    2. David Cushing
    3. Hello Everyone: I thought I would take this quiet time to refer back to Ver 2.5, remember those old days before everyone started talking about ver 3.xx. I have been watching the advance of the program but have stayed with the tried and true and plugging along and have reached a database of over 66,000 people. I would like to ask Ira if I can view a list of the MRN's and how? David Cushing, Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, Canada

    3. Thanks Ira, I remember we touched on this subject some time ago. I was interested to see if others had this problem before I suggested that you spend your valuable time on a program modification. Any time I merge files I 'loose' valuable middle name information and sometimes important surname variations from the 2nd db. My db contains mostly FrCdn families - some stayed in Canada, some migrated to the US, some returned to Quebec or other parts of Canada. You would be amazed at the variations in names and spelling of names in a culture where it was common to have three or four given names, and then there are the variations in surname which shift from one generation to the next and sometimes inconsistantly among siblings. The underlying rule in all my research is to never throw a datum away unless I'm sure it's an error. For me those name variations are extremely valuable data, without them I couldn't link relationships through time. I was hoping that someone might have an easier way around this instead of cutting and pasting off the bottom of the log file. Perhaps most of the listmembers are working with more static cultures where name variations are rare. Those of us with immigrant blood don't have it so easy :) Mike Whitehorse YT At 07:38 07/05/01 -0500, you wrote: >At 05:38 AM 5/7/01 +0000, you wrote: >>Does anyone else have a problem when merging databases that the program >>strips off the names in the 2nd database. 3. Does anyone else have a problem when merging databases that the program strips off the names in the 2nd database. I'm merging databases from distant cousins, and valuable variations in name get 'lost' to the log file. The 2nd db names are at the end of all the individuals in the log file and have to be retrieved by cut and paste... somewhat tedious. Why can't the program bring the 2nd db name over as a NALT event rather than sticking it in the bottom of the log file? 1. [CFTW] What happens?
    2. Henry Einholm
    3. George, I have been a subscriber to the [CFTW]-list for some years. I received during this period plenty of interesting mail and all worked well until last month. During the period April 9 to April 26 I did not receive a single [CFTW]-letter (which was surprising, as this is not generally the case). April 23 I again subscribed to the address [email protected] as I supposed something had happened and cut me off from the list. As a result (?) I received a few letters April 26 and April 27. From this date again complete silence until May 2 when your [CFTW]-mail about virus appeared. So my question is have I lost the connection to the list - I receive an increasing amount of Spam - or have people just stopped writing? 3. Folks, you're going to hear this from me quite often from now on. I've decided that the only way to stop users from getting infections on their systems (viruses, worms, trojans) is to constantly warn everyone not to open attachments. So here it is: DO NOT, REPEAT, DO NOT, OPEN ATTACHMENTS TO EMAILS!!!!! (Until you follow the instructions below.) The latest trend in infections is to make the attached files look like they came from a trusted user. Plus, the (*$#&($#* virus/worm/trojan writers are making the infected emails look like they are replies to previously posted emails on Mailing Lists. NEVER, open an attachment, even if you have an Anti-Virus (AV) program installed, and think you have it configured properly, until you perform the following security steps: BEFORE, you open an attachment, update your AV program with the latest virus definition files (DAT files). Then, MANUALLY, run the AV program on the attached file(s). If the attachment is an executable file, e.g., .EXE, .BAT, .COM, .PIF, .SCR, .VB, .VBE, .VBS, etc., DO NOT RUN IT. If it is a document type file, e.g., .DOC, .TXT, etc., view it in a text reader, such as NotePad. Make sure it IS only a text file. DO NOT OPEN EMAIL ATTACHED FILES !!!!! If you're not a "pro" at this virus-thing, it's better to delete an unknown file than to infect your system. 1. [CFTW] DON'T open that attachment!!!
    2. Sheila
    3. In a tech newsletter, I got the following info on that virus: Ed Bott The Wizard of IZ Alarm bells have been going off at the antivirus companies. McAfee discovered a nasty new Internet worm "in the wild" on April 11, 2001 and traced its origin to New Zealand. They officially dubbed it W32/[email protected] Tell me more Symantec's Antivirus Research Center uncovered the new virus on the same day and decided to call it [email protected] Tell me more. F-Secure spotted the worm on its radar a day later and added it to their rogue's gallery as simply BadTrans. Tell me more.. Whatever you call it, this new email virus is a bad boy, with a password-stealing Trojan routine that could potentially cause a surprising amount of damage. Today I'll tell you how bad it is, how to protect yourself and all about Microsoft's big plans to eradicate this type of virus altogether. IT'S BAD, IT'S NATIONWIDE Since its discovery two weeks ago, I've seen a sharp increase each day in the number of BadTrans reports. Here's what you need to know: How do I spot BadTrans? The BadTrans worm works by replying to email messages. When you send email to a machine infected with BadTrans, the virus replies with your original message and an attached file, plus the single line "Take a look to the attachment." The message appears to come from someone you know. The attachment may have any of 16 randomly chosen filenames (Pics.ZIP.scr or YOU_are_FAT!.TXT.pif, for example) with a final extension of .pif or .scr. How do I protect myself? For starters, don't double-click on the attachment. If you receive a message that includes a suspicious attachment, delete it and contact the person who sent it to you (by phone, preferably). Make sure your antivirus software is up-to-date. Tell me more. How do I get rid of it? Current versions of every leading antivirus program easily detect and remove the BadTrans virus. A POSSIBLE CURE? Critics have hammered Microsoft for years, complaining that its software is too vulnerable to viruses. All that changed a few months ago when Microsoft released Service Pack 2 for Office 2000. More changes are in store when Office XP hits the streets on May 31. How it will work: If you've installed the Outlook 2000 Email Security Update or upgraded to Outlook 2002, you're completely protected from BadTrans and other attachment-borne viruses. Unfortunately, this "protection" also blocks some legitimate file attachments. The new Outlook versions scan every incoming message for attachments. The security patch for Outlook 2000 completely hides any file whose extension appears on Microsoft's "Level 1" list of potential viruses. Tell me more. Outlook 2002 is more informative: You see an error message that includes the full name of the file and a note that Outlook blocked access to it. Roy Johnson

The dates are printed only one inch form the right margin, >and therefore they are truncated no matter which font size I choose. I have >tried both A4 and letter page sizes. Not really a bug - more of a feature limitation. Let me explain. Even though you have a number of fields to select from, the page is not wide enough to always accomodate them. Date fields are formatted narrower than place fields. So if a person selected 5 date fields they would fit on the page. But if a person selected a place name or two, then as the column widths are widened to accomodate these fields, it may push some off the right edge of the page - and I think you are right that about 1 inch margin is what it is set at. I know some of this could be fixed by allowing more options for the user to adjust field widths, but that's more features I'll have to add, more complications for programmer and user, too. But for now the widths are fixed depending on the fields chosen. So if the truncated data is more important, you'll have to remove some fields to the left. It's a trade off, there. 1. [CFTW] Finding Non-Genealogy Lists at Rootsweb
    2. George W. Durman
    3. In answer to several subscribers, who wanted to know how to find out what non-genealogy Lists are available at Rootsweb, here is how it's done: The Lists ARE still active. It's just that they are almost impossible to find now using the options from the Home Page at Rootsweb. Here's how to find non-genealogy Lists: 1) Log on to the Rootsweb Home Page at: http:.//www.rootsweb.com; 2) About half way down the page, you will see "Mailing Lists"; 3) Click "Index (Browse All Lists)"; 4) The next page will give you access to ALL Mailing Lists at Rootsweb; but, don't expect it to be easy to navigate. I, and several other Listowners, have had words with Rootsweb personnel about the difficulty of finding non-genealogy Lists (or Community Lists as Rootsweb likes to call them). 5) Way down the page, you will see a section, "OTHER"; in that section, click on "Internet Help". That will take you to a page where you will be able to click access Lists that deal with Computers, Web-Browsers, Email Programs, Virus Problems and Programs, Graphics Programs, Windows, LINUX, Scanners, IRC, FTP, Hoaxes, etc. In my opinion, this "catchall" section for "Internet Help" is very poorly named. All the above subjects do NOT fall into the category of "Internet Help". 6) Next, if you want to find Computer Genealogy Programs, you have to go back to "Other" and click on "Software". This gets you a page for accessing Genealogy Programs, with a couple of other things thrown in as well. 7) Back at the "Other" category, if you click on "Miscellaneous", you will get a page that is truly a concoction of miscellaneous subjects. Many of the Lists here would well fit into more narrow, well-defined Lists. 8) If you want to find other Lists on such things as "Basket Weaving", "Quilt Sewing", "Barrel Racing", etc., you are a lot smarter than me if you can find them easily and quickly. I manage a List for my daughter called "Barrel Racing". I defy anyone to find it from the instructions I have give above !!!!! 9) To find "Barrel Racing", you have to access "Community" Lists here: http://communities.rootsweb.com/ And then navigate to the various categories, in this case "Sports". I can't find anything at Rootsweb that tells a user, old or new, how to get to the Community List Index. You certainly can't do it from the normal Lists Index !!!!! And, once there, you will find absolutely no correlation between what is found on the Community Index and the normal List Index, although there is a lot of overlapping. In short, someone at Rootsweb had made the decision on how the web pages should look, "where, when, and if" non- genealogy Lists are indexed, and the general layout of the web site. I can tell you right now that, over the past 6 months or so, I have heard from many, many Rootsweb users about the lack of intuitiveness and functionality of clickable links. There isn't even a search capability on any page THAT I HAVE FOUND that allows one to search for non-genealogy Lists, e.g. "Houseplants". This List DOES exist, but I put a challenge to you: try to FIND that List by normal searching from the main Rootsweb home page, or any of its links. And, what is available once you get to "Communities" is NOT a place to click and see a page on this subject; all you see is a list of places you can go to read short descriptions about various Communities and subscribe to the Lists. To sum it all up, there is NO place to click and search Rootsweb for anything other than SURNAMES !!!!! And, if you want to search the Archives for a List such as "Houseplants", you have to know the EXACT name of the List first. I know that the folks at Rootsweb think there are more important things to worry about than the non-genealogy Lists, but it seems they should put in SOME time on making them easily accessible. It is very difficult to search for Lists that are not SURNAME Lists. Very, very poor formatting. SgtGeorge George W. Durman

    3. CFTW ver. 3.07: I would like to print a Standard Individual List very much like the list in v. 2.51. Purpose # 1: I have organised my paper archive based on IRN's and I would like to print an index to the archive. The Index should be sorted on Surname and include IRN, birth and death dates and places. The name should be printed with surname first and then given name. Each person must be printed on one line. Purpose # 2: The Standard Individual List from v 2.51 vas very efficient in finding duplicates. I have often 10 or more persons with the same name. Therefore I have disabled the duplicate checking. For duplicate finding it is necessary to have birth date, birthplace, death date, death place listed I columns. Comparing v. 2.51 and 3.07: v 2.51 v 3.07 One person one line Yes each event prints one 1-3 lines Print surname first yes always prints given name first, even if sorted on surname I am aware of the CSV export facility, but I can't make I substitute baptism for birth and burial for death. My current solution to the problem is to do a GEDCOM export and import it into CFTW v. 2.51. And now to the bug: If I print the Standard Information (v. 3.07) selecting the special event and full dates. The dates are printed only one inch form the right margin, and therefore they are truncated no matter which font size I choose. I have tried both A4 and letter page sizes. Søren Henning Dalgaard
