    1. Version 3 Beta 2 - Story Tab
    2. David Bennett
    3. Ira and All, I think the problems with the story tab lies with the Story Options. I had been testing with all the options checked. When I unchecked all the options I started to see results. For Example 1. If the Story Options/Include Individual Notes is Checked then only those people with an Individual Note with produce results. 2. If Story Options/Include Event Notes is checked then very inconsistent results are produced. I think only events added under Beta 2 are printed with no other details at all. I’ve run out of time for now but thought this information might be of interest to others. 3. Just a reminder that users may now search the archives at RootsWeb for messages that have been sent to these various Mailing Lists in the past. If your email browser does NOT allow you to click on a link and go there, then just highlight the one you want and copy it to your clipboard. In your web browser, paste in that copied URL. If you want to access the Archive searcher for Mailing Lists other than the ones I have listed here, use the same URL but replace the actual List name with the one you want. Use the one for AYLOR above, but replace "AYLOR-L" with the name of the other, e.g. "SMITH-L". SgtGeorge Listowner

    3. G'day Ira, > The problem seems to be in the "Include Individual Note" and "Include >Event Notes". If I leave these unchecked the story works fine. If I >check just one, it does not matter which one, or both, no story at all. >The three options for "In Parent/Child Events" seem to work OK That seems to happen also with me BUT IF I HAVE an INDIVIDUAL note and "Include Individual Note" is checked it is OK. If I do NOT have an Individual Note and "Include Individual Note" is checked - NO GOOD. Ed Blakeley said:- > AS SOON AS you click Include Event >Notes, you lose everything except individual notes. Everything else seems >to work OK except Include Event Notes. I find I still have SOME Event Notes that print with the Individual note last of all (as I believe it should). I have just finished an experiment. I had found that in the foregoing I realised that those Event Notes that did print started from the latest one (say 1998) and printed back to the point where an event DID NOT have a note but they did print in correct date sequence thus:- Individual Note 1930 Event with note 1940 Event with note 1950 Event WITHOUT note 1960 Event with note 1970 Event with note These printed from 1960 onwards with the Individual Note last. I then went on and inserted a TEST NOTE in all Events EXCEPT the Christening (which was totally blank but had not been removed from the Individual Window) and ALL worked. EUREKA!! I then rechecked my own "story" where I have some Events without notes and all was blank again. I then removed the INDIVIDUAL NOTE from my main test BUT left the "Include Individual Note" checked and VOILA! - ALL was BLANK again. Unchecked "Include Individual Note" and BACK the full story. My guess is that the problem is caused by having either of the "Include...Notes" boxes checked when ever there are:- (a) Events WITHOUT Notes. (b) Individual WITHOUT Notes Just to finish things off, I then DELETED one of my User Events that was in my main test Individual BUT left data ( as it would be after an Import). I still got my story OK but there was a "nonsense" in the Event - It took the "value" of either the event before or after (they were both the same. The note printed correctly thus:- Nan and "Tusky" [0007] moved about 1960. (Actually they took up Lawn Bowls) It would appear that she "blossomed" to a greater degree than he. Regarding the FONT problem, all options EXCEPT "Main Text" work as they should. Anything set for "Main Text" still effects ALL Text EXCEPT for the NAMES in a story which show according to the specific setting in Names/Surnames. BTW - The Names example seems to contain the surname "Smith" which is not effected by that setting. Phew! It sure is great how this Forum collectively gets together to sort out a problem :-) HURU, Mike

    3. Ira - Got it now! Thanks for the clues. "Word Code not in file " does involve the dates. I had a corrupted date in an event where I got that message. HOWEVER - there still is a problem in Story Options. When I go to Story Options and select Individual Notes and nothing else - Include Parent/Child Events - None; Include Free Format Dates - Do not show, then you get everything except event notes. AS SOON AS you click Include Event Notes, you lose everything except individual notes. Everything else seems to work OK except Include Event Notes. If so, can anybody explain to me what are >documents and what are sources? Thank you. Using your example above I would not put a Parish Register as a Document. I would list them all as sources. Examples: This entry goes into the "Reference": "Parish Register", Sogn Parish Church, Hole, Rogaland, Norway, 1623-1850. Then under the detail records go things like: p. 24. p. 56. Then in the note are you mmight make an entry such as: This record indicates mother's name as Gunhild Sorensen, but does not list father's name. When I eventually get around to merging all this data together for reports you would get complete sources that looked like: "Parish Register", Sogn Parish Church, Hole, Rogaland, Norway, 1623-1850. p. 24. "Parish Register", Sogn Parish Church, Hole, Rogaland, Norway, 1623-1850. p. 56. This record indicates mother's name as Gunhild Sorensen, but does not list father's name. There is a LOT of room in Reference, details and in note areas - so use them for this purpose. A document is only used for long transcriptions such as transcribing an entire WILL. Documents are also used for stand alone notes such as general database information or for creating chapter commentary for indexed books, etc. I will try to put more information int he printed manual and help on proper use of sources with more examples than in Ver 2 manual on writing clear source notes. This is an area that does not a lot of clear defining. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------ PLACES VS ADDRESSES >Ira, maybe you should give us some instruction how to put data into source >editor in ver.2 to be than converted into ver.3 two-level editor? (Similar >as I asked about Places - Addresses). Can't remember the question about places-address, but assume you are asking for the differences between a place and an address. In Ver 3 you use the ADDRESS event to record an address - and when you record the address press the Enter key after each line. Enter a proper address that would be used for mailing a letter - such as: 385 Idaho Springs Road Clarksville, TN 37043 USA But a place would normally be a location that is not a complete mailing address and any event (except an address) will use a place. Examples: Clarksville, Montgomery, Tennessee City Cemetary, Clarksville, Tennessee Atlanta Temple, Atlanta, Georgia Hope you can see the difference. An "address" will get reformatted for things like a story report (example: 385 Idaho Springs Road, Clarksville, TN 37043, USA) but there will also be a mailing label report which will prin them as needed for mailing lables. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------ CONVERTING VER 2 SOURCES to VER 3 SOURCES A few months back I did write an explanation about how to convert easily from Ver 2 to Ver 3. It is work, but you will need to convert from the single level type source of Ver 3 to the double level of type 3. Test this, but as per an earlier warning level don't start doing it expecting to keep this data for the next Ver3 beta - as the data structure will definately change. let me hunt for it..... Can't find it. Does anyone have the old message from a few months back. i think I have a print out in my file... Yup, I found it - no date - but the title says: Re: cftw3-beta 1 - sources I'll type it in later if no one can find the message. Ira ---------------------------------------------------------- Ira J. Is there an alternative, such as Alt+something? If there is a right click in Ver 2 it is not something I have control over. It must be a function of windows or something. The behavior in Ver 3 of the note area is very consistent with behavior within any word processor. Highlighting ALL text is as simple as this: Press Ctrl-Home to go to top. Hold shift key down. Press ctrl-End to go to bottom. It's all highlighted now. This is quite standard for all word processors, text areas in any program that I have ever tried in Windows. 3. G'day, >After further testing I can confirm that I am getting exactly the same results as Jerry >Dimsdale. >Story Tab only reports the Individuals Notes and nothing else. I have rechecked my DB which is the one I imported from v2.32 and find the following:- 1. For a person who had an Individual note in v2.32 a large proportion (but not all) event notes would appear in the story tab but not necessarily in the correct date sequence. 2. I added (in 3Beta2) an individual note to a person who had event notes (but no individual note) at the time of import and ONE (the last) event note was then displayed together with the "Test" individual note. 3. I then went back and added a TEST individual note to the person (used in 2 above) in v2.32 and re-imported the DB with a new 3Beta2 name. The story result was the same. Possibly of relevance is that I have a LOT of "USER Events" (which of course I have to re create in 3Beta2) perhaps these have something to do with the problem. Having said that, one of the events that does NOT show in (1 above) is "First Date" which is a CFT-Win Standard and another is "Marriage" which is a GEDCOM. While on the subject I note the following in the Help File:- " There are also a number of CFT-Win standard events. When you add your own, you should designate them as User events." I have probably been guilty of either slightly modifying a CFT-Win event verb etc. or even adding a User event and calling it a CFT-Win one (in the early days I knew no better :-() although I cannot see this as contributing to the problem.
