Sutter Co. births start about 1872. Even though Yuba Co. births started being recorded in 1850 - often the early records are not as well kept. Your best bets are to look in newspapers for the time. It is tiring work - but sometimes you hit gold. Try the Sutter Co. Library - they have a nice card index to old local newspapers (if I am not remembering the right library - someone else can correct me if I am mistaken). You might also try church records if you can find out what church he belonged to (if it was a church that believed in child baptism). Also, Check the deeds for Sutter and Yuba counties looking for a Garrett in the 1860s time frame. [As for census records - I have done entire surname searches for an ancester for the 1830-1860 census in AL, and still have not found the home for one of my ancestors! - You might have to check all of the Garretts in CA (and even OR and NV!)] A last thing to try is look through the probate indexes of Sutter and Yuba counties (or anywhere else you think your Thomas lived) and look for a probate record for Garrett. Then you have to wade through the probates hoping to find a mention of your Thomas. Well, you certainally have your work cut out for you. I just hope Garrett is really his name and it wasn't changed or something! Good luck, - Mike >From: Linda J Hennessy <[email protected]> >To: [email protected] <[email protected]> >Date: Monday, September 04, 2000 8:38 AM >Subject: [CAYUBA] re: Sutter/Yuba counties > >Hello, >With the recent posting regarding the Spence family, it was mentioned >that Marysville was in Sutter County and Yuba City in Yuba County.
