    3. After you have explained that the program files are NOT infected with any virus, worm, trojan, etc., and after you have explained that some Anti-Virus (AV) programs give "false positives", and then he still insists, all you can do is ignore him. There IS one slight possibility that one or more files in the CFTW directory/folder have been infected by a virus from another source. But, that does not mean that CFT was/is infected. Some of the more arcane viruses infect files with specific extensions, e.g., .exe, .dat, .gif, .jpg, .dbf, etc. If he received one of those infections, a file in the CFTW program may have been infected ON HIS HARD DRIVE. But that doesn't mean CFTW itself is the culprit. All you can do at this point is tell him that CFTW has been checked out by hundreds of people, that hundreds of users have checked out their systems, and that CFTW is NOT infected, and since he is convinced it IS infected, he should probably just uninstall it from his system. Just a thought. I seem to recall that you (we) are all told to shut down anti-virus applications before installing new software or you may get virus warning messages. 3. I think there is very little chance that there is a virus in the downloaded CFTW, bearing in mind many different anti-Virus programms (including mine) are not reporting a problem. Therefore, perhaps, here is a case of a false alarm, to which most virus checkers are susceptible at some time or other and there is therefore nothing to worry about (not even about the virus checker, which after all is erring on the safe side!!!). 3. Ira, FWIW, I downloaded and purchased CFT-Win in June and had no report of a virus. I run NAV, and keep my definitions current. I would ask the person for the following information: * name of the file downloaded * where it was downloaded from * the date/time stamp on the file, and * the file size * The virus that DR Solomon is reporting. You can at least compare this to ensure that you're looking at the same .exe file. You could also offer to have the person send you a copy of the file so that you can inspect it yourself. Beyond that, I'm not sure there's much else you can do to convince the person that the file is clean. As an aside, I see in the Help/About that I'm running version "3.06x" even though I've installed 3.07. Is this just a mistake in the About dialog? I also pulled down and ran the upgrade, just to be sure. 3. I have been using cft since 1998, cft-win 3, simultaneously with the most current version of Norton anti virus (now currently with 2001). I always upgrade my definitions on a weekly basis and run regular scans. I have NEVER had a virus warning from any download from cft, or any cft product! Although, I have had Email warnings of viruses from unrelated sources, I have always taken the suggested warnings from Norton and have always enjoyed a virus free computer. I have the utmost confidence in (1) Norton Anti virus and (2) cft.software. I have downloaded and installed Ver 3.07 but when I click on Help/About Cumberland Family Tree it says it is Ver 3.06. I seem to remember that this came up once before. 2. I have SOPHUS running networked on a large business system, quite often following an upgrade the virus checker will point to a file that has resided happily on disc for years (especially .exe) I had never had this response against cft. 1. For What It's Worth -- RE: [CFTW] CFT-Win Virus?
    2. Russ Whaley
    3. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 This may not change this person's mind, but here goes... I have been using CFT-Win since 1996 or 1997, and most of the time have downloaded the software from the net. I have never once gotten a virus-infected copy -- Norton Antivirus would have told me, as I keep it up to date. The few viruses I *have* had to deal with came from other sources. While (of course) this doesn't mean that some person with less-than-honorable intent could somehow cause a problem in the future, I would say that the witness of past history should be worth something. Perhaps you need to check the settings on your Dr. Solomon software -- many antivirus packages automatically brand certain disk writes as "virus activity" when it can't readily identify the source. Even the most intuitive software is really only as smart as the person operating it... I know that sometimes, less-than-complete knowledge on my part has made it appear that there was something horribly wrong when there wasn't a problem, just a setting that needed to be changed. My two cents worth.
