >>3. Hi thanks to all of you for your ideas and comments. It's really nice to be part of this list. Now I'm looking forward to ver. 3 which I haven't tried yet. Suggest including an option for importing User Dictionary and Standard >Events from v.2. instead of having to do it mechanically. Yes. Will do this also for events. User Dictionary is CUSTOM.VTC. You can copy the one from your ver 2. But you do bring up a point about the upgrade process. It likely would get overwritten if we allowed Ver 3 to be installed over Ver 2. >I'm testing Cftw3 since one day (after installing ocx, editor works fine) : Okay, this explains earlier problem. >- In ver 2 import, if a place name is in use as place name and as address, place name is lost in events (my previous mail). Yes, I see what the problem here may be. You have used a place name in an Address Event as well as other events. Not sure how I am going to solve that one. Typically I expected a person to enter a valid address as an Address event that would not be used in any other type of events which typically only show city, county, state/country. >- in story window only the first marriage is displayed. Maybe because there is no Marriage event for other marriages? >'Witness' with individual record's link is a great improvment but : >- for baptism, could you add GODFATHER and GODMOTHER ? >- could you add a miscellanous data to indicate : guardian, priest, mayor... >- the easier way for entering witness is a new window (like Note or Source) in Event Editor. How about helping me understand this better. Could you give me a sentence construction of what you are thinking of here. I do not really want to complicate things much more so my current feeling is that if a Godfather WITNESSED an event then the witness event is "generic" in the sense that it says the person "witnessed" the event and then more specifics are in the notes - saying for example that this person was the Godfather. Otherwise this may get rather complicated. Will have to do some more thinking here. Ira ---------------------------------------------------------- Ira J. To Ira and all, 'French republicain' calendar used by Cft-Win 3 is 'French Republicain (modified)' for UCC. The used calendar in originals records is 'French Republican (original)'. In Family Group window, age is false if a no-gregorian calendar is used for birth or death event. Best regards, Patrick TEXIER Home Page : http://perso.wanadoo.fr/p.texier/
To Ira and all, I'm testing Cftw3 since one day (after installing ocx, editor works fine) : - In ver 2 import, if a place name is in use as place name and as address, place name is lost in events (my previous mail). - Escape key doesn't close many windows. I think that this key is usefull (faster than alt-c). - No keys are avaiblable for selecting place names or miscellanous data by list (alt-p, alt-m in ver 2). - in story window only the first marriage is displayed. 'Witness' with individual record's link is a great improvment but : - for baptism, could you add GODFATHER and GODMOTHER ? - could you add a miscellanous data to indicate : guardian, priest, mayor... - the easier way for entering witness is a new window (like Note or Source) in Event Editor. Ira: I'm having problems installing v3 Beta. The download and unzipping is find. The files have been placed in a directory called: CFTW3. The files for v2.29 I keep in a directory called: FAMTREE. Following your directions, I then Register the two OCX's: 1. Press Start, Run and enter: c:\cftw3\regsvr32 c:\cftw\vspell32.ocx, which returns the following Error Message: LoadLibrary ("c:\cftw\vspell32.ocx") failed. GetLastError returns 0x00000485. Changing the command to: c:\cftw3\regsvr32 c:\FAMTREE\vspell32.ocx returns the same result. Changing the command to: c:\cftw3\regsvr32 c:\CFTW3\vspell32.ocx returns the same result. 2. Press Start, Run and enter: c:\cftw3\regsvr32 c:\cftw\tx4ole.ocx returns the same result. Changing the command to: c:\cftw3\regsvr32 c:\cftw3\tx4ole.ocx returns a SUCCESSFUL install. I need your help and help from the LIST to resolve this problem. I am most anxious to see this new/improved product and to assist in its development. As always, Thanks! STEVEN J. Further comments: 1. I solved the Father/Mother/Child problem, thanks. 2. There should be an option for auto open of a chosen database, as in v.2. 3. The Arial font in General and Event Notes gives very uneven spacing, so the text looks strange, some spaces too narrow, some too wide. 4. Nice to see a Find & Replace in the notes, but will there not be a Global Search & Replace to develop further the Global Search in v.2? 5. The Free Format in events is an interesting addition, but I would love to see the Free Format text placed just BEFORE the date(s) rather than just AFTER, and I would prefer the text NOT have parentheses surrounding it. In that way, I could get "John DOE lived at least from 1900 to 1905 at... ", which looks better than "John DOE lived from 1900 to 1905 (at least) at... ", which is misleading. 6. Suggest including an option for importing User Dictionary and Standard Events from v.2. instead of having to do it mechanically. G'day Ira, Beta 3 looks great and seems to work respectably well. I like the method of presentation of the "workplace". I am working my way through a few "tests" and am fully appreciative that any "glitches" that I report may well be the result of a "work in progress" however FWIW here they are as I come across them:- 1. Item 3.2 on the web site instructions says:- "Press Start, Run and enter: c:\cftw3\regsvr32 c:\cftw\tx4ole.ocx" As the ONLY copy of "tx4ole.ocx" that I could find was in the c:\cftw3 directory (or its equivalent in my installation), I assume that the last part of the statement should read "c:\cftw***3***\tx4ole.ocx" 2. I imported one of my "spare" "trial" DBs (422 IRNs) from CFTW2.90 into Beta3 without problems except that my STANDARD EVENTS reverted to the CFT basic list. e.g - I have a "User added" event - PROM (Military Promotion). I found that all my promotions became "Marriage" (at least to the same wife :-)) with no dates. I assume this is caused because I did not install over the old version of CFTW. I found that by adding a new event "PROM" to Beta3 that all the old promotions appeared with the correct dates. (as I expected would happen.) 3. I think the idea of being able to construct the "story line" using the new format ["%N started a business %D p{at} %P m{called} %M"] is EXCELLENT. Have not done a test yet but assume that "p{at}" means use the "at" only if there is a PLACE entered. Just tested - assumption correct - It works- a GREAT advance! 4. Tried adding a *.wav file to my Media (Photo) Folder but could not get it to play although I can add photos to individuals and preview them. (Didn't really expect sound to work) 5. Story Options work well (Leurve the colours ;-)) and story presents well. 6. Having the ages of my living relatives and children makes birthday greetings easy! 7. Not sure why the columns for Marriages and Sex cannot be modified. 8. Ira said:- No asterisks for photos and notes BUT there should appear some little icons: a small camera and a sheet of paper. If not make sure you really have notes and photos attached for that person. I now note that there are no headings "Adp N P" between Marriages and Sex on my "Family Group" pages so no "asterisks" OR ICONS. 9. Database closed perfectly. and reopened again. 10. Even though I have no dates against Death and Burial in my Individual dialog and I am ticked as living they appear as statements in my Story. That will do for tonight - THANKS for another projected GREAT improvement. HURU Mike
