    1. [CAYuba] Old Sacramento County Hospital Cemetery
    2. Sue Silver
    3. Greetings, While working on construction for their new Cancer Center this past Tuesday, UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento unearthed two sets of human remains from the old Sacramento County Hospital Cemetery. Despite the fact that both the county board of supervisors and the medical center knew the cemetery was there, the county transferred the land to the center in 1973. Davis intends to call these "archaeological remains" instead of bodies from the old cemetery. In this way they may be able to circumvent California law that requires certain steps be taken to relocate remains such as these. The county should have relocated the cemetery to another cemetery before handing the property over to UC Davis. Instead, now thirty years later, UC Davis claims to be surprised to have "solved" the mystery of the missing hospital cemetery! Please help me to persuade the county and the medical center to follow California law so that these past citizens of California will get a decent reburial elsewhere. There are about 57 other old county hospital cemeteries elsewhere in California that have the potential to suffer this same fate. Please cut and paste the following message and send to Sacramento County District 2 Supervisor Illa Collin at collini@saccounty.net . You can also fax it to her at (916) 874-7593. Or you can call her office at (916) 874-5481. ********************************************* Honorable Illa Collin, District 2 Supervisor County of Sacramento 700 H Street, Suite 2450 Sacramento, CA 95814 Dear Supervisor Collin: I have learned about the "discovery" of the old County Hospital Cemetery during the construction of the new wing of the UC Davis Cancer Center on Stockton Blvd. I understand the County should have relocated the entire cemetery before transferring this land to UC Davis, but didn't. Please help ensure that the remains that the county buried in its hospital cemetery are properly respected. Please work with UC Davis to relocate all the bodies as required by California Health and Safety Code section 8000 et seq. Sincerely, [Your Name, Address, phone number and Email address.] *********************************************** Thank you for your assistance on this very important matter. 1. [CAYuba] California specialties at NGS conference
    2. Barbara Leak
    3. A major genealogical event is coming to Sacramento in May!!! It's the National Genealogical Society (NGS) Conference in the States -- 19-22 May 2004. Full-color, 20-page registration brochures for the NGS Conference are in the mail and will be available at research libraries, family history centers and genealogical society meetings soon. This year's conference has some exciting offerings for people interested in California history and genealogy. One of the featured speakers is J.S. Holliday. Associated with UC Berkeley's Bancroft Library, the California Historical Society and the Oakland Museum of California, Mr. Holliday is a noted California Gold Rush historian and author of *The World Rushed In: The California Gold Rush Experience* and *Rush for Riches: Gold Fever and the Making of California*. The title of his conference presentation is "Far from Home and Family: The Origins of California's Risk-taking Culture." It's about the wild and adventuresome lifestyle of the men who came to the Gold Rush, far from the moral influence of their mothers, wives, sisters and daughters. Also of special interest to California researchers are the following classes: "California Gold Rush" "Research Facilities in the Golden State" both presented by Chuck Knuthson. Chuck is a native of northern California with deep roots in the gold country. He is webmaster of the Sierra County GenWeb site. "Did Your Ancestors' Siblings Take YOUR Family Papers to California?" by Sheila Benedict, CGRS. Sheila is a professional researcher from southern California specializing in California records. "Using California Records to Find Southern U.S. Ancestors" by J. Mark Low, CG. President of the Association of Professional Genealogists, Mark brings to his lecture the perspective of the importance of researching California records even if you don't live in California. Other classes pertinent to tracing the ancestry of Californians are on westward migration, railroad records and land records, especially federal land records. This is only the third time in more than 20 years that the NGS Conference has been held in California, and it won't be back any time soon. If you live in California, this is a once-in-a lifetime opportunity to experience a national conference without expensive travel costs. If you live in another state, but have California roots, this is the perfect excuse to visit the home of your ancestors. Please join us for "A Golden Prospect" National Genealogical Society Conference in the States Sacramento Convention Center 19-22 May 2004 Watch for brochures or visit www.ngsgenealogy.org and click on the SACRAMENTO logo. 1. [CAYuba] Marysville APPEAL 1-4-1895 page 1
    2. Well, the state let me have President Lincoln's day off, and Yuba County Library was still open. I found three great scores today, and I will share this one. I couldn't believe my eyes when I found this! Also, kathy Sedler has been doing a phenomenal job of transcribing-very important stuff! here is my very informative article! at Last! regards, Candi WAS IT MARY ANN? Marysville Daily Appeal January 4, 1896 page 1 Statement That the Young Woman is Dead--THE ASPHYXIATION ROUTE Not a Very Definite Establishment of Her Identity---The Letters of Inquiry A few days ago an account of a newly married couple being asphyxiated appeared in the San Francisco dailies, and accompanying it was the following death notices: In this city, December 30, 1894, Mary, beloved wife of the late John Smith, and daughter of Nicholas Powers, and sister of Alice and Jennie Powers, a native of Pennsylvania, aged 22 years. In this city, December 30, 1894, John, beloved husband of the late Mary Smith, a native of Ireland, aged 28 years. A lady who resides in San Francisco wrote to her father, a well-known resident of this city, informing him that the woman who was the victim of the deadly gas burner was the daughter of Nicholas Powers who worked at the Buckeye Mills for a number of years, and had been married to Henry Farenkam, for a number of years employed in the Kimball stable. An APPEAL reporter tried to locate Farenkam yesterday but was informed that he has not resided in this city for some time, but had been in town the early part of the week. Those who are intimately acquainted with Farenkam stated that he had never been divorced from Mary Ann, and that there must be some mistake, as she was a native of Marysville, not of Pennsylvania, as stated in the death notice. Her father's name is correctly stated as are also the names of her two sisters, and her age is about correct. The following particulars appeared in last Monday's call: "Sunday is known as "asphyxiation day" at the Morgue, for a Sabbath seldom comes without a case of suffocation by coal gas. Many of such cases come from lodging houses, where no attention is paid to gas burners. The fuddled or ingorant transient retires late saturday night, turns out the light and goes to bed ignorant of the fact that he has turned the stopcock too far, and the deadly fluid is filling the room. Next day his body is discovered and the Coroner's deputy reports that he found gas flowing from a burner in the apartment. "A newly married couple, John Smith and wife of Berkeley, were among the burner's victims yesterday. they came to this city Saturday afternoon and spent the evening at Michael Mitchell's saloon, 823 Howard Street. Smith was a railroad employee and was related to the saloonkeeper. He was married a week ago to the buxom girl, and took her to the city with him for the purpose of introducing her to his friends. Late at night the Smiths made their way to the ferry only to discover that the last boat had crossed the bay. They returned to Mitchell's and were invited to pass the remainder of the night in a furnished apartment adjoining the saloon. The invitation was gratefully accepted, and Mitchell went home leaving the gas burning in the room in which the young couple had retired. When the saloonkeeper entered his place yesterday morning the light in the room occupied by the guests was out, and the apartment filled with gas and the bride and groom lay dead together. The stopcock on the burner had been turned on a little too far. "A physician was summoned by Mitchell, and he declared that the Smiths had been dead two hours." About a month ago the unfortunate young woman wrote to a friend in this city to ascertain if Henry had any money and if he still owned an interest in the stallion, but she never said a word about being divorced or having been married again. Henry and his wife did not lead a very happy life as he got into trouble with her several times when she resided in the Fourth Ward. Until Farenkam comes to town again it will be impossible to ascertain if he knows anything about the divorce proceedings having been instituted, or if he was aware that his wife was married again. A well known resident of this city informed an APPEAL reporter last night that Mary Ann Powers was born in Pennsylvania and that she came to this city with her mother after her father, Nicholas Powers, had obtained employment. Her sisters, he stated, were all born in this city. He knew nothing, however, about her being divorced from Farenkam.

    2. Hello Dale--I cannot answer your questions, but I will say, if you are headed to Yuba County, you must stop in at the California Room in the library there--closed on Fridays, open a few hours on Saturdays. They ARE available online. There is a Ramey Index there, where a Mr Ramey indexed all names mentioned in the newspapers, courts, etc. Maybe your family is included. Regards, Candi

    1. [CAYuba] Yuba County Historical Society website or email address?
    2. Could someone please tell me whether the Yuba County Historical Society has a website and/or email address? I'll be visiting northern California sometime in the spring, and am wondering if the society might have any lithographs or reproductions of scenes from Long Bar, a mining camp on the Yuba during the Gold Rush. My great great grandfather lived there from 1849-1855. As I understand it, there isn't much to see at Long Bar itself, even if public access were possible, as it is buried in the "Yuba Goldfields" under all the debris from the hydraulic mining upstream. Thanks very much. Dale Bricker

    1. [CAYuba] John Henry Farrenkam
    2. I went recently to the California Room in Marysville's library. I found a death notice of my Nicholas Powers, who died in San Francisco 10-30-1896. The front page article mentioned his daughter, Mary Ann Powers Farrenkam had died by burns over a year before her father died. >From what I have been able to learn, Mary Ann, who was born 1875 in PA, married Henry Farenkamm, born 1853, probably in Yuba County about 1894-1895. Further records tell me Henry remarried and farmed land in Butte, Sutter and Yuba Counties. What are my resources to learn where Mary Ann Powers Farrenkam or Farenkamm was married or is buried? I looked for that name in the Ramey index, before I learned of alternate spellings. Is there someone in Marysville who can check the Ramey index for other ways to spell Farrenkam? Thanks if there is a new option. Regards, Candi
