    3. I tested 2.50x and 2.51x and I, too, found that the Source for the Edit Individual window can not be deleted, whereas it's OK in 3.07. If I may be permitted a question on v.2, what were the enhancements in 2.51x over 2.50x? This is not shown in the documentation. I remember that the CFTW prices were changed, but what of substance? I ask because I see that the files are quite different internally. 2.50x contains a series of c4....dll's and in 2.51x these are c5...dll's. 2.50x contains a series of cw2...32.dll's and cwfault..dll's, whereas in 2.51x these have been replaced entirely with mfc40.dll, mfcand32.dll, msvert20.dll, msvert40.dll, and oc30.dll. I am not asking for an explanation of these files, just the enhancements they made. The reason I ask is simply to gauge which to use (in conjuction with v.3)--right now I have all three on my desktop! JM

While most new users had only 2 // some at a slightly lower level had > 3 / -> /// does this signify anything? Names should be entered exactly as they would appear in normal writing of a person's full name. The slashes // delimit the surname, which the program then parses and thus allows for searches or lists sorted by surname. Thus proper entries: Ira Johan /Lund/ Robbert /van de Groot/ Roberta /Jimenez/ Valdez/ A "pair" of slashes normally delimit a surname. Three slashes can be used to for Spanish/ Portuguese names that have multiple surnames (a father surname and a mother surname). Mor int he manual on this. Small names - like "van" and "de", although part of the surname can be excluded using Exempt Surnames (Option Menu - Database Configuration). By excluded, I mean that int he example above "Groot' is what gets sorted on - not "van". Commas, or anything else becomes part of the name: William Jordan /Smith,/ Jr. Will show up on the main screen as: William Jordan Smith, Jr. And get sorted as: Smith, William Jordan, Jr. >5. When typing a new person, there is no alert or mentioning to already > existing individuals. My mom didn't realize that after 70 entries, > about 20 of them were duplicates. Minimising windows in >other programs does not cause the program to 'lock up' like CFT so I don't >think it's my computer. Can anyone explain this? No faulty program. That's the way it is. An understanding of the "types" of windows in Windows might help. There are basically 3 types of windows: 1. An "application" window 2. A "document" window (either MDI or SDI) 3. A "dialog" window The application window is the main window - think of it is that large one that surrounds any program. Many applications then allow you to open one or more "documents" within the application window. In MS-Word for example you can open more than one document. This is called an MDI application (multiple document interface). A program like CFT-Win which only allows the opening of "one" document (or database) is called an SDI (single document interface). Most other windows are considered "dialog" windows. For example, in MS-Word you click on Tools Menu - Options and it opens a dialog. Thus a dialog window is NOT a child MDI window - meaning that you cannot switch to another document when you are in a dialog window. You normally can't do a thing until you close that dialog window. In CFT-Win I have broken some standard rules. In most applications a "dialog' window will NOT have a minimize and maximize button. In fact - most will not allow you to resize the window. But I wanted to allow you to resize the Edit Individual and Edit Event windows (which are really dialog windows). In fact, I wanted to allow you to maximize these windows to fill the monitor since on a smaller monitor with the lowest screen resolution you won't see much if you can't maximize it. CFT-Win is also a Database program - more comparable to say MS-Access than it would be to MS-Word. In MS-Word you can open multiple documents and switch between them. In MS-Access you can really only open one database - although it does allow you to open multiple copies of the program. MS-Access allows you to also openmore than one view into a database - thus creating the MDI interface. You basically open various tables and on the Window Menu switch between them. CFT-Win is an SDI program - single database and even single view into the database. In the very early stages of veta 3 I messed with MDI and never could get it working smoothly. CFT-Win is NOT comparable to MS-Access in that it really is more complicated than MS-Access - in the way it actually is updating multiple internal tables when you edit a person or event. So thus, I did away with the complexities of any type of MDI interface. Probably rambled on more than necessary - but the answer is that the program is working the way I wrote it to work. Checking in the Help About I found that the version I have is: 32-Bit Version 3.06x for Windows 95/98/2000/NT I downloaded the Upgrade patch and unzipped 3 files into the CFTW3 subdirectory. When I ran the CFT program, I was prompted for a language selection, which I left it as is... and nothing happened. I mean no upgrade to 3.07. That is very evident when comparing the Manual pdf file which contains screen snap-shots of the Edit Individual - where I don't see the Normal Surname textbox. Also how do you print the skelleton of decendants/ancestors? I don't want the whole list with details. Just the same identical line connected (with plus or minuts if we want to expand) from the Decendants or Ancestors tabs. Thanks -Alon.

    3. Like most win95 programs CFT uses 'windows within windows' for example in the Edit Individual screen, clicking on an event line opens another window as I would expect. In the upper right corner of the windows are the usual three 'buttons': min, max and close. The close button seems to have the same function as the close symbol at the far left of the tool bar, are they different? The maximum button works as expected and the minimize button places a bar at the bottom of the screen as expected. However if a window is minimized, clicking anywhere on the screen just causes the machine to beep with every mouse click; the program seems to 'lock up' Have I downloaded a faulty copy of the CFT program? Minimising windows in other programs does not cause the program to 'lock up' like CFT so I don't think it's my computer. Can anyone explain this? Mike

    2. Alon using Cumberland Family Tree
    3. Hello all, I'm new to this list so please pardon if these issues have been raised before. Comparing the CFT to the UFT (Ultimate Family Tree) I find it to be far superior and a heck more intuitive. I let my mom (who is not the most computer literate person) to do the data gathering and entry. Issues that came while she was using it: 1. Each user that was created had // at the beginning of the name. What is the meaning of those // symbols? 2. What is the format that the software expects you to enter the name? i.e., Last, First, MI. or First Last etc... 3. What are the delimiters between the name parts commas, semicolun, '/'? 4. While most new users had only 2 // some at a slightly lower level had 3 / -> /// does this signify anything? 5. When typing a new person, there is no alert or mentioning to already existing individuals. My mom didn't realize that after 70 entries, about 20 of them were duplicates. It would be great if there were either alert msg to the user that an individual with identical name already exists, OR while you type the new individual, there would be an auto-fill that would be populated by each charachter. In the latter solution, you could see immediatly if an individual has been entered previously and use them instantly. 6. When viewing the list of Names, a 'sort-by' could come handy - by clicking on the headers - to allow instant ascending/decending by that column (e.g., Name, First, last, IRN number, Date of birth etc.) 7. How do you print a Decendants Tree - skeleton of names the way it appears in the Decendants tab? It doesn't show in the Reports. That's all, thanks for your help, -Alon [email protected]

    1. [CFTW] Archives are Working Again! (NEW INSTRUCTIONS) (Very Long)
    2. LISTOWNER
    3. The List Archives are now working!!!!! HOORAH, HOORAH!!!!! For those who have been waiting to access them in order to search for things, this should be welcome news. HOW TO USE THE ARCHIVES: There are two types of Archives access: 1) SEARCH the Archives for specific messages by searching for names, words, etc. Use this URL and substitute the name of the List for XXXXX: http://listsearches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl?list=XXXXX (In other words, you would replace XXXXX with SMITH to search the SMITH Mailing List for something. In this SEARCH you MUST type the name in ALL CAPS. Another example would be to replace XXXXX with EUDORA-MAIL, VIRUS-DISCUSSION, or WINDOWS- FOR DUMMIES, etc.) Once at the appropriate page, you would type in the word or words, and select the year to search. Some Lists have been in existence since 1996, while others are relatively new, starting in 2000 or 2001. 2) BROWSE the Archives to go from message to message, month by month, year by year: Use this URL and substitute the name of the List for xxxxx: http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/index/xxxxx (Replace xxxxx with the appropriate surname, e.g. smith. In this search, you MUST type the name in non-caps. Again, for non- surname Lists, examples would be eudora-mail, virus-discussion, or windows-for-dummies, etc.) On this page, you can choose to see all List email "threaded" or in "chronological" order. You will see a list by month and year, from the first month the List was active, to the present month. EXTREMELY IMPORTANT !!!!! If you do a BROWSE, you cannot search for a word or words; what you will see will be all the emails for a specific month/year, either arranged by date, or by "thread", with the only identifier being the SUBJECT line. This is why it is VERY, VERY IMPORTANT that when you post an email to a List, or reply to an email, you MAKE SURE your subject line is descriptive of what you are sending. These BROWSE pages give lists of emails by SUBJECT LINES !!!!! Thus, if you are subscribed to the -D (Digest mode) List, and you reply to an email contained within the Digest and DON'T change the subject line, it will look something like this: Re: GERMANNA_COLONIES-D Digest V01 #104 So, your reply gets Archived with THAT subject line. What does that tell searchers when they are using the BROWSE utility? Absolutely NOTHING!!!!! In short, if you're a -D (Digest mode) subscriber, CHANGE THE SUBJECT LINE to match that of the email within the Digest before replying. Please!!!!! A word about using the SEARCH feature. You will have to experiment to find out how to best word your queries. Unfortunately, the search engine at Rootsweb is not a true "boolean" utility. You cannot search for a phrase. For instance, if you do a search for "germans in virginia", you will get "hits" on all emails that contain all three of those words, but not necessarily all together in a phrase. Regards, SgtGeorge George W. Durman Knoxville, TN Listowner
