The following was posted by Ted Steele <[email protected]> on Wed, 26 Jan 2000 on the Yuba County GenConnect Query Forum: - -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Surname: Steele, Steel My great-grandfather, William Wilson Steele, left his home in Delaware County, Iowa, for the gold rush on 1 April 1852. (That date is taken from his obit.) He remained "out west" until August 1866, when he returned to Iowa. I have no details as to how he travelled, where he wound up, or what he did there. We do know that he was injured (the family story is that he "took an arrow in the leg") because he walked with a crutch when he returned to Iowa. Can anyone provide me with basic sources to search? I have already checked the Federal and State censuses for California during this period. There is a possible Wm Steele from Iowa listed in the 1852 state census in Yuba County (p. 134), but the age isn't right. The guy in the census is age 28; my William (b. 1835) would have been 17. Are there indexes to claimes filed, wagon trains to/from, etc??? I'd appreciate any leads. Thanks, Ted - --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Any replies should be sent to the Yuba County GenConnect Query Forum [<http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ca/Yuba>] unless it is personal or involves live people addresses etc. when it should be sent to Ted Steele <[email protected]>. --

I'd like to share with you a new mailing list [email protected] and [email protected] (digest) especially for archiving CADI lookups so that only one list has to be searched to find previously identified CADI information. If you're already on the rootsweb.com mailing list you know the subscribe procedures (I'll include them at the end of the message for those that can't remember) So.... If you are a volunteer that does CADI lookups I would like to invite you to subscribe and provide assistance to others that are looking for CADI information. If you currently post the data found to a county list or a regional list, just add this list to your address book and post your results here also to make searching easier Or If you are looking for CADI information, this is the list to ask for help. Or If you have had CADI information provided to you in the past and would like to have it posted to the list so that others can find it in the archives, you're welcome to post those previous lookups also. I would like to see CA death transcriptions shared here also...... So if you are one of those volunteers that visits recorder's offices on a regular basis and does death certificate transcriptions, please share your information here. Or if you have death certificates in your possession and would like to share, please post them also..... With the advent of all the CA county lists it has become increasingly difficult to search the archives for all the previous CADI listings that have been provided between NORCAL, SOCAL, CAROOTS, etc. So, if you do either sort of lookup, CADI or death certificate transcriptions, please subscribe and share. It's really easy to just put the address in your address book and remember to add it to the message when you do your regular post to NORCAL, SOCAL, CAROOTS or your county list. For those that don't need another list to belong to, I would be happy to post your past or present CADI or death certificate transcriptions for you - just send me the information at [email protected] Colleen Norby Subscribe to the list in mail mode by sending a message to [email protected] that contains the word subscribe and nothing else. If you prefer digest mode, you should send the command instead to [email protected] To unsubscribe, you should send the command "unsubscribe" to [email protected] (if in mail mode) or [email protected] (if in digest mode.) To switch from one mode to the other, you should unsubscribe from one and then subscribe to the other. There is no "no mail" mode -- if you want messages to stop, you should simply unsubscribe.

The same people are involved in managing both of them so you could let them know of the problem from either one. Cyndi also requests to be notified about such problems. To determine the CITY of death you will need to order the death certificate or find a volunteer to transcribe the death certificate at the county recorder's office. The death certificate will give you burial information and the funeral home that handled the services, maybe leading you to an obituary. The number following the date of each listing is the state reference number for ordering the death certificate from the state. Here's the info site for CA vital records: http://vitalrec.com/ca.html Check out the SSDI if a soc. sec. number appears in the death listing to see if you can get a birthdate and maybe a last location http://ssdi.genealogy.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/ssdi.cgi If you find a social security number listed, please use the Post-em feature to share the information from the CADI so others may have access to the data also. Hi! I am trying to pick up the trail in California of my Craddock's. Thomas Elmore Craddock, Sr (b. 1781 in VA, died 1869 in Yuba Co., buried in Browns Valley Cementery) came to California sometime after 1850 from Madison Co. Missouri. One of his daughter's, Elizabeth, had married a John Rule in Mo in 1844, and moved to Rule Ranch, Sonoma Co., California shortly thereafter. After Thomas' wife, Hannah, died, ca 1845, Thomas, his daughter Margaret Johnson, her children, and some of Thomas' sons came to California. I believe that the sons that came were the sons that were living with the family in 1850....Caleb Craddock (b. 1829) and Edmond Craddock (b. 1826). I have been told that family members died along the way. I have been told that when Thomas died, some of his family left, and some stayed. I have found the family (or some of it, in records) of Margaret Craddock Johnson's descendants. The ones I have found are of daughter Jane Johnson and Jacob B. Grandstaff. I have found no reference to Caleb or Edmond Craddock. Any help picking up this trail will be greatly appreciated. Barbara Craddock Pike
Wonder if anyone has access to the 1850 Census for Yuba County and could do a look-up for a James Gordon, William Fowler and Peter Sanford. I found a James Gordon on an 1850 Yuba Co Index and would like to find out if it's "my" James Gordon. James Gordon from WI went to CA during the Gold Rush and it is possible that Fowler and Sanford did too. James returned to WI, but Fowler and Sanford may have stayed in CA. Any assistance is greatly appreciated. Thank you. Gail Gordon [email protected] http://www.execpc.com/~gmgordon Milwaukee, WI
Hi! Yes, there is. Just moved east from CA in Jan 99 after 11 years in the Marysville area. Have been in the Yuba County Library California Room many times. They have old maps, family histories (a few), old newspapers, all sorts of things there. A good source of information. However they aren't open a couple of days a week so it's best to call them before you make a trip down there. Happy hunting!
