I always thought it was my system, but last week I loaded CFT-Win onto another system (also v2.32 & Win95), and the same thing happens. The problem frequently occurs when I hit <CTRL>+<L> or <CTRL>+<P> to move to the Location box or Location list, when I attempt to access the Source screen and Source List with <CTRL>+<S>, and most often when I attempt to close an Edit screen with <CTRL>+<C>. It's aggravating, but I'm used to it now. Since I have not seen this problem mentioned before, I chose not to bring it up... and besides, it's possible that the problem is my systems and/or keyboards. Btw, I d/l the new Beta, and I can't wait for the release of v3. I love it!! Greg
Ira Just a few notes on Ver 3 Beta 2. I like the style keep up the good work. I have noted the following problems. 1. I cant get the story to work at all. It gives me a Please Wait message and then produces a blank screen. 2. Database Verification produces Date of Birth or Date of Christening before parents marriage where there is no marriage event or the date of marriage is only YYYY but the date of Birth is DD MMM YYYY. 3. It is possible to Drag events in the Individual Edit Window but if they are dragged off the bottom of the list it seems to corrupt the display and possibly the database. If a sort is attempted a Record Not Found error is produced. 4. The List Option on the Edit Address window only shows 1 entry even when there should be several. Could this window have a print option as well? 5. Does Global Search need a STOP button to terminate overlong searches. Also how about a search of event dates? Hi Ira and all, Just tried out the Beta version for the first time yesterday and...Wow! I like it! Had many problems when I tried to put accent caracters in sentences so I limited my "testing" with french words with no accents! Been in and out of the mailing list, so be patient with me if do report something already discussed. Wondering what the "Mark as preferred child" means. I clicked on it and an asterisk appears besides the selected child but then, when I decided to "re-arrange" the child order, the asterisk stayed at the same place and now I cannot remove it! It doesn't go away even if I start a new database!!! There's no space between the given name and the surname of individuals. We have to insert a space ourselves. Ok not much of a problem here but since we don't have this with version 2..... "Address List", when I went to look at the address list, only 1 individual appeared on the list even if I entered the even for a couple. The two individuals should be on that list right? I've checked for the event in both individuals and it's there. "Witness", I've entered a different sentence for a male and a female witness for the event "Baptism (cannot substitute for birth). I've entered a male and a female as witnesses for that event, and when I go to read the story sentence for the male, it's ok, but the female has the sentence for the male. Didn't tried any other event for this problem. "Places", when entering a place that has accents, when you go and click the "accents" tab, the place (not yet completed) is considered as finished and was registered in the place editor. When I had a place name with for example, 4 accents total, I would have 4 (unfinished) places in my place editor. I'm aware that this is a Beta version and these are not very big problems but since we have to chance to try it out..... Keep up the good work Ira and don't worry for the delay of version 3, we are very happy with version 2 at this present moment, I know I am!! Because I never found the source of the problem with the "alt-keys" functions and the "tab" key with the 32 bit version when I tried it. The commands were not responding well (have to do 3 times the same command to finally have it!) and since I'm not a "mouse" user, the key commands are very important to me. The 16 bit version don't do this. Although it's been a while since I've tried the 32 bit version, maybe the problem is solved? I really hope so. Will have to check that out. I told you, Gang, I miss out on all the fun! My 6 year old system has gone from Win 3.1 to WIN95. I've rigorously kept up-to-date on upgrades, patches, fixes, etc. I don't have the listed problems, Ira, but I did find two versions of regsvr32.exe: C:\Windows\System has version 4.00.1381 C:\CFTW has version 4.00 Floyd E. However, I'm currently thinking of upgrading at least the OS if not the entire computer sometime during the next year. In other words, by the time v.3 is ready I'd hope to have a system capable of running 32-bit software. Meanwhile, I'm content to stay with the version of CFTW I have - and since it rarely gives me problems, I wouldn't raise any objection if you did decide to stop supporting it. -- Linda Sutherland linda.sutherland@zetnet.co.uk

Moira, This happens sometimes when taking the text information and putting it into a Microsoft application, such as Word Pad. Word Pad can't understand the small fonts used for the sources and translates them to symbols. The original info in CFTW remains the same though, no change there. It is quite a hassle to keep up with both 16 bit AND 32 bit versions of my programs. I would like to drop the maintaining and updating of the 16-bit version of CFT-Win (and UCC). I know this is not much of a formal survey, but I was wondering how many out there are still with Win 3.1? CFT-Win Ver 3 will definately be 32-bit only (Windows 95/98/NT). But I am beginning to consider dropping the 16-bit version NOW! Ira ---------------------------------------------------------- Ira J. I was wondering if I could get some help trying to figure out my consistent problems with CFT-Win Ver 2. I have two problems that keep coming up: 1. The Lund fonts not getting installed properly. 2. the Spellcheck and Backup ZIP OCX's not getting installed properly. The problems are inconsistent and the majority of people don't seemt o have any problems. But there are enough people who keep complaining about little problems here that I have got to think about them some more and see what I can do to try to resolve these problems. I have 2 ideas about what may be causing the OCX problems. 1. Perhaps the files in the SYSDLL ZIPs on my web site are missing and these are the cause of the problem. I could distribute these files with every program. They are over 1meg Zipped! and thus would require 3 disks rather than the present 2 disks - which might be fine for sending disks - but downloading is not quite so fine. 2. Perhaps the REGSVR32.EXE program - which registers the OCXs - is different on different computers. Especially I am thinking that Windows 98 may be has a newer version of this file. In double checking my computer I realize that I actually have THREE versions of this scattered around: Ver 1.00 Ver 4.00 Ver 5.00.1586.1 Ver 4 is the one that is being distributed with CFT-Win Ver 2 and Ver 3 beta. Could someone with Windows 98 do a search on their system for REGSVR32.EXE. Do a right click and go to Properties, the second tab will show the version number. I'm especially curious as to the version number on the one in c:\windows\system directory. It might be that I could solve the OCX problem by including the newer regsvr32.exe AND the all the sysdll files. But then how do I solve the LUND font problem? I have had people who have used Explorer copy these files from c:\cftw to c:\windows\font and it still not get registered. I have had people use the Settings - Control Panel and use the FONTS program there - AND it still won't install the fonts. The only thing that seems to work in these cases is the manual editing of the Windows Registry. Well, perhaps then I have got to figure out how to programmatically change the windows registry directly!! Thanks for any help. Ira ---------------------------------------------------------- Ira J. Jon - thanks for the list of comments and suggestions. To comment on a couple of them: >5. A little explanation of how to use the new event grammar would be helpful. Are you speaking of how to edit the sentences in the Std Events? If this is the case here goes: All names, places, dates are repositioned within the sentences based on "replacable parameters" as follows: %N - gets replaced with the person's name %S - is the spouses name %D - is the date (the actual date format can be changed in Story Options) %P - is the place name %M - is Misc Data %A - is Address I think that is all of them. Also there may be optional words that you may onyl want to show up of a certain piece of data exists. . Thes optional words are enclosed in curly brackets { } and preceded by the letter (same as above) of the data to check for. Example m{by} means only print the word "by" if the Misc Data is present as in: %N was baptised %D p{at} %P m{by} %M. If only date is present: Jeff was baptised 24 July 1878. If place and date present but no misc data: Jeff was baptised 24 July 1878 at Fifth Ward Chapel, Cook, Ohio. If no place but misc data present: Jeff was baptised 24 July 1878 by Reverend Green. If no date but place and misc data: Jeff was baptised at Fifth Ward Chapel, Cook Ohio by Reverend Green. Hope this helps. >6. Please put in a way of defining the font style, size, and alignment for >ALL general and event notes at once. Otherwise it will be nearly >impossible to go through tens of thousands of notes to change them all to >the same format. Go to Options Menu - Program Configuration - Language Tab. Highlight English and press the Font button. You might drop the size down from 10 to 9 and get more stuff on smaller windows. This sets the defaults for all the notes. BUT you must do this BEFORE you import from Ver 2 - as I believe that all notes will get placed into the notes with the font attributes of the current language. The LUND font problem. The superscript lettering only works properly if the LUND fonts are installed properly. There are a set of 4 LUND fonts that were supposed to be installed when CFT-Win is installed. But for some reason, occaisionally, I get reports that the fonts didn't get installed. This is normally noticable by a few letters being cut off on the right hand side or on list reports where one column seems to run into the next. The solution: 1. If you are using Windows 3.1 go to the Control Panel and Fonts and install the 4 Lund fonts. They should have been copied into the c:\windows\system directory. 2. If you are using Window 95 then use Explorer to find the fonts. They should be in c:\windows\fonts. (Although some earlier versions of CFT-Win inadvertantly installed inot c:\windows\font - without the "s". If this is the case you may copy the four files to the proper location.) Anyway, if you double mouse-click on the fonts one at a time to view them, this should install them so that they will be recognized by CFT-Win - as well as other programs. Ira and all, I've been playing around with B-2 (sounds like a bomber) for a couple of days and over all it looks just fine. A few thoughts on the story thus far: 1. It was confusing to start up in the absence of specific instructions beyond loading. It took a long time to realize I had to enter a "new" data base name and then use that new name to get to the main screen where I could import my Myers database from v.2. Now I know how. 2. Could there be an option to put the second row of buttons on the bottom, where they have had to option to be in v.2? This is what one expects. 3. All those zeros in the IRN column are distracting for those of us who do not have a six-figure database. Could leading zeros please be suppressed? 4. For those of us with small screens (mine is 14"), there is not quite enough room for some long names. Could some of the columns at left be tightened up a bit to permit more space? 5. A little explanation of how to use the new event grammar would be helpful. 6. Please put in a way of defining the font style, size, and alignment for ALL general and event notes at once. Otherwise it will be nearly impossible to go through tens of thousands of notes to change them all to the same format. Really good job; that's it for now. I have just posted CFT Version 3 Beta 2 on my Web Site. I have greatly improved all the editing functions and added all of the Tools on the Tools Menu. Reports and Indexed Book have been outlined and you can get an idea of which reports I plan to produce in Ver 3. Only the following are left to complete: * GEDCOM Import/Export * Database Split & Merge Utilities * Backup/ Restore * All Reports (This is a big one and will take the most time) * Indexed Book * Web (HTML) output * Electronic Viewer It is still a long list with lots of new reports. Luckily, I have had some time recently to devote to Ver 3. Even if I can continue at the current pace, I still expect many months before Ver 3 is complete. I still tell people it'll be a year - but I think I have been saying that for at least a year - already. Sorry, for the bad estimate on working on this - but I am still highly interested and working on it when I can. 90% of Ver 3 has been newly reprogrammed. The internal database structure has changed so dramatically that hardly any functions from Ver 2 could be incoporated in Ver 3. The same can be said for all reports. They will all basically have to be re-programmed from scratch - thus the biggest reason for the long - 2 years or more to write this version (and that while holding another full time job, teaching early morning - 6 am -scripture study to High School students 5 days a week, and trying to make some family time for my wife and six kids)! Yes, there is the Database Merge function on the Main Window (when you close a database). Press F1 for help when you get there before beginning the Merge. I suggest reading about the Merge Database in the help before the attempt. Another suggestion is to download the latest Ver 2.32 before the merge but after you've done the "special" if it is still there. Ira ---------------------------------------------------------- Ira J. I am finally learning how to do GEDCOM imports. I have imported 3 separate databases into separate CFT databases. There is a lot of overlap, so I would like to merge into my main database. I noticed that there were a number of events (specifically LDS events) that were in the last 4 or 5 years ( for people who died centuries ago!). I have no idea where these came from, but suspect it is some error in translation? I am using 2.23. 2 questions: 1) Is there some way I can flag all records in a database with a specific source? I would like to automjatically create a source recordfor each individual and event that states the source as "Jim Browns GEDCOM files". 2) Is there an automatic or interactive way that I can merge all of this information into one database (I have 2800 names in my main DB, and each of the imported ones is between 5 and 6 thousand!)
