    3. When you are merging two databases, how do you tell the program to combine all the names when merging matched individuals? Mike

    3. Hi Walter Are you sure that sometimes CFTW is the only program running when you have a crash? Hit Ctrl/Alt/Del and see what else is running in the background. There may be a rogue program there. When was the last time you defragmented your hard drive? How big is your swap file? How full is your hard drive? Have you tried re-installing Win 95 or CFTW? I never used CFTW v2.xx. I went straight from v1.xx to v3.01 ( I actually ran the beta versions for some time ). I have never had a crash with v3.xx but I used to get them with v1.xx when I tried to run a long report. I do regular maintenance on my system using Norton System Works 2000 and very rarely have any trouble and never with CFTW which is often running in the background all day. Microsoft Office sometimes gives me problems especially if I have a number of applications and big files open. I have Win 98 2nd edition. I suggest you upgrade to CFTW v3.05, it won't cost you anything for 45 days. Save a copy of your v 2.50 database files in case you want to go back. If you still have a problem I think you should upgrade your Win 95 to Win 98 2nd Edition or Win ME. I still have an old system running Win 95 and it always gave me no end of trouble and still does. The only good thing that can be said about Win 95 is that it is better than Win 3.1. 3. To add another virus checker for a clean sweep. I use an up to date version of VET (it,s Australian so you may not have heard of it!) and like the programs used by the other respondents it was smart enough to know that what was going on was an installation not a virus. I have had no trouble downloading or using 3.06. While I'm on air may I say I love the new version - the photos do not slow it down noticeably (Pentium II 400Mhz) but I have always been careful to (1) keep them small; (2) use jpeg (.jpg) formats not bitmap (.bmp); and (3) stick to black & white not colour. Also I have only one printer so the loss of the ability to select another one is of as much a concern to me as the length of the individual hairs on my dog's tail! 2. Harvey Nimmo
    3. Hi Walter, It seems my configuration is similar to yours which is now pretty stable. I can't really explain in detail how stability was achieved...didn't write it all down! Of course, no-one can guarantee success without any kind of diagnosis, so you can't be sure whether such forum tips will solve your problem. CFTW is probably not the cause of your problem, but rather your configuration. How much disk space is free, for example? Have you allocated a fixed amount of Swap space (virtual memory) or have you left it variable as per Windows standard? Have you done a defragmentation? recently? 1. If you have a Pentium 2, then you may have to install the Intel patch PIIX4 for Windows 95/Intel Bus Master IDE Drivers 3.01. I suppose your machine should have been delivered with it installed, but mine wasn't, apparently. A Diskette came with the computer. 2. Have you tried bringing your Windows 95 configuration up to date by downloading Microsoft's newer service release et al? One of the biggest stability improvements, if I remember correctly was achieved, with version 2.x of Winsock (Crashes had been occurring while I was on line) 3. Sandra 2000 from SiSoft (Freeware for private use) I found to be very useful to diagnose my system. It gave me a whole lot of tips which I followed (except the one to update my BIOS!) and which resulted in better stability and performance. Greetings Harvey Nimmo > >Hi, All. 3. Hi, All. Here's one for you. Apparently, I must be the only guy in the world having trouble with CFTW. If you will remember, I wrote to the list once before. I'm the guy who keeps getting crashes when CFTW is running. I have tried to discover some rhyme or reason for my problem, but it seems that almost all crashes involve CFTW in one way or another. These crashes usually happen when Microsoft Outlook Express (which I loathe and despise) is running simultaneously with CFTW, but not always. Sometimes CFTW crashes when it is the only program running. I love this program and I would hate to have to switch to another one, but I've just got to find some answers or I am going to be forced to take that most undesirable step. Recently, a friend of mine loaned me a copy of an older version of one of the biggest--if not THE biggest--commercial genealogy programs in the States. Sad to say, I have had no crashes with it--whether Outlook Express is running or not. Naturally, I don't like it as much as I like Cumberland, but if these crashes continue I'm afraid I'm going to lose more of my data than I already have, and something is just going to have to give. Perhaps someone on this list has some new suggestions. If so, lay on MacDuff. I'm all ears--both literally and figuratively. I have the 32-bit 2.50x version of CFTW, which I have upgraded once or twice from the Cumberland web page. I use a Compaq 4508 Presario computer with 2.98 GB of hard drive and 48 MG of RAM (updated from the original 16, I think). This computer also has an Intel Pentium 200MHz processor with MMX technology. I realize that this is a rather outdated model, but I am not in position to buy another computer, so I'll have to make do with the one I've got. Anyhow: I also use Microsoft Windows 95 and a continuously running Norton 4.0 anti-virus with the latest virus definitions. (At one time, I thought this older version of Norton might be causing my problems, but I disabled it and, unfortunately, got the same results. So I don't that's the cause of all my woes. Darn it!) If anyone has any ideas at all, please respond to this message. I am legally blind and simply do not wish to change genealogy programs at this time. As a person of very limited vision, I find Cumberland to be an exceptionally easy and uncluttered program to use. So: any help would be very greatly appreciated. In short, please help save a fellow CTFW user from having to make the switch from "our" program to one of those "other" programs. walt boswell [email protected] P.S. 3. Ira, I think your program is good or I would not depend on it with my valued information. I understand not advertising but, I would gladly recommend it to others. I will suggest this if you have no objection. I would like to use your logo on my homepage linking to the Cumberland homepage. I think word of mouth is the best advertising anyone could have. New users see there is no profit to be made. Only customers suggesting a good program. I do not see you going "out of bussiness" anytime soon but big companies do tend to eat smaller ones. Dawn

One reason is that I do no advertising. I spend no money on advertising. The few times I tried never paid and I'd rather spend time on developement and such, rather than time on pushing the product. I'm a programmer - not a marketer. Many of the other programs have big companies behind them to help push and promote their product. I appreciate your suggestions on others to help promote the program. My sales have been relatively flat for 5 years or so (the first 5 being a ramp-up period) and I have kind of gotten used to the idea of being a small player. Even if my sales doubled, it still wouldn't be enough to support me financially and then I'd have twice as much support. I'm not trying to talk anyone out of helping promote the program. All I am saying is that my sales would likely have to increase by multiple amounts in order to turn my company into a fully-fledged company and I just don't see that happening. 3. I have Norton 5.0 with up to date virus definitions. I also downloaded ver 3.06 and installed last night. No virus was found. Everything is fine.
