Hi All, I can confirm that I also experienced a similar problem about a month ago. At first I thought it was a quirk of my data, until I discovered that it had passed through several generations of GEDCOM exports and subsequent imports as I moved data around between databases. The problem was noticed when I read the GEDCOM into an external utility program, as the misplaced MARR tag caused some confusion in the program. After contacting the author of the program, he updated it to highlight such entries, and advised that the genealogy program he used checked for anomolies like this one. I do not think that CFTW created the problem, but it certainly passes it on. In my case the MARR tag occurred within the 0 @I individual records, not the 0 @F family ones. GEDCOM export from CFTW (I use ver 2.31x) produces (and did the same in older versions) a MARR line where it apparently shouldn't be. (I found out because a Gedcom into HTML converter showed a warning concerning the MARR tag and showed only part of the files) Excerpt (first MARR in file): ......... 1 FAMS @F003941@ 0 @F000001@ FAM 1 HUSB @I000001@ 1 WIFE @I000002@ 1 CHIL @I000003@ 1 ENGA 2 DATE 14 JUL 1968 2 NOTE Description: (etc) 2 QUAY 0 1 MARR 2 DATE 23 JUL 1971 2 PLAC Grèafelfing 2 NOTE Description: (etc) ....... When I import into another genealogical program and export it again the first MARR line in file looks apparently fine (like this): ............ 0 @F1@ FAM 1 HUSB @I1@ 1 WIFE @I2@ 1 CHIL @I3@ 1 MARR 2 DATE 23 JUL 1971 2 PLAC Gräfelfing 2 QUAY 3 0 @F2@ FAM ....... As I have no clue how GEDCOM really works, is there anybody of our experts on this list who could comment. Thank you Max max.gschneidinger@zp.siemens.de
HI Last night I downloaded the trial version. I went to my FTM 4.4 and in a couple of minutes made a gedcom of my file of about 12,000 names. I imported the gedcom into Cumberland. On the import box in Cumberland I checked all the option boxes. I believe there were six of them. It took almost 6 hours for Cumberland to read and open the gedcom. It was painstakenly slow reading each individual file and marriage on pass 1 and then doing the same thing basically on pass 2. The third process had a warning that it may take awhile for large files and to be patient, but this process was much faster than the first 2. Perhaps this lengthy several hour process is not normal and I checked one too many task boxes, causing the big delay. I sure hope so. Also it did not pick up all the children in one of my families. It had them all in the individual list, but stopped at 5 children for that marriage when my FTM file had 9 children. I then spent about an hour playing with correcting this. Although the missing children were in the database and had no parents listed(it had "add parent") when I would try to connect that child I would get a response that the child already had parents. Drove me crazy. I just then made up a parent and added it, then disconected it, then connected the child to the right parents. Also, when you make a mistake(I have been known to make a few) you are stuck with it. There is often no "cancel" button on some of the dialog boxes. Now for the good part. Although I am just beginning to use the program, I love the tree displays. Wish there were a "print" box option. Stan

I ran the DOS version under Windows 95 and when you run it in a Windows box and hit the copy icon a cursor appears. You can then take the cursor and highlight anything on the screen and it will copy it. Know what I mean now? Mr.T (Tracy Schell) from The Sunshine State. Snagit can be downloaded from the following address www.tucows.com once at the site select win95/98 and then search for snagit. Roy

G'day Ira, I gather, from the look of the files, that the Stdevent.tps file is of a totally different construction to the Stdev.tps in 2.31. I would assume therefore that it is not possible to "copy" my current User generated events across to 3Beta1 and that I have to re-enter and then describe the event in the new free form to have it recognised? There is no problem with that - it works quite OK - but I was just wondering. HURU, Mike

No, I haven't used "My Briefcase" and not that familiar with it. However, I would think that you could duplicate the c:\cftw directory structure and have it maintain an update of alll files between the two. Hello Ira, a problem occured when splitting database in CFT ver 2.29. I wanted to create separeted databases for some of other trees, contained in main database. It was OK for most trees but one. After I splited main database I got a new one, containing individuals chosen from list. The new database should contain five presons only, all being direct descendants (son, father, grandfather, GGF, GGGF). However their relationships in new database are absolutely mixed: key person appeared to be duplicated and become his own son. Ancestor tree ("tree icon") shows the same person beeing son, father, grandfather and GGF. The tree shows 9 persons, some duplicated, some missing. When cheking content of the database (hot key N) the list there is OK, it contains exactly the five original individuals. I tried to rebuilt key files and restart the program but the result after new splitting was the same. What to do? (I undestand that my new database is small enough to create it simply manually, but I am afraid the problem may occure with large splittings, and than the problems may not be seen immediatelly as in my case...) One more question: when splitting database, key person (IRN 0001) of the new database is set up automatically (according to lowest IRN of alphabetical order I suppose). Is it possible to change person with IRN 0001 to another than the one set up by splitting program? Thanks and best regards Petr

Hi all, I tried the SnagIt print and copy utility and discovered that this tool can easily extract 'text-only' from any active window. The text will be saved in a txt-file which you'll have to name. From then on you can do whatever you like with this file. But... it would be much nicer if we could do this from a 'shortcut' within the CFT program itself. Another utility called HARDCOPY will copy and print, in graphics mode, the exact contents of the active window. I use these screen prints very often to do some 'off-line' preparation work. It replaces the good-old card system I used for many years. Ted Voordouw e-mail: ted_voordouw@hp.com

Not sure of the technical aspects of all of this but it seems like there should be an easy way to do it. Perhaps a "report" of the main screen that will go to auto preview mode with one click of an icon or keystroke? Mr.T (Tracy Schell) from The Sunshine State. G'day Don, > My keyboard has a Print Screen Key but it is only for DOS Programs I >understand. Isn't there a way to bring back it's use in Windows also. If you do a "Print Screen" and then open up the Accessory "PAINT" then Edit -> Paste you will have your screen image which you can then print out. Just checked - or any other graphics package. HURU, Mike
****** I am know way connected to this company or program******* There is a program called SNAGIT 32 that allows you to draw a box around what you want to print and then print the info, or you can save to clipboard, disk etc. you can also select to print the entire screen etc. I just tryed it with CFTW 2.30x and it works just fine..... Isn't there a way to bring back it's use in Windows also. Yes, it does also work in Windows. But in Windows when you press the Print Screen button it copies a graphic of the window to the clipboard. Then you can go to a graphics program or word processing program and do a paste to get an image of that screen. Then you can print from there.
