To date, I have traced my direct Cavill line back to the late 1400's in north-west Essex; where my Cavill ancestors lived until the late 1800's, before moving to North London. I am not an expert genealogist, but I am very experienced; and welcome all and any messages from my "kin" Cavills, wherever they may be.

Surnames: Cavill, Brown also Fogg, Batty, Eastwoo, Rushworth on my father's side Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/BKI.2ACIB/22.1 Message Board Post: Could your Walter Cavill possibly be my great-great-uncle, born 1856 in Ellerton, Yorkshre, married to Dorothy Ann, born Loftus in Cleveland, North Yorkshire? Walter's family (father George, mother Sarah nee Brown [my gt gt grandmother], and 5 children) moved to Loftus between the 1861 and 1871 censuses. George is mentioned in an 1890 directory as a "clothier and emigration agent" having previously been referred to as a tailor. In the 1881 census Walter (cabinet maker) & Dorothy (dressmaker) are living in Liverton, near Loftus (with no children), but they do not appear in the 1891 census. If this could possibly be the same person as yours (and even if not), please let me know. And if there is any evidence of Walter's sister Miranda or Marinda coming with them, I'd be fascinated to know as my great-grandmother apparently used to talk of "Aunt Miranda who went to America". Thanks! Diana, England

    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/BKI.2ACIB/10.2 Message Board Post: Hello Maureen Here's what I've got on Thomas Tor at the moment - I can send you images of the 1871, 1881 and 1891 census returns if you like, but I'll need your email address, if you don't want to do that I'll transcribe them for you and post them here, jsut let me know. Here are the highlights: Thomas was born in Upper Hollow Meadows, Sheffield around 1833. He was the eldest of 10 children. He is listed with his parents for the 1851 and 1861 censuses then in 1871 he's suddenly a widower with 2 possible children and enumerated at the house of his brother Charles. In 1881 he has married Matilda and is living at house 2 court 2 Bramwell St, Sheffield with no sign of the possible children from his first marriage but with 2 children with Matilda. (incidentally, the daughter you mentioned Alice Allott Frudd born about 1873 isn't mentioned on this census, could you confirm that she is Matilda's daughter please? then I'll add her into my records. In the 1891 census the surname has changed to Cavell and they have 6 of their children living with them. Interesting points: 1. can't find him in the 1901 census (yet!) 2. In the 1881 census and in later records that may be his children and grandchildren (still to check this out) the name has acquired a hyphen to become Tor-Cavell I hope this is of interest to you. In a bizarre coincidence, I've just received an email from a Judith enquiring about Matilda Frudd! I've directed her to the Frudd board and given her your name so you might get an email from her. Best wishes Amanda Cavell

Surnames: cavill cavell Classification: Lookup Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/BKI.2ACIB/10.1 Message Board Post: I guess you'll have fund your info by now, but just in case: Thomas Torr was the brother of my gt gt gt grandfather, his parents were Charles Cavill (b 1809 Sheffield) and Ann (Hannah) Gibbons (b 1812 Oughtibridge) Thomas was their eldest son, Matilda was his second wife, he had 2 children with his first wife and I know of 6 children with Matilda. He and Matilda lived in Sheffield and Thomas worked as a Table blade Forger. It's been a bit tricky following him in the census returns... or would be if it wasn't for the Tor - his place of birth changed from Sheffield to Wales for 1881 and his name changed to CAVELL in 1891 - as it did for most of the family. hope this is useful to someone!

    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/BKI.2ACIB/1.7.2.1 Message Board Post: The Cavill line originated in Howden, East Yorkshire; the name originally being "Cafeld" - meaning "Jackdaw field". The Normans changed the "feld"(old English for "field') to "ville"(the French for "place"); which changed the meaning to "Jackdaw place" - same thing, different language, that's all. Cavil( place name) is in the Domesday Book for East Yorkshire. Howden is/was the site of Cavil(l) Hall(razed to the ground in the 1800's) which was like a small scale castle with a moat; and the rebuilt Caville Hall(built over the filled-in moat) which was demolished in the late 1950's to the early 1960's, due to subsidence. To-day, Cavill(e) Hall Farm is owned and leased by the Norwich Union Insurance Company(since circa 1946) and the terraced row of farm workers' cottages are called "Cavill Cottages" - about four in all, from memory. Cavell may have had Norman origins, but it started in Cornwall; the coat-of-arms being about 200 years younger that the Cavill coat-of-arms. Neither family has a direct, right-of-claim descendant alive to-day; and has not for several hundred years. Cavell is more common than Cavill in the south & south-west England. Since none of us can claim direct line descent from the original surnamed Cavell or Cavill family, I am of the strong opinion that we have all inherited a phonetic-cum-better known or seen spelling of Cavill or Cavell; and that in fact, the two families are now one and the same family. My own line is/was Cavill; but, I have Cavell and many other variations of the spelling in my line - back to phonetics etc. [email protected]
