The following sentence is written when the children are listed: "Ira and Ira had the following children:" Sigurd Eliassen Norway

    3. The 'fix' for outlook express: General knowledge among a number of my cyber-savy friends with similar experiences to yours, is that Outlook Express is a particularly bad piece of work. It is also the target program and the back door entry for most viri beamed at MSFT. If anything will fail it will be OE, and it will drag the rest of the system down with it. It's companion IE isn't much better, and it's also a common virus target. It's considered to be a very unsafe web browser. If you want to avoid crashes and infections don't use OE or IE, they're just too 'fragile' for reliable use. There are better alternatives. 3. Thanks for writing, Dawn. I too believe that Outlook Express has something to do with the issue. A friend of mine in South Africa, who also despises Outlook Express, sent me another mail program to use, but I couldn't get MS to let me use it as my default mail server. So, obviously, that didn't help matters much. Of course I may simply have not know what I was doing, which pretty much my excuse for getting married the fifth time. 3. Hi, Harvey-- Thanks for writing. I appreciate your comments. Several times during these freezes I have allowed my computer to sit in this "frozen" state for as long as thirty minutes. Nothing ever happens. I mean it just sits there in some sort of catatonic state until I shut it down. It's a really strange situation. Personally, I think Outlook Express has something to do with it. 3. Walt, I must say your personality towards your situation is amusing. It does get frustrating at times. With so many programs, one has to play pick and choose to find the actual problem. Recently our computer crashed bigtime. We lost all our information. Thank goodness we had burned my tree! I really don't know what caused the actual problem but, outlook express did have problems while running with other programs. We use chat programs so I may talk with my family in the US. Of course we use internet explorer. There are many other program we run at the same time. It was only when using outlook express together with other programs that our computer would freeze up. I believe it had something to do with the configuration in the actual program. Since everything was completely deleted from our computer, we had to start from scratch. There are no problems now. I do not suggest starting all over. Possibly reconfiguring outlook express would solve the problem. There are fixes for outlook express as well. This may or may not be the problem. This is only my personal experience. I will include a link to outlook express, if you'd like to try it out. Dawn http://officeupdate.microsoft.com/welcome/outlook.asp Hope this helps.

Maybe others with slow loading photos should > try downloading these updates. I would be surprised if CFT uses DirectX libraries. First because the development tools for DirectX are certainly not free (hey, this is *Microsoft* product...:-)), and also because this is absolutely unuseful except for making bloatware. So, I don't think that patching and re-patchging the operating system will make it faster for photos loading. You will only increase your chances of getting the system unstable...as usual when some patch originating from Redmond, WA goes on your hard disk...:-) But (for the original contributor) you're on your own... Try to patch, patch and re-patch....and cross your fingers at each reboot, of course!

    3. Walt, when a system freezes up so that even the mouse pointer won't move, and a CTRL-ALT-DEL won't work, 99.9% of the time it is a problem with a driver for the graphics card. You might try checking on the web site for the maker of your video card and see if there is a later driver. 3. I use McAfee v5.15 and keep it updated daily. When I installed 3.06 there were no viruses. I just ran McAfee on EVERY file on my system (over 13 Gb of files) and it detected no infections. Would the person who wrote the original message about CFTW carrying a virus please notify this List what your AV program called the "virus". I had to identify it for you. You say you "downloaded CFT-Win...from a computer in my office". Did you download it from the web TO the computer in your office? Or did you download it at home FROM the computer in your office? How do you know it had already "infected some files"? What were those files? Were they files that came with CFTW? Some AV programs, Norton and McAfee included, did give "false positives" for certain Windows files. McAfee fixed their program but I don't know if Norton did or not. Please, when sending this type of email, especially when it is alarming to so many, give all the pertinent details. Nothing can be checked if you are vague. Since many of us have down loaded and installed 3.06 with no problems and with our AV programs NOT detecting anything, and since it seems to be peculiar to your system, I really doubt that the downloaded file was infected. We need to know more in order to dig into it. Thanks, George W. 3. Hi Walter I'm sorry to hear that you are still having problems. Here are some ideas to try and information that you should supply in order for us to try to track down your problem. 1) When it crashes, please give details of what happens. E.G. Is it a GPF and exactly what is the error message and in which module did it occur. How often does it happen? Is it always at the same place? Does it always crash in the same way? 2) Your Pentium 200MMX should be fine. Can you tell us which chipset your motherboard uses, so that I can advise which chipset drivers to use. Harvey is right, Windows 95 may not be detecting the chipset correctly. However, I never load the "special" DMA drivers as they are very often problematic. 3) Exactly what version of Windows 95 are you using. Then I can advise which patches to load. Go "Start/Settings/Control Panel", open "System" and look for the version number on the "General" page. This can sometimes be misleading, so if you look in your Windows folder, sort by date and see which date appears most. This might sound a bit cryptic but you will see immediately when you look at the dates. Choose from 07/11/95, 12/31/95, 08/24/96, 05/01/97 or 11/26/97. 4) Since you are blind, are you perhaps using some of the "Accessibility Options"? Is it possible to temporarily disable these and see if it makes any difference. 5) Upgrade to Version 2.51x. This you can do for free. You might as well be using the last 2.x version. 6) Better still, as Ian suggested, try out version 3.06 for free for 45 days. There are many "must have" features. Then you can upgrade for just $20, a much better option than purchasing another package. I have also never had V3 crash on me, and I have run it on various operating systems from the original Window 95 (07/11/95- build 950), Windows 98 (SP1) and Windows NT 4.0 (SP3 & SP5) - never a problem. 7) Item 6 will probably make items 1 - 5 unnecessary! Keep me informed. John Smith South Africa

    3. Check that you only have HIGH colour and not true colour Run Scandisk from inside windows You can easily do that from explorer by selecting propertys of C and then the second tab, tools (I think its called that in english) the run a "simple" and repair all errors. After that do a defrag which may take some time. Check what other programs are started behind the scene with the program msconfig START RUN msconfig <ENTER> Check the tab autostart for strange things ... Check that you have windows handeling your virtual memory This computer, propertys The rightmost tab Virtaul memory Should be handled by windows BTW I hopy you have windows 95 OSR2 as that version contain some fixes ... Better might be to go to win98 SE, Windows ME wouldnt be to good with only 48MB There are some really strange things that may happen in windows 95 that are fixed in 98! Some tips & trix that may work, at least this is what I would do as a starter. /Mats in Sweden > -----Ursprungligt meddelande----- > Från: walterboswell1 [mailto:[email protected]] > Skickat: den 10 mars 2001 00:34 > Till: [email protected] > Ämne: Re: [CFTW] CFTW is the Best > > > Hi, All. 1. [CFTW] A Lot of Thank Yous and A Few Responses
    2. walterboswell1
    3. Hi, All-- First of all, I want to thank all you good folks for your suggestions concerning my problem with CFTW. Perhaps I should also try to answer a few of your questions. That might help you help me. At least I hope so. 1. First of all, I know computers about as well as I know Cindy Crawford (i.e., in the Biblical sense), which is to say, not at all. Before I lost my central vision, I was a college English teacher and musician. The closest I had ever come to a computer in my entire life happened one day in Sears and Roebuck when I got off the elevator on the wrong floor. So: one might say that computers have become somewhat of an overnight necessity for me. Without them, I would be totally unable to read and write. Of course, in the last few years, I have come a long way [baby], if I do say so myself--i.e., I have come all the way from an innocent neophyte to a very dangerous semi-literate bungler. (I tell you this just in case any of you are given to fits of pique when dealing with a raw amateur.) But, be that as it may, let me continue with my responses (such as they are) to your questions. 2. I always run defrag and scandisk at least once a week, whether my wife needs it or not; 3. Today, I downloaded a huge Windows 95 upgrade--the download took 43 minutes to complete. I hope it helps but, for all I know, I might simply have been downloading Pittsburg. 4. Of my 2.98 GB hard drive, 1.91 GB is still available. 4. At START UP my system is usually 90% free. The following programs are running: MSN Internet Access (Quick View); Explorer; Loadwc; Msmsgs; Systray; and Navapw32. (Compaq also has some kind of thing called WATCHDOG. I usually END TASK and get it out, but it always comes back. Just like Bill Clinton, it never goes away entirely.) 5. When my computer crashes, I don't get an error message--at least not that I am aware of. The computer simply freezes. Nothing works except the pointer. The only way to get out of the freeze is to shut the computer down with the power switch. Ctrl + Alt + Del has no effect whatsoever. 6. As I mentioned before, most of these freezes occur when I have both CFTW and Outlook Express running simultaneously, but not always. On the other hand, I really can't remember at any time my computer freezing in the same way it does when CFTW is running. Usually, whenever a freeze does occur without CFTW, which is almost never, the ctrl + alt + del will get it going again. 7. As best I can determine, my Windows 95 version is 4.00.950b; the IE is a recent download. It is 5.5.50.4134.0600. [There are so many dates in Windows, Ira, I can't really determine the most reoccurring one.] 8. I don't really use the Accessibility Options. I simply use white text against a very dark blue background, large fonts and, when I need it, Zoom Text, a screen enlargement program. I rarely run Zoom Text, however, when simply reading text. I use it primarily for hard-to-see attachments, files, pictures, naked girls, etc.. 9. I think I have already downloaded the 2.51x upgrade. And I will certainly consider the 3.05 version. Let's see how it goes. 10. And finally, I ordered a CD from Compaq which boasts a few "fixes" for very weary 4508 Presario owners. Perhaps it will do some good. Okay, so I hope some of these hopeless literary cripples (i.e., my answers) help you good folks decipher the reason for my computer and/or mental breakdowns. As always, I am open to any suggestions. Can anyone else verify this? I don't think my software is carrying a virus, but if it is, I really want to know. Do any of you have some good virus checkers that can verify if this is true?

    3. Ian, I run win3.11 with v2.?? on a 486 and win95 v3.05 on a 590, the two computers are networked. The win 3.11 unit is more stable and sometimes just as fast as the win95 unit, and no one bothers to write virus for win 3.1 Mike At 16:04 10/03/01 +1300, you wrote:.
