    3. Ira The point I was trying to make was that the merge document function within CFT document editor did not work. The docs being merged were all in my CFT data base and were listed by document editor. Jerry > > >In previous versions I have had to split my docs because they were so > >large. Up to 30 pages. I can't figure out why they would not appear on the screen. The icons get compiled right into the program itself and look just fine on my computer. >4. Story tab. >I was not aware of the facility for jumping directly to the story for >another person. This makes it a bit more attractive. The hyperlink jumps are part of the TX OCX and the one thing I don't like about it is the little up-arrow when you go over a persons name. I would like to change it to a hand like on the Web but I have no control over that. >6. Edit Event >I propose to indicate clearly that FreeFormat means in fact FreeFormatDate. Maybe so, but I thought the BOX labeled DATE which boxes in all the date information indicated that. It supposedly starts with whoever was at the top of the NameSearch the last time it was used. But I think I should provide a few options for this that the user can set: * Always start at top * Start with last NameSearch person * Start with Key Individual And yes, maybe I can add some date info to the side as suggested (per Ver 2). >10. I see your points here and I've got to think about this. There are reasons why I did it the way I did. Since I have allowed a Detail to be used more than once, it follows that you do not want to have a detail note field as part of the event itself, otherwise it would not be usable by other events. Secondly, entering details on the event window will end up complicating that window and making it just as complicated as the Source window which has two lists (Ref and Detail). I will do some more thinking here, but my preliminary re-assement now is that I am not sure how to make this any less confusing. The data structure is simply more complicated than Ver 2 notes and as such there is going to be more confusion about how to easily implement it. Any further suggestions or even screen layout ideas are welcome. Ira ---------------------------------------------------------- Ira J. In Ver 3 beta the notes size should basically be unlimited. You should be able to paste a large amount of pages into a note field. Not sure how you did your "merge". 2. Erik Helmer Nielsen
    3. I see that I have to explain some of the points I mentioned in my E-mail of 14.50 08-06-98 +0200 in more detail. I refer to the points in above mentioned mail. 1. Navigation I do not want to kill all mices. I just want a good keyboard alternative. 2. Family group. I do NOT see any Icons at all on my screen. I have checked that the person has Note and Source. He also has adopted Parents. 3. Ancestors tab. Maybe the screen could be simplified to start with say 4-5 generations and then allow for a gradual extension to more. But I still like the old Pedigree Tree !, can't we get that too? 4. Story tab. I was not aware of the facility for jumping directly to the story for another person. This makes it a bit more attractive. 5. Edit Individual. Again I see no Icons at all on my screen. 6. Edit Event I propose to indicate clearly that FreeFormat means in fact FreeFormatDate. 7. Name Search. The new NameSearch is inconvenient to me. It takes a much longer time to go through 20 people step by step to find the right one than it takes to look at their main data directly. It is OK for me to keep the detailed information as a supplement. The namedisplay should always start with the Key person and preferably with the very person, not just the same name. Now it only starts with a person being selected by NameSearch. If you select a person in any other way it will start with some random person. 8. Wittness Event. I see the problems in reversing this facility, but I must be honest to say that this feature will be difficult for me to use in the way it is implemented to day. 10. Sources. I am glad that the SourceDetail is intended to work in the way I would like. My confusion was due to the imperfect way in which the selection of SourceRef and SourceDetail is made in Beta1. I hope that this will be improved and clarified. I find that it is an unneccessary complication to put the SourceDetail in a separate list. I would rather be able to enter the SourceDetail as a Note directly at the place where it belongs, that is in the Edit Event window. I would then first select the SourceRef from a list and then optionally enter some SourceDetail information as free text, maybe in a pop up window. The window showing the SourceRef List could with great advantage be made larger when the SourceDetail List is left out. Erik

    3. Hai All, My name is Rob Hubert from the Netherlands, I'm a LDS member and I have translated the Dutch language file for CFTW. I use the program sends 1997 and I'm glad to have it. Just knowing that Ira is working on a new program with also a possibility to make an output to HTML and RTF. I have just a question. I was a PAF user and have made my notes into PAF with the ! before each TAG. The PAF file has 14097 RINs and 5097 MRINs. By using CFT I start with a new file so my question to you is how can I change the NOTES from PAF to the regular GEDCOM TAG for use in CFT without changing the complete GEDCOM file by hand. If anyone has suggestions please let me now. Best Wishes Rob Hubert The Netherlands http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/Rob_Hubert

    3. Hi Ira: In previous versions I have had to split my docs because they were so large. Up to 30 pages. In the beta version when I tried to merge them into one it failed to do so. The secondary file was deleted. It was not till I reviewed the primary doc that I found that the merge had not taken place. I tried this four times with the same results. Jerry

I seldom use key strokes because you have to remember too many of them for different applications. Ed Blakeley PS I do use Cntrl C, Cntrl X and Cntrl V a lot in editing.

The difference between "Free Format Date" and "Misc Data". Both are lesser used fields. The intention of the Free Format date is to enter a date that may not fit the standard - such as "Christmas 1997" or some old Latin Holy Day names that you might find in medieval Europe. Also usefully for entering "time" of event. The Misc Data varies depending on the event. For many religious events it is meant to include the name of the person who performed the rite. Thus they both get used differently in a story sentence and both are needed. >7. Name Search. >I have many persons with the same name.
