    1. [CAVentura] Memorial Dedications - Sacramento County
    2. Sue Silver
    3. Hello, >From time to time I will be forwarding announcements regarding activities for historic cemeteries. Sacramento County will be holding multiple memorial dedications this next weekend. For more information, please use this link: http://www.usgennet.org/usa/ca/state/Sac_Memorial_Dedication.htm Please send your questions to the email address listed on the announcement. Two years ago, the Board of Supervisors of Sacramento County created the Cemetery Advisory Committee under the Office of the Coroner. The Committee reports directly to the Board of Supervisors and advises the board on the needs of the historic cemeteries in the county. If you have time to attend these dedications, I'm sure you will find it worthwhile. Sincerely, Sue Silver, State Coordinator California Saving Graves

    1. [CAVentura] Historic Cemetery Legislation
    2. Sue Silver
    3. Hello, Since 2000 I have been involved in trying to get California legislation enacted that will help the plight of our state's historic cemeteries. In 2000 a Bill was introduced and passed both houses of the legislature (only 5 NOE votes) that would have created the California Historic Cemetery Commission. That commission would have cost almost nothing but would have contributed greatly to the review and assessment of the status of our historic graveyards. In the Fall of 2000, GOVERNOR GRAY DAVIS vetoed the Bill even though his office had been consulted as to the Governor's preferences on how the Bill should have been framed. Lately I have been working on portions of existing Bills to ensure that the needs of the historic cemeteries that could be addressed through such Bills are considered. I will be sending out information on a couple of items once they are signed by Governor Davis - if they are not also vetoed by him.... If there are any of you who see a need that may need additional legislation in order to assist the historic cemeteries, please contact me direct at ssilver1951@jps.net. I will try to advise you or otherwise determine if or how such legislation might be addressed. I'd like to thank those who in the past have sent me emails of support. Our California ancestors all repose in California cemeteries. The vast majority of the cemeteries in the state are historic and pre-date the 20th century. It is important that we provide protection and preservation of these places of rest. Together we can make a difference. Sincerely, Sue Silver, State Coordinator California Saving Graves www.usgennet.org/usa/ca/state/

    1. [CAVentura] Joseph Hamilton SHERRARD died Ventura Co, Ca in 1903
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: SHERRARD, ANDERSON, MADDOX, GOODE, GOOD Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/CY.2ADI/564 Message Board Post: Searching for the children of Joseph Hamilton SHERRARD. My 3g-uncle Pinckney Anderson's 3rd wife was a Rachel Jane Sherrard born abt 1853 in Iowa or Ohio. I got her full name from the death certificates of her daughter Maggie and son Rufus (see 1900). Per the 1860 census below, I feel certain she is the Rachel listed in the family of Joseph Hamilton Sherrard on the 1860 Dallas Co Tx census below but I have no proof. 1860 Dallas Co Tx/Prec 7/Lancaster/HH 207-211/pg : Sherrard, J H/HH/wm age 35 Oh /blacksmith Sherrard, Lucinda/wf age 35 Oh Sherrard, George E/wm age 14 Oh Sherrard, Mary E/wf age 12 Oh Sherrard, Jacob/wm age 10 Oh Sherrard, Henry/wm age 08 Iowa SHERRARD, RACHAEL/wf age 06 born Iowa Sherrard, Lucy/wf age 05 Iowa Sherrard, Bolivar/wm age 04 Tx Sherrard, Calvin/wm age 01 Tx I have not located Rachel Jane on the 1870 or 1880 censuses yet but since she was married twice before she married Uncle Pinckney, I don't know what surname to look for. Except, her daughter Masona "Sonie" was born in 1877 and her maiden name was GOODE per the death certificates of 2 of her children. 1900 Navarro Co Tx/ED 108/Prec 7/HH 304-304/pg 206b,207a- ANDERSON, Pink/HH/wm age 70 born Jul 1829 Tx/SC/SC/ Married 17 yrs Anderson, Jane/wife/wf age 48 born Mar 1852 Oh/Oh/Oh/ Married 17yrs/2 of 6 chn lvg Anderson, Maggie/dtr/wf age 12 born Aug 1887 Tx/Tx/Oh Anderson, Rufus/son/wm age 10 born May 1890 Tx/Tx/Oh Anderson, Sam/son/wm age 07 born Oct 1892 Tx/Tx/Oh Sherrard, Jim/boarder/wm age 28 born Jan 1872 Tx/Oh/Oh Maddox, Sonie/step-dtr/wf age 23 b May 1877 Tx/Ky/Oh/widow/2 of 2 chn lvg Maddox, _egus?/g-son/wm age 04 born Jan 1896 Tx/Tx/Ga Maddox, Roy/g-son/wm age 07 born Jun 1897 Tx/Tx/Ga 1910 Freestone Co Tx/ED 22/Wortham/HH /360-362pg 108b: ANDERSON, Pinckney/HH/wm age 80 Tx/In/In/3rd marriage 28yrs Anderson, Rachel/wife/wf age 58 Iowa/Oh/Oh/ 3rd marriage 28yrs/ 7 of 7 chn lvg Anderson, Houston/son/wm age 17 Tx/Tx/Iowa/SINGLE I need to find Joseph Hamilton Sherrard and his children on the 1870 and 1880 censuses to see if there are any clues to finding Rachel Jane by their locations, family members, and/or neighbors. I searched these censuses over and over but so far those listed below are all I have been able to find. Joseph Hamilton Sherrard - 1870 Ellis Co Tx Mary Ellen - 1870 Dallas Co Tx (sister Lucy, brother Wm H in HH) George Emery - 1880 Navarro Co Tx Wm Henry - 1880 Johnson Co Tx Rachel Jane - 1900 Navarro Co Tx Rachel Jane - 1910 Freestone Co Tx I tried to get a copy of George Emery Sherrard's obituary from the Corsicana library but they said they don't have newspaper for his death date. As he died in Navarro Co Tx ,1899, and Rachel Jane was living there in 1900 finding his obituary would be the very best document I could find other than Joseph Hamilton Sherrard's Bible or Joseph Hamilton Sherrard's will or estate papers naming his surviving children... Does anyone have anything that might help me locate Joseph Hamilton Sherrard's Bible? Estate papers? Children on the 1870-1930 censuses? George Emery Sherrard's obituary? I have spent more than 10 years trying to unravel the wives, children, and step-children of my 3g-uncle Pinckney Anderson and I am so close now..... My heartfelt thanks for anything you might share with me, Kathye [Payne] Upham Bogata, Texas
