Normally a Rebuild takes care of this. If things seem to be fine now I think you can feel safe to carry on. Ira ---------------------------------------------------------- Ira J. 3. Dear Ira, Dear Sigurd, Ref.: Win95 rev a ; Cftw 2.32x ; print Reports After later revisions, 2.32 or 2.31, I do not remember, some reports do not print corretily, due, no doubt, font problem. Following Mr. Sigurd suggestion to use Registry edit, I see that the Lund fonts are listed properly. But I have observed, too, that Lunds fonts are in Upper case, and fonts of other programs are in lower case letters. With Edit > Modify I changed the upper case letters to lower case. After that, the reports now print beautifully. I do not known if the correction of font installation are due to the "edition" only or due to lower case modification. All the best. Thanks. 3. I have had some problems in the (not so far) past with events spontaneously moving from one individual to another (quite far from each other in the tree). Rebuilding did not correct this. I amended everything by hand and since then I "rebuild" every time before I close the program. Or when I am entering new data I rebuilt after -say- every 20 new persons. Since then I have had no problems. Hope this will remain so. Nevertheless I would like to advise Ira to build the most stable database available for Version 3! 3. >The fonts seem to be installed each time you load cftw and the two panels >appear each time you reload. The standard behaves as noted above as before. >How should the standard printout look? The LUND fonts are more compressed (horizontally) than most fonts. They are very similar to an Arial font but more compressed so as to fit more text in a column and ALL reports should print without any overlap. If text is really too large to fit in the space of columnar reports (such as lists) then it should get truncated before any overlapping to the next column occurs. Thus, if you see overlapping then it's basically guaranteed that the Lund fonts aren't properly installed. I have received a few comments such as yours that seem to indicate that the LUND fonts can't get installed even though they are copied to the c:\windows\font directory and double clicked inside Explorer. My only thought was what Sigurd posted yesterday (and today) about there being problems with this in some versions of Win95. My only suggestion is to edit the registry as he gave instructions to do. I clicked on birth and >it had her married to a David DURRENCE yet she is married to a BLACK. >I looked Durrence up and he is from my mothers side of the family and >married to a DOUGLASS. Why is this happening? A while back (starting maybe 3 years ago) I had "Exactly" the same type of problem(s). People married to the wrong people, dates turning up in the wrong place (every birth was one generation off). Rebuild would not work to correct the problem(s). The only solution was to run a gedcom export. Years ago I passed this info onto Ira and he did try to assist me. Ira was able to repair my data base at least twice when I couldn't get anything to work right. BUT now to today. My rebuilds will NOT work, the Gedcom export runs into problems and will not import properly, data will not go into the proper place. Ira tried to clear it up but said I had some sort of a corrupted data base. After so many problems I would back up after entering small groups of data. Now when I run the restore I get that the restore didn't work properly. So with about 17,000 names I have an almost useless data base. You say everything seems to print ok, but I say it is not okay because you are getting text printing on top of each other. This is the precise problem caused by not having LUND fonts properly installed. Once again: There are a set of 4 LUND fonts that were supposed to be installed when CFT-Win is installed. But for some reason, occaisionally, I get reports that the fonts didn't get installed. This is normally noticable by a few letters being cut off on the right hand side or on list reports where one column seems to run into the next. The solution: 1. If you are using Windows 3.1 go to the Control Panel and Fonts and install the 4 Lund fonts. They should have been copied into the c:\windows\system directory. 2. If you are using Window 95 then use Explorer to find the fonts. They should be in c:\windows\fonts. (Although some earlier versions of CFT-Win inadvertantly installed inot c:\windows\font - without the "s". If this is the case you may copy the four files to the proper location.) Anyway, if you double mouse-click on the fonts one at a time to view them, this should install them so that they will be recognized by CFT-Win - as well as other programs. They are identical to those in the ..\cftw directory, and to >those from 2.30. > This message I posted some time ago, but I repost it now. I think I have the final solution to the fonts problem. For one reason or another some fonts - not only the four Lund fonts - will not install properly. I think it has with later versions of Windows 95 to do. You might install the Lund fonts the following way: 1. From the Start-menu choose Run. 2. Write Regedit and press enter. 3. Open the following Folders: -HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE -SOFTWARE -Microsoft -Windows -CurrentVersion -Fonts 4. From the Edit Menu (or right click) choose -New -String Value 5. Write Lund Sans Bold (True Type) 6. From the Edit Menu choose (the new Lund Sans Bold (True Type) should be highlighted) -Modify 7. Write Lundsb.ttf and press the OK button Now the first font is permanently installed. Repeat step 4 to 7 for the other three fonts like this: 4. From the Edit Menu (or right click) choose -New -String Value 5. Write Lund Sans Normal (True Type) 6. From the Edit Menu choose (the new Lund Sans Normal (True Type) should be highlighted) -Modify 7. Write Lunds.ttf and press the OK button 4. From the Edit Menu (or right click) choose -New -String Value 5. Write Lund SansNarrow Normal (True Type) 6. From the Edit Menu choose (the new Lund SansNarrow Normal (True Type) should be highlighted) -Modify 7. Write Lundsn.ttf and press the OK button 4. From the Edit Menu (or right click) choose -New -String Value 5. Write Lund SansNarrow Bold (True Type) 6. From the Edit Menu choose (the new Lund SansNarrow Bold (True Type) should be highlighted) -Modify 7. Write Lundsnb.ttf and press the OK button Regards Sigurd Eliassen Norway

    3. I recently upgraded to 2.32 from 2.30. I still get the error on loading: a panel pops up saying the fonts were installed, which is followed by another that says they were not installed properly. The dates on the fonts in the \windows\fonts directory are always the date and time of the last useage of the program. They are identical to those in the ..\cftw directory, and to those from 2.30. Maybe I have not paid attention to all the news flying by, but don't recall how to wipe out these panels coming up. Oh yes, everything seems to print ok, such as it is. e.g. the "Standard" printout seems to squeeze the data on top of each other so you don't get it all printed unless you write to a file and print in 6 point courier in lanscape.

    2. Tracy - I had a similar problem; I found that if I used the "rebuild key files" thingy (please excuse the "technical" term) from the pull down menu at the top, the programme sorted it all out! What seems to cause it, more crucially, is in the difference between the "add" and "insert"; if you place your highlighted do dadd or arrow in between two events and then type add rather than insert, it seems to gum up the works. I have a rule - add at the the end, insert in between, and it seems to happen less often now. Hope this helps. Secondly, I have been unsubscribed for a few weeks - busy season for us in the tourist trade - has there been an updated version of the programme that I've missed? Only I notice from the recent correspondence that the sources thingy (that word again) seems to have been changed to do exactly what I have always wanted it to do .. I am using a particular book for a lot of information, and having hundreds of sources i.e Book page 1, Book page 2, etc is very tedious; it would be good if I could use one source for the book itself and then just have a sub list for the page number. Is that what it does? And if there was an update I missed, how can I get it? I did purchase the version I have, so I'm entitled, I think .. does this mean you have to be permanently subscribed to this list to get informed of updates? Sorry, lots of questions .. lots of answers, please? best wishes, Moira
