Posted on: Yuba County, California Query Forum Reply Here: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ca/Yuba/415 Surname: DANDER ------------------------- Hi According to CALIFORNIA PLACE NAMES, Gudde, UC Press, 1949: "Timbuctoo [Yuba]. Historic Landmark 320 preserves the name of the prosperous mining town of the 1850's. It is not certain whether a Negro miner dubbed "Timbuctoo", or the popular song ("for he was a man from Timbuctoo") inspired the name. According to Drury (p.497), the first white miners "found a blackamoor busy with pick and pan, smiling a golden smile, and their ready fancy fixed on Timbuctoo as the name for the new camp." Referral to Drury is to pub CALIFORNIA: AN INTIMATE GUIDE, Aubrey Drury, NY, Harpers, 1939. A list of CA historical markers can be found at: http://www.calandmarks.com Many have been visited and photographed by site developer; unfortunately it appears this one was visited but not photographed. He may have more info. This is all I have. Hope it is of some use. Vern D
