Hello, I sent an email out to this list about a week or so ago about attempting to get an amendment to last year's SB 1614 (Speirs) that will limit access to vital records in California beginning January 1, 2002. I have gotten some good responses and offers of assistance to try to get some modifications to the upcoming limitations. We have an attorney willing to work Pro Bono with the mechanics of the language for an amendment, and will be conferring on that on January 7th. Those of us working on the foundation of this amendment are not trying to overturn SB 1614 altogether, as we just don't feel that will be successful. We are trying to work with the framework and intent of SB 1614, but not to the severity of it. We are presently planning to exempt birth and death records of a certain age. For example, 80 years on birth records and 50 years on death records. (We haven't concluded the exact age of the exemptions we'll request.) We would like to hear from others as to suggestions relative to exemptions of records that may be more fully and readily accessible AND vitals indices that will be permissible for online access. Please send them to me at ssilver1951@jps.net and I will compile the responses for the group. If anyone else has begun to work on a project of this type, we would like to know that also. Perhaps there is a way to work together toward something better than SB 1614 has left us with. Sincerest thanks, Sue Silver, President El Dorado County Pioneer Cemeteries Commission (a non-profit corporation)
Ron, I have communicated with the El Dorado County Recorder who queried some of his associates. They have no objection to an amendment allowing records to be viewed and shared similar to the time delay for the US Census. However, they would like someone else to take the lead to obtain such an amendment. I believe from what he indicated, the County Recorders' Association (?) would support it. I worked hard to try to defeat this bill because of the work I do trying to identify who died and was buried in which of our multiple cemeteries in this county. The online index has been a treasure for that work. I believe I may be able to persuade a legislator to introduce a bill for such an amendment, but I think we'd have to submit draft language and a statement of the purpose of such an amendment. Anyone interested in getting together for such a purpose? Hello! I am new to this list hoping to find out more about the Ventura State Home for Girls. In the 1920 Census my Grandmothers sister, Laura E. LILES age 16 is there. I've done searches on-line and haven't found out much about the Home itself; if its still in existence under another name or if it's closed down where would the records be stored? Any help and suggestions are appreciated. Thanks, Marie "Life isn't measured by the number of breaths we take; but by the moments that take our breath away"
Hello from France, I'm trying to find the american descendants of my grand'grand uncle, Joseph DANANCHER, who came from France to USA about 1885. One of his grand'daughter was Louise SOLLER, born about 1900, daughter of John SOLLER and Alice DANANCHER. I know that Louise SOLLER married Gustave JOHNSON on june 16th 1927 but no idea where... Gustave was from Santa Paula, and had swedish origins. Do you have an idea in order to find more information ? I'm a genealogist in France since 15 years, but totally newby concerning genealogy in the USA ! I did a special web page concerning my american cousins quest : http://perso.wanadoo.fr/jean-philippe.henry/DanancherENG.html Any idea or information will be greatly appreciated !! This is kind of long, but well worth reading! I found a way to use FOIA in genealogy to request records that actually results in moving your search along. In my every day professional work I use the FOIA (Freedom of Information Act) to acquire records from all areas. The FOIA is a tool that is available to everyone. The request is free but it can be very confusing. You have to know where to send it, you have to have the right request form, a properly worded letter, you have to know what type of information they need to get you what you are looking for. You cannot just send in a generic "find this" request. Using the proper request, the proper form, a properly worded letter you will get the documentation you are seeking. I received 84 pages in the first probate request, two weeks later, an additional 124 pages. All stuff they copied from microfiche. At $ .10 per page. Some of these re! cords went back to 1838. I will send you the forms (both State and Federal), the request letter, what you need to send them in terms of specifics, if you have them, or if not, where and how to find them. I have compiled a list of each State’s statutes and codes that you will need to reformat the request form for your particular State or the State you are sending the request to. I have included some specific searching directions and examples that may help you. For those of us who have been unable to get to an out-of-town location or to afford a researcher it's great. My email is genealogyprincess@hotmail.com or klawler@batorberlin.com. Please only use these for responses. I’ll be happy to answer questions! I will be happy to help anyone with any additional information or reformatting the forms for other states, other data requests, etc. Any other requests for help, I will send a form. I am requesting $6.58 for paper, copying, assembly, large envelope, and postage costs. This package of information is 22+ pages (and growing) -- and I had no idea this would be responded to in such huge numbers (!!). So, if you’re interested, send $6.58, personal check is ok, [Kathy Lawler] to Genealogy Princess, 20757 Camden Square, #210, Lathrup Village, MI 48076 or use my Paypal address [checking] for $7.00 to Genealogyprincess2000@yahoo.com. Either way, don’t forget your address!! I will send you the information the very day I receive your address and funds. Lastly, additional information, new ways I can come up with to use FOIA will be sent to you free of charge and I’ll also be happy to answer any questions you may have. This is strictly to get you! information that will help you gather documents and information to further your search for your ancestors. Thanks! Kathleen Lawler
