Yes, Cumberland Family Tree for Windows 95 is a 32-bit program. It does not handle PAF 3.0 files directly. However, you can transfer your data from PAF to CFT-Win using GEDCOM. I do not know if there are other truly 32-bit genealogy programs on the market, although I woudl think there are. Ira ---------------------------------------------------------- Ira J. 3. I guess I've been lucky with CFTW. I have never had a FREEZE UP, even using the older version 2.23. It may be because I've really just started and don't have that much in it. I have been using Win 95 (latest version) and am now using version 2.32. -----Original Message----- From: Scott H. 3. I am using version 2.32 on Win 95. This happens when I try to use the "Auto-Backup". (what is the "Normal Back-up" you refer to?) Here are the steps I go thru for a backup: 1. After making my entries and I am finished working on these I click on "file". 2. Then click "close database". This gives me; Error 160: (or 280 sometimes) Backup Was Unsuccessful. 3. I then click on "close" (with-in the "automatic Database Backup" window) 4. This takes me to the CFT Database Window where I click on "Backup". 5. This takes me to "Backup, Select Backup Database & Destination". 6. I then click on "Select". 7. This takes me to "Select Destination Backup File". 8. I then select "Folder" and click "OK". 9. I then get a caution window saying "This file already exists. Do you want to replace it?" I click "Yes". 10. This takes me to "Select Destination Backup File" where I click on "Backup". 11. I then get the "Overwrite" window which tells me the previous file already exists. 12. I then click "Yes" and the backup finally is completed. Thanks for any help! I no longer have any problem with backups using the latest version (2.32 I think) in windows 98, it always asks on exiting the program if I want to back up, and does so if I say yes. However, the above may be a good idea for versions 3 or so. That is, in the initial setup, and subsequently, a user should be able to specify how many back up editions they would like to use. The system could then rotate and keep more than one version. Some other software applications, like Quicken, does this. Since I have other backup means for important and frequently changed files, my present response would be one. As you can see, the cautious (i.e. experienced) user may wish for more. My happiness level has often been marred by having one too few or too old a back up!

    3. Using ver 2.32, you get the ERROR message after about 2 backups using Normal Backup. By the way, no FREEZE UP using ver 2.32 and Win 95 [latest version]. It is good to keep several different backup zip files of your data in case you discover a problem with either an individual record within the data base (sometimes I accidentally wipe out a date, for example) or with the entire database. Doing this allows one the option of restoring the database to the state it was in at a time before the problem appeared or developed. Always restore from the most recent backup zip file first. Depending on the seriousness of the problem, iIf it turns out that the problem existed in that backup also you will be able to try restoring from the second most recent backup zip file and so on until you find one that is in good condition. 3. George - I have a lot of stuff on mine and I have installed Win98. I have just as many crashes as before, but they are caused by different things. There seems to be certain operations in some of my programs that ALWAYS causes a crash. I have Lotus SmartSuite and if I click on the Font tab on the Properties dialog box for 1-2-3, it always crashes. I just haven't had time yet to check with Lotus about that. There may be a fix out by now. I think I am going to back up my stuff with a tape, reformat the hard drives and do a clean install of 98 and see if that helps.Reinstall the programs from the original disks and copy back the data files. The majority of version 4.00.950 users have never had any problems; however, depending on WHAT ELSE is installed on the system, some of the original .dll files give users fits. If a user puts as much junk on his/her system as I have on mine, I can GUARANTEE that there will be hangups, crashes, freeze-ups, etc. Then, even though it won't make a complete cure, it is time to get those updated files from the MS web site. I STILL can't get rid of ALL the crashes in EXPLORER.EXE caused by .dll files from other programs. I have identified some of them as coming from QuickTime, but I just CAN'T uninstall that program. I just keep sitting here hoping that Apple will put out an upgrade to QT that takes care of these problems. MS certainly isn't going to do it with Win95, since Win98 is out. SgtGeorge
