Posted on: Yuba County, California Query Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ca/Yuba/10489 Surname: ENOS ------------------------- I am looking for the grave of my G-G-Grandfather, Joseph H. ENOS. (1817-1850/51) Around 1849/50 Joseph got the "gold fever" of the times and traveled with 7 other men of the Bainbridge, Michigan area to California searching for gold. Unfortunately he died there a year later (1850/51). According to a 1930 Family History written by Olive Harwood Lash (St. Joe, MI): Joseph ENOS "went to California in the gold rush of 1849 in company with John Morgan and others, and died out there." I have just recently found, a letter dated Jan 5, 1851. There was no envelope but it has written on the top "St. Joseph bar North Yuba". It was written by Henry Kingsbey to his brother here in Bainbridge, MI. It states "I am stopping on the St. Joseph bar" so I thought it might be a sand bar rather than a pub since he says "on" not "in"? He states "Joseph Enos is dead. He was sick six weeks. We done all we could for him. It took one of us to tend on him most of the time he was sick." He does not state anything further about Joseph Enos but it is a very interesting 4 page letter. Could you tell me if there was a North Yuba town? I found Yuba and South Yuba but no North Yuba. I also see there is a river named Yuba, is/was there a St Joseph bar along it? I have tried to zero in on an area where he might be buried and have looked for death records and cemeteries online but have found nothing. I would greatly appreciate any help you can give me.
