One small bug. In ver2 the standard event for description had the code DSCR and in ver3 it is DESC. Result: the event was not imported correctly. The event list for the individual in question shows an event with no data and the story is corrupt. Clicking on the event opened a window where it says he is dead and in the story it says he was christened by curly hair!! The truth is that he had cury hair. Have a nice day! Hi Ira and all! Great job You have done Ira! I will not list all my wishes and bugs I found since I think all the other guys on the net have found the same as I have. One thing though. Since I am Swedish I am concerned about the Swedish part of the program. I understand though why the multilingual part isn't there yet. But will You be able to convert the old language files or do You need help from us foreign translators? I found the new system very good since the old one had its disadvantages because the languages differ in syntax. So now I am looking forward to the next beta. Btw I tried to translate a few things but when I closed the windows I got an ERROR.: 'Language file missing OR second instance of program not allowed.' Then the program aborted. I did and did not open the standard events at the same time but got the same result. Yours Ulf Göransson Flyinge ulf.goransson@mbox300.swipnet.se

Not only confusing. The program either is calculating actually for hours or it stalls completely on the ancestors and decendants tab if there are too many generations to search (haven't found out yet where the generation limit is) . Backing Ian Fettes May 30 message: >In large databases, the Ancestor and Descendant tabs enter a protracted calculation phase. Perhaps a preset generation limit would make them more flexible in use. Edit Event. > The Misc.Data does'nt show up in the story. Some of the story sentences in the Standard Event window have to be rewritten. Example BURI: %N was buried %D p{at} %P. - (no %M shown) whereas RELI: %N was a member of %M p{at} %P m{(%D)}. Am I right that the different language versions are not yet included ? When switching to 'German' the menu and the story are still in English. I would offer to rewrite the German version as soon as I understand the underlying syntax (e.g. had some problems with the 'p(at)' command) > 7. Name Search. > I have many persons with the same name. Can't see the point here . There is an additional window popping up showing events, dates and data. > The namedisplay does not always start with the Key person. Yes, I also would like to have that option back. The Given Name search doesn't show the name in the 'commonly used given name-field' but the first name in the full name-field (e.g. my full name is Helmut Max Gschneidinger, commonly used given name Max, given name search lists me under Helmut). Do I understand anything wrong here ? Max
I have looked at CFTW3 Beta1 with interest. There are many new and good ideas in the program, maybe a hundred. I have found some ten details, where I think that I can propose some improvements. 0. Opening Screen I propose the field OPEN to be renamed to f.inst. BROWSE, this may help against misunderstandings about its use. 1. Navigation The new version depends too much on the mouse, - I hate mices. A mouse may be useful for some editing, reordering or drag and drop functions. All normal selections should be possible by means of simple keystrokes. Use single keys whenever possible, f.inst. ESC instead of ALT-C. INSERT instead of ALT-I, PageUp/Arrow UP instead of ALT up etc. The keys should be consistent throughout the various screens. 2. Family group. I do not see any information in the blank area between Marr and SEX. I like to have information about adoptions or relation parents/children directly on the family screen. The pop up screen Parents shows all the parents, but I would like to be able to see the relation to the child. 3. Ancestors tab This screen is overwhelming and confusing in case of large databases. It shows a mix of natural and adopted parents, but not who is who. I very much prefer the traditional Pedigree Tree. But why can we not have both? 4. Story tab. I do not quite see the use of this, apart from being a debugging tool. What is the intention? Is it a preview of a printout? The Misc.Data are often not shown. 5. Edit Individual. The switching to the Edit screen flashes. I again see a blank area between Event and Sur without any information. A lot of my Placenames has disappeared, they are erroneously converted to Adresses in the conversion from vers.2, - please do not do that. I would like the screen to show if an Event is marked Sensitive. 6. Edit Event. The Misc.Data does'nt show up in the story. I expected that the purpose of the Free Format was to provide a modification of the standard format for this specific event. The actual function is not much different from what the Misc.Data does, so is it really needed? 7. Name Search. I have many persons with the same name. The new display makes it too difficult to find the right one, - vers.2 was much easier to use. The screen should show at least birth/chr. and placename, possibly also death/buri. The IRN is of secondary importance and could very well be moved to the new information field. The namedisplay does not always start with the Key person. 8. Wittness Event. This is a most interesting new facility, but... I am offered to register that person A witnessed an event at person B, but that is really NOT what I need to do. I want to register who witnessed the event of person B and that is not quite the same. A typical case is Witnesses to a Baptism and there may be as many as 5-7 Witnesses. These people are furthermore often known by name only and it is not always easy at the first moment to identify them precisely. 9. Adress. The Address construction is a dangerous thing. Genealogy programs handles ADDR in different ways, often in a wrong way. The Gedcom standard does NOT have any Event called ADDR. Address is according to Gedcom an Event Detail describing an Event, and it will therefore occur on level 2, not on level 1 in a Gedcom file. ADDR is in Gedcom at equal level with PLACE and they are both used in exactly the same way. This means that the correct way to place the Address information in CFT is in the Edit Event window in parallell to PLACE (there is in fact space for it!) 10. Sources. I am glad to be able to register more than one source. But I am confused about the new Source details. What I would like to see is a Source information which in accordance with Gedcom is divided into two parts: - The Source Record itself with a Source Descriptive Text - Details about the Source as related to the specific Event. The Event will have a pointer to a Source Record placed in a Source List. Following this pointer is a Note field with details related to both the Source Record and its specific use for this Event. This Source Note will give supplementing information about the Source, but it belongs to the Event, not to the Source. Example: The Birth points to the Source Record "Personal Records" The Source Note field contains "Birth Certificate" and it tells how the Source Record relates to this specific Event. Erik

To My Fellow CFT WINners: after about 12 download attempts, I was finally able to load the new BETA and like all of you, like what I see. Some suggestions for Ira: 1. It would be nice to MAXIMIZE or otherwise resize all the windows, particularly the "Edit Individual" window. For some of us, it just makes viewing the information a whole lot easier. 2. Bring back the "buttons". 3. The use of Selections Lists is a nice change, however, more "individual" information is needed, like IRN or DOB/DOD so that individuals with the same name can be diffentiated. I also liked the ability in v2 to have the program automatically generate the ancestors/descendants of a selected individual. 4. Some time ago I suggested that a decendant tree chart (with lines, no boxes) similar to BK5 appear in the next version. I hope you have plans to do so. STEVEN J. I am currently using version 2.30 and after merging a small database with my large one I find that when I do a database verification I always end up with a lot of names where the events are supposedly out of sequence. I checked them and they are all in proper order. Even rebuilding the key files doesnt correct this. Can anyone tell me why this is happening and how to correct it? I did install the program into a different file and tried it there and got the same response. But no change in the event list. Experimenting with other languages already in the program, there are no changes in the event list with exception of someone that changes the first 3 or 4 letters on top of the list. Ira, I have had a quick look at Beta 1 and like what I see. I was pleased to see that you are re-instating the short cut keys S M & F. I also noted the following bugs which I dont think anyone else has reported yet. EDIT SOURCE - The pop up hints for Add, Edit, & Delete refer to place not source. ADD/EDIT EVENT - Select Place, Select Misc Data & Select Address. When these windows open the tool bar flashes briefly then goes blank. If the cursor is placed over them the OK and CANCEL buttons become part visible and active. Keep up the good work. I look forward to seeing the rest. Ira - after receiving the message below, I decided not to uninstall the program and now I can create the error everytime. Open the program, select database, put in password, double click on the key individual. You get an error code: Word code not in file 1-3959. Click OK. You get: ERROR! Language file is missing OR Second instance of program not allowed. Program should be terminated. If you click Abort, program locks up. If you click Ignore, you can go ahead. If you change the key individual before you to try to edit the key individual, it doesn't happen. If you try to edit any other individual on the first screen it doesn't happen. It only seems to happen when you try to edit the key individual on the first screen. In fact, now that I have played some more, it only happens when I try to edit the key individual on the first screen who is IRN 00001. It only happens when I try to edit that particular individual no matter where he is on the screen. If I choose Ignore, I can go ahead and work. Hope this helps. Since others have not complained about this and it does not appear on my computers I do wonder if it is related to monitor resolution? For example, I cut and paste this entire message and placed it in a note and it looks just the same as it does in Eudora. Afraid if there is a problem for you I will be unable to fix it - it is a third party control. >BTW there is no SELECT ALL. I hope there will be. If only this was a perfect world look at all the fun we would not have!
Ira, I was in Database Configuration, Other page, and had opened Auto Family Group, with the Auto Open Name Search window active (Normal Surnames selected) where I saw the file indicator at 'bottom of file' position. After dragging the indicator to see if it was in fact "stuck" I scrolled down the list using the down arrow, and was holding and clicking the mouse button when the first lock up occured. I could not invoke the task scheduler so had to hardware reset. The error read "Word Code not in File: 1-3849" The windows error read "Language file missing OR second instance of program not allowed" I had the feeling switch bounce in the mouse may have occured. Several attempts to repeat the error appeared unsuccessful, but later efforts have managed to repeat the error, although the system responded OK to the normal windows error recovery. The subsequent windows error report varied from the "Language file missing....etc" to an "Illegal Operation - invalid page fault" - the program error, however, always the same. The trigger appears to be intermittent/rapid mouse clicking in the vicinity of the file indicator and the down arrow junction area. (could it be due to the inactive indicator) Re. comments on loss of shortcut keys, F, M, C, etc. I noticed immediately the loss of these keys (although the F key is still partially active), but having played with the 'new' system as a new system, ignoring past habits (you have to make the effort) I find it to be OK. It is a new method. The increase in speed of the program is impressive, noticeable in sorting/presentation and the reduction of keystrokes. "Import ASCII text" to clipboard - paste to an individual's note, then click undo (simulating an incorrect placement) results in an illegal operation error. (invalid page fault in TX32.DLL) The only other observation I have at this early stage, is after having imported a ver. 2 database, go to 'Story Option' and select 'Indent. paragraph'. The resulting story with indented paragraph can "lose" some words; the word wrap does not appear to take care of the line shift overflow. The imported Notes text does not appear to be affected, only the story text generated by the program from events. I have not explored all commands in detail as yet. A good result so far. Brian
As I recall, things get fouled up if instead of clicking on Select, you click on Open instead. This is assuming that the DB is already installed. Prior to installation, things got *really* fouled up by pressing the wrong keys (among these) but I don't recall the offending sequence(s). In any case, make sure that immediately after you add a new language that you highlight that language, check "include events" and press the EDIT button. You do not have to change any of the words in the list shown but this EDIT make certain that a list of words are generated for the new language. I shall likely have to look at this area.
