    3. Ira Sorry to persist with this .. maybe someone else has some ideas. I have the program on a laptop and the edit function is fine but not on my pc, which would suggest it is not a Cumberland prob. I was also having a problem with the icon names in Cumberland being cut off but have solved that by changing the font size on windows .. but the edit function is still a problem .. it gets to the end of the first line and makes the alarm bell noise. Even with long names it only displays the first line and then the cursor disappears !.. I have re-installed, rebuilt etc .. no joy .. I do not know if it is related but only half the ancestral tree shows up in the 6 generation section. Could be something to do with font size ?? It is not major .. just annoying .... would appreciate any ideas. Many thanks Hugo | >| In the "Place" Editor .. if the place name is more than 51 spaces long ie. | >| the width of the box, it stops. 1. [CFTW] Database restructuring
    2. Hugo Slater
    3. Hi there Ira Had a thought the other day when I was doing a rebuild of my database. There is a tck box there that says re-order the events in date order .. which is fine. But when you do not have a marriage date, say, it then sends this to the bottom of the data on that person. Would it be possible to either have as an alternate or instead "Restructue in standard event order"? This way you could set up your standard events in the order you would like and Birth would come before Baptisms, Marriage before Death ( though for some it may be the same event !) etc ... So when you did a restructure all your events would be in a logical order. Just a thought Many thanks Hugo Slater

At the time I thought it was a good idea and so I placed hte fields there - and that was as far as I got. So many other more fundamental things for a genealogy program came up - bugs and reports and other more pressing features that I have never gotten any further on ideas or plans for these fields. Currently there are not even any reports that will print thiese out - or even the place notes. So for now all they are are little references to help one when viewing the places int he Note Editor. 3. Ira, I guess I'm one of the few who truly appreciates the awsome beauty of what you've written. I find that the internet allows me to network and find many research cousins. A small gedfile is usually the easiest way to update each other's data. Selection lists are great!! I'm using the program to trace and document the ancestory of about six families who lived in the same region of Québec and migrated to Minnesota at about the same time. My database is approaching 7000, about 10% are direct ancestors. I think I know the answer, but is there a way to print that wonderful concise summary table that the relationship calculator produces? I tried to print it :( , and cutting and pasting is like trying to nail jelly to a tree. I ultimately used the relationship calculator in the report section, exported it as a text file, then edited out the many pages of redundent information to produce a concise report summarizing relationships between cousins. I've shared these concise reports with cousins who find them informative, and very helpful in visualizing our common genweb, especially when you're cousins at 12 different levels. 3. It's common in here in Canada too, it's called "common law" marriage I believe, it happens automatically after seven years of continuous cohabitation. The tradition is so old among the indigens that almost all tribes were matrilineal. Who knew or cared who their father was/wasn't? A person was from their mother's clan, here Wolf or Raven. Children lived in their mother's house. Men moved into the house of their wife's mother. The eldest daughter inhereted the clan house, and so on. Very practical in a mobile trading culture. Another long standing tradition is that Wolf marries Raven or vs; marrying into the same clan is still 'frowned upon' by the elders. 3. Amy, yes there are infections that are carried in .doc files, and, when opened in MS Word, can spread to all other .doc files on your system. It doesn't destroy operating software, but can render all your .doc files unusable. The best way to conquer infections that put bad Macros in .doc files is to have, and use, an Anti-Virus program, have it configured properly to check all downloaded files, and to keep its virus definition files updated at least twice weekly. It's also not a bad idea to run a scan on the complete system periodically, say at least weekly. Like you, whenever I receive a .doc file, and I get them all the time, I first run McAfee Scan over the file, even thought it was checked at downloading. Can't be too careful.
