I am trying to discover what happened to my grand-aunt Josephine Austin. She was born Josephine Lucinda (or Lucinda Josephine) Parsons and she went by Josephine. In 1906 she married John Lloyd Austin who died in 1910. I found her in the 1920 census living with her brother William George Parsons in Marysville but have not been able to locate her in the CADI. Is there someone who could look for me in the marriage records of Yuba county to see if she perhaps remarried after 1920? Thank you in advance for your help. Ronna El Dorado County, California
Richard, The best resource for you, in Marysville, is the Yuba County Library's California Room. They have an extensive collection of City Directories, as well as books and newspapers dating from the mid 1800's. The library is located on Second Street in Marysville and the staff is most helpful. The phone number is (530) 741-6241. As Patricia mentioned, there is much valuable information on the website. Good luck... -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] <[email protected]> To: [email protected] <[email protected]> Date: Tuesday, March 02, 1999 10:17 AM Subject: CAYUBA-D Digest V99 #11
Dear Richard: One place to check are the cemetery listings on the Yuba Co CAGenWeb genealogy pages. The Welcome Page is at: http://www.compuology.com/cagenweb/yubacty.htm There are many links to other pages and resources, so take your time going through these items. Also new to the list (it should be up by 2 Mar 99) is a Yuba County Surname List. These names are being taken from the Queries posted the past 3 years, and will be announced to the rest of the subscribers later today. Good luck with your research! I am a Baseball Historian and am attempting to find the exact date and place of death of a former major leaguer by the name of John J Cullen. Mr Cullen was one of the first well known ballplayers in California. He began playing in the early 1870s and was from Marysville,Cal. He is not in the 1900 Cal census as far as I can tell. I have no access to Marysville City Directories, if they exist, so I am an a dead end. Can anyone tell me about resources I can get at in Marysville that can lead me to him? Richard Malatzky
Thanks Patricia for the help. I thought I would post the following information about name abbreviations to help others. My Jno ancestor is John. First there is a site on the web which discusses handwriting. It is: http://www.firstct.com/fv/oldhand.html And then here is a summary: Regarding Name Abbreviations, the following are found in The Researcher's Guide to American Genealogy, Val D. Greenwood, Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc., Baltimore, 1988, pp. 21-22: Note: an underlined letter indicates it is written as a "superior letter" (superscript) and some names are "terminated" (abbreviated) by putting a period or colon after them. In very early times, often only the first letter of the name was used. Aaron - Aarn Abraham - Abram Andrew - Andrw , Andw Arthur - Artr , Arthr Barbara - Barba Benjamin - Benja, Benjn , Benj: Charles - Chas , Chars Christopher - Xr , Xopher, Xofer Daniel - Danl David - Davd Ebenezer - Ebenr Elizabeth - Eliza Franklin - Frankln , Frankn , Frank: Frederick - Fredck , Fredrk George - Geo:, Go Gilbert - Gilbt , Gilrt James - Jas , Jas: Jeremiah - Jera , Jerema , Jer: Jonathan - Jonathn , Jonn , Jon: John - Jno: , Jno Joseph - Jos , Jos: Leonard - Leond Margaret - Margt Nathan - Nathn Nathaniel - Nathl , Nathanl Patrick - Patrk Richard - Richd , Rich: Robert - Robt , Rob: Samuel - Saml , Sam: Stephen - Stephn Thomas - Thos , Tho: Vincent - Vinct , Vincnt Virginia - Virga , Virg: Wilford - Wilfd , Wilf: William - Willm , Wm , Will: Zachariah - Zacha , Zachara , Zach: Best wishes, Tom Gleason
Dear Tom: Perhaps one of the other listers has access to that Yuba Co portion of the 1850 U.S. Census, and with a little luck, might be able to read the full name of the mine for you. If not, the Yuba County keeper of land records should be the one to have the records of the mines. There is a County Offices contact address on the Yuba Co GenWeb page at: http://www.compuology.com/cagenweb/yubacty.htm As for the Jno. there is lots of controversy about what name it actually shortens, with both Jonathan and John having about equal votes, but there are other, too. It is very important to leave it as "Jno" with your census citation (even after you learn his full name). As an example, one of my gr-grandfathers, named William, has documents/citations in his records as: William, Will, Wm, Willm, and my computer records for those items show his name those ways, i.e., Bible (Birth); William Sparse; Marriage: Wm Sparse; Marriage: Land Rec Wm & Will Sparse; Baptism of child: Wm Sparse; Baptism of child: Willm Sparse; Probate: William Sparse. There are probably other spellings I have not found. Hi, I found a potential ancestor of mine in Yuba County in the 1850 Census. It indicated that he was working at the XXX Creek Mines. I couldn't decipher the handwriting for the XXX and was wondering if anyone might know the actual name of this mine? Also, as an aside, he is listed as Jno Clise. Would the Jno stand for Jonathan or John perhaps? Thanks for any help! Tom Gleason Malibu, CA
Richard, Thanks for the good information about the school in Marysville. I had the name right in the message title and not in the text. It was Notre Dame School. You don't happen to know of any Burrows families currently in the area do you? I am searching for any descendants of Jacob L. Burrows who arrived from Missouri with family in 1852. Ralph Ralph Anderson Boulder, CO [email protected]
Ralph, Every female child on the maternal side of my family went to Notre Dame School in Marysville - my Mother, my Aunt, a Great Grandmother, cousins, etc. Locally it was always referred to as "the convent" and was (is) in St. Joseph's parish. To my knowledge it was never called Saint Marys School. The Catholic parish in Yuba City was, and I assume still is, St. Isadore's. The rectory and office for St. Joseph's is on 8th Street in Marysville and I'm sure they can help you with records, etc. I'm sure directory assistance has the number. Hope this helps... -----Original Message----- From: Ralph Anderson <[email protected]> To: [email protected] <[email protected]> Date: Tuesday, February 02, 1999 9:12 PM Subject: [CAYUBA-L] Notre Dame School, Marysville >Just joined list. Now that I've given a little geography lesson, I want you to know I mis-read your message, and thought the school was in Yuba City, as well as your grandmother's residence. I'm sorry for that error! There is a Yuba Co GenWeb page (at): http://www.compuology.com/cagenweb/yubacty.htm where you can post queries to the national GenConnect query system (from a link on the Yuba Co Query page). There might be some other links on the Yuba Co GenWeb page to help you, or some look-up volunteer items on one of the pages. The best volunteer researcher had to drop out because of illness last year, but sometimes she reads the queries and tries to help. Hoping you can find what you are looking for. I am not a resident of Yuba Co., but try to maintain the GenWeb pages for them. Good luck, Patricia Ralph Anderson wrote:
Hi, Ralph: If the school was in Yuba City, where she lived, then that is Sutter county. Have you done any research in Sutter County for the school or your Burrows family? Sutter Co. became the county west of the dividing river, while Marysville was the original county seat on the east side of the river in Yuba Co. Yuba Co. was given to the original "big" county before it was divided in 1850 and again in 1852. Believe it was because the Yuba River (from the Sierra Nevada range to the east) sweeps down into Marysville, joining one or both of the Feather and Sacramento rivers now dividing Marysville and Yuba City. Hope this helps you in your research, Patricia <[email protected]> Ralph Anderson wrote: > > Just joined list. Just joined list. Here is my first question: I have a history text book published in 1860 with an inscription suggesting that my grand mother Amanda Burrows was in attendance at the Saint Marys School on Marysville at this time. She would have been 15 years old in 1860. She lived in Yuba City. I am seeking information about the school and as to whether any school records from this period have survived. I understand that St. Joseph's Catholic Church was built in 1856. I have a reference which states that the Sisters of Notre Dame established an academy for young ladies in this period in a 3 story building erected for the purpose. It goes on to say that the institution expanded to later cover an entire block and was accredited to the University of California. Was this Academy called Saint Marys School? Any information would be appreciated. Ralph Ralph Anderson Boulder, CO [email protected]

Good morning (Tues). Had a message from GenConnect that the boards have now been fixed, and are running well on the new rootsweb equipment. However, I've had four emails in the past hour saying you are still being "blocked" off and are not being admitted to the boards. Sorry, I'll try to check the help list for board admins' to see what is happening, as I haven't tried to go to a board this morning. Thank you for your patience. It will be cleared as soon as GenConnect can do so - they have been wonderful through all this set-up and move! Just to let you know I've started an obituary board for Yuba County CA, at: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ca/YubaObits These will include "current" obits and any "old" obits you may want to have posted to the board. The obits will be in abstract form, and will not include names of any living relatives. Please email me any pertinent Yuba County CA obituaries you might want to share, so they can be abstracted and posted.
