    1. [CAYUBA] National House and Arnold Family in Marysville in the 1850s
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: knrivers Surnames: ARNOLD, BLISS Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.california.counties.yuba/1515/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hello, I have been researching my 4th great grandparents, Josiah Arnold and Elizabeth Bliss. I'm planning to write a book about Elizabeth's amazing life. She, Josiah and their two sons, Orson Pratt and Joseph Smith Arnold are listed as "Tavern Keepers" in the United States 1850 "Placerville and Vicinity" Census. I've spent years trying to determine the name and specific location of the tavern and believe I have finally found it! :-) Based on the California Historical Society Quarterly, vol 14, page 394: "The Beginnings of Marysville" by Earl Ramey: "These hostelries had been established on Second, Third and 'D' streets... smaller hotels... the National House run by... Arnold and Scott. So, I'm looking for any information, stories, photos, drawings, basically: anything relating to the Arnold family and/or the National House. I know that the family left Salt Lake for Marysville on 7 May 1850 and that Josiah died in Salt Lake 1 Sep 1859 so they could only have been in Marysville between 1850 and 1859. I'm hoping to learn about Elizabeth's life in Marysville and also where she died and was buried. The rest of her family made it back to Salt Lake City and were buried together there. I feel a strong pull to discover where Elizabeth died and where she is buried so that I can honor her life by marking the site with a tombstone. It makes me feel really sad at the prospect of her being alone and in a potentially unmarked grave. Thank you so much for your time and consideration. Any help you can provide will be unendingly appreciated!!! If you were not the best person to ask this of, would you please forward this message to anyone you feel may have additional photos, drawings, information and/or stories? Thank you, again, Kristin Rivers Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. The small hotel was called, The National House. Do any of the photos have smallish buildings with a couple with two male children? 3. Hi again. For reasons that I haven't a clue about, I've decided to some more research on Yuba & Sutter county Ryans (up to the early 1900s). So, anyone who is interested is officially invited to join my web site: http://RyanYubaCounty.MyHeritage.com I've already found several "groups" of them at both the local Catholic cemeteries, but I'm sure someone out there has some clues that would really move things along. Also, some of the markers are very difficult to read. Appreciate some hints. I pass through the Marysville, and Linda areas twice a day along my work commute route. Makes one ponder. The Ramney (sp?) Index contains information on family and community events covered by publications within the Room. Additionally, the local genealogy web site gives very interesting information regarding burials in St Joseph Cemetery (http://www.yubaroots.com/deaths/di-ro.htm); please respect the Copyright restrictions given on the home page. A quick check gave the following information: Ryan, Mrs Elizabeth; Nov 9, 1915 Appeal-Democrat Newspaper Death at Mayfield, Native of Ireland, age 88 Former Resident of Marysville, to California 1863 Ryan, Joseph; May 6 1874 Appeal-Democrat Newspaper Found dead Ryan, Joseph; June 30 1875, page 2 Appeal-Democrat Newspaper Age 34 years, resident of Linda (Yuba County) Ryan, Joseph; July 11 1890, page 2 Appeal-Democrat Newspaper In Marysville, July 10, Native of California; age 18 Sarah Costello; Feb 10 1939, page 3 Appeal-Democrat Newspaper Covered wagon pioneer of Yuba County; Family and personal history A quick review of the microfilm for Feb 10 1939 (page 3) of the Appeal-Democrat: "Former Resident Taken by Death Mrs. Sarah Costello, formerly of Marysville, died at her home in San Francisco January 26, according to belated information reaching here. She was a covered wagon pioneer, and one of the few remaining persons who came to the state in that manner. She came with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Ryan, in the sixties, before the completion of the railroad, the family locating in Marysville in 1863. She had resided at the bay for many years. The Costellos lived in Linda district for awhile before moving into the city. Mike Costello was a carpenter and helped build a number of the structures still standing in this city A daughter, Mrs. Josephine Carney, worked in the Fair store for a long time before her marriage. Deceased is survived my her husband and the following children: Mrs. Elizabeth O'Brien, Mrs. Daniel Costello, Mrs. Josephine Carney, Mrs. Genevieve Engels, Sister Mary Jerome, O.P., Sister Loretto Julie, S. N. D., and the late Mrs. Alice Kleveselli. Eleven grandchildren also survive her." Also interesting is that Mike Costello was not present in the Ramney Index; perhaps he also died in San Francisco (San Francisco County); a number of Ryans are buried at St Joseph's Cemetery, but I do not see Michael. 3. Good morning, Finally had a moment to do a quick check for Mr Driscoll. Turns out to be a rather interesting tale. For additional info (including paper or pdfs of the articles), email me at scshepard@comcast.net, sc_shepard@hotmail.com Appeal-Democrat (technically the Evening Appeal-Democrat), Monday, May 31, 1920, page 1 "STANTON DRISCOLL IS INSTANTLY KILLED" Stanton Driscol, prominent Sutter county rancher, was instantly killed this afternoon at a point opposite the John Sullivan ranch near Lomo, in Sutter county, when a northbound Southern Pacific passenger train struck his Ford car as he was attempting to cross the railroad track. His body was badly mangled and his auto completely demolished. Driscol had previously crossed the track, going to a neighboring ranch and was returning to the Sullivan ranch when the accident happened. The train crew, who witnessed the accident, stated Driscol had full view of the approaching train and they are at a loss to know why he drove onto the track directly in front of the approaching train. It is believed the noise of the auto and the north wind prevent Driscol from hearing the approaching train. The train that hit Driscol left Marysville at 12:40 p.m. He leaves a wife, Jennie Driscol, and a three-year-old child, besides two sisters. He formerly lived Live Oak where he is well known. Corner P. W. Rowe took charge of the remains, which were removed to ? E. Bevan & Son's undertaking parlors at Marysville. Rowe will hold an inquest Wednesday morning at 10 o'clock at the Yuba City courthouse. [note: Yuba City is the county seat for Sutter County; Marysville is the county seat for Yuba County] [note: the May 31st and June 1st articles were poorly microfilmed; both articles are on the left margin are thus partially obscured] Evening Appeal-Democrat, Tues, June 1, 1920, page 3 "DEATH OF STANTON DRISCOLL" Live Oak, June 1. Funeral services for the late Stanton Driscoll, who was killed yesterday near Lomo by an S F train will be held at 2 p.m., in the Methodist church at Live Oak. Interment to be made in Live Oak cemetery. Evening Appeal-Democrat, Wed, June 2, 1920, page 1 "CORONER HOLDS INQUEST" YUBA CITY, June 2. P.W. Rowe conducted the inquest over the remains of Stanton Driscoll, who was killed Monday noon by the 12:40 Southern Pacific train. The jury consisting of the following, brought in a verdict that he came to his death by a collision with the train: Eugene Montna, F. E. Taylor, J. Malone, W. M. Cassidy, L. H. Woodworth, H. L. Hite, D. E. Carter, J. Risinger and D. E. Anderson Sutter County Records - Clerk office: Death certificate: (book 1921, page 182) Place of death: near Lomo Wife: Jennie, born in 1888 Age at death: 32 Occupation: Fruit Grower Birth place: CA Father: John Driscoll (Unknown birth place) Mother: Ella Mitchell (Born in CA) Length of residence: 1 year Length in state: 32 years Informant: Jennie Driscoll, Live Oak Filed: June 2, 1920 Date of Death: May 31, 1920 Cause of death: By being struck by Southern Pacific train #22 while crossing track at Sullivan Crossing. Image of the census indicates several crossed out entries; appears to be the Butte Township A WW1 Draft Card shows a Walter Stanton Driscol living in Sutter County I've mentioned the fine staff at the Marysville Public Library (California Room) that the Ramey Index should updated to include the May 31, page article, which is the actual obituary. Lastly, I've left a phone message with what I believe to be his cemetery; I will update when find out for sure.
