No, you will not notice any changes on the website yet, but they are coming and major ones when they do. As soon as Steve and Aaron get all the work done and it all uploaded which could be anyday now, you will see the following additions: > >Sources for all the counties which have been completed. >The following new areas for lookup: > Parts of Amador County > Parts of Del Norte County > Parts of Humboldt County > Kern County > Lake County > More in Los Angeles County > Modoc County > Parts of Nevada County > Placer County > The Rest of San Bernardino County > More San Francisco County > San Luis Obispo County > Parts of Santa Barbara County > Sutter County > Parts of Tehama County > >And possibly even more. We are getting a lot done, but with all the problems that we have been having on the website, we are on a holding pattern for your lookups so that we can get everything solved and online. > >Other Counties currently in the transcription phase are: > Alameda County > Parts of Fresno County > Klamath County > Monterey County > Orange County > Parts of Plumas County > Santa Cruz County > Shasta County > Parts of Sierra County > Tulare County > >And more of Los Angeles, San Francisco, Butte, etc. > >We now have over 130 transcribers on this project and will soon be breaking into the marriage and birth records for transcription. We are in the process of designing the templates for those now. Please be patient and soon I will be announcing that all the changes are complete and the site has all the updates. > >In the meantime, we are continuing with the transcription of several counties and are rapidly acquiring more records to be transcribed, thanks to all those that have contributed to the project to help acquire the copies of these records. Donations for the project can be made out to me and sent to me at the address below. > >One more time, I am going to ask that you NOT request lookups during the transcription phase of this project. We keep getting requests and there is no way that we can comply. It will not be that long till all these are online and available for you to search. PLEASE BE PATIENT. Thank you for your understanding. > >Not much more to say right now. I ran away for a couple days to recollect my sanity and for some R + R so I can get back into this with more enthusiasm. (Sorry guys, but if you had my job, you would definitely understand the necessity for that). If you have any questions regarding the project, or suggestions or ideas, feel free to contact me and I will get back to you as soon as I possibly can. > >Till next week..... >Donna Bradley >Pre-1905 Project Coordinator >P. I am interested in any type of information regarding the Benjamin and Eliza (Owens) ROBERTSON family that lived possibly near Fillmore CA in the 1870s and 1880s. They had a son, William Davis ROBERTSON, and possibly two other sons named Robert F. and Benjamin J. Jr. Were there other siblings? The family was originally from Clark co. Indiana but moved to Illinois in 1834. Would love to learn why they moved on to California. Was it the gold rush? Any help regarding this family will be greatly appreciated. Thank you very much. Audrey

As many of you have noticed, there is a note on the website regarding some problems we were having with our tables. We have found a solution and Aaron, Steve and Laura are working on it as fast as they can, but these files are large and all have to be reformated and then uploaded again to the site. This is taking a little bit of time. Please be patient and it will be worth it. The new updated information will be not only Internet Explorer friendly, but Netscape friendly as well. I don't know about the WebTV situation yet. We will have to wait and see. > >In the meantime, the transcriptionists are working like little beavers on the continuation of the batches. Based on the information that I have, when the site is back to full capacity again the following will be added to the site as completed: > >Kern County >San Bernardino County Book Two >Humboldt County Book Two >San Luis Obispo County A-N >Possibly Santa Barbara County >Modoc County >Placer County >And about 30 batches of San Francisco County > >There could even be more by then as well. > >As you can tell, we are progressing, even though the website is being revamped for past problems. > >We have also distributed the following counties for work to begin on Transcription: > >Part of Fresno County >Shasta County >Del Norte County >Lake County >Part of Sierra County >Part of Mono County >Part of Santa Cruz County >And lots more of San Francisco County > >ALSO, although it will be awhile before we get to them, we are in the process of starting to collect marriage and birth records for some of the counties so that we will have them when the deaths are completed. > >PLEASE, do not ask for lookups. We are going as fast as we can to get these online and cannot do lookups and maintain our current speed of work. We will NOT do lookups regardless of your reasoning. Please be patient. We are working as fast as our fingers will go. > >Some BAD NEWS.... It appears as if there are no records available for El Dorado County. Rumor has it that one of the employees ran off with the records and sold them, but we have no access to them. Also, these records were NOT filmed by the LDS church either so getting that won't work either. We had heard they were at the Huntington Library, but have learned that is not the case either. We may be able to get some records, but they will be minimal at this point in time. > >Some GOOD NEWS.... We have somebody checking into the availability of the Ventura County records and should know in the not too distant future what is going on here and if we can get access. Say lotsa prayers and keep your fingers crossed. These records are also NOT filmed by the LDS church either. > >Sooooo, as you can tell, with all these changes going on, life has definitely been hectic on the pre-1905 project. Keep an eye on the site to see the changes come about. When all is said and done with the upgrades, we will also have sources listed on the site for your reference. Just be patient. Lots of good things are happening. We have gotten funding for Alameda County from the Livermore - Amador Genealogical Society and they will be helping with transcription although we will be working on it as well. We have also gotten the balance of our funding for San Francisco County from a very generous man in Australia. Also appears as we may be able to trade some info on San Francisco with another genealogical society who has done some we haven't and vice versa. Things are jumpin'. > >We have gotten Lake County and Modoc County out for transcription, Kern County done and soon to be online and naturally much more of San Francisco scheduled to go online as soon as proofing, etc gets done. We have had some questions about Sacramento County getting online, which is in the near future, but we are at the funding stage there and would like to get some of those pending online. We have about a dozen counties where the records are ordered and over 20 counties with over 30 volumes being transcribed right now. We want to get some of those done before we get another big county going (I can't find room for more files on my desk at the moment). Santa Cruz County has been funded as well and other donations toward some of the other counties which are building up their totals to cover costs. All of you have been wonderful with your donations to keep this ball rolling. > >Modoc County was transcribed by a donor an just needs to be set in our template which is happening right now so that should be up rather fast as well. Del Norte County is going out to start transcription too. And, we will be finishing up some of the other batches that have been in transcription for awhile. To put it nicely, we are working on completing some counties to get them online. > >I have to admit that I never dreamed this would move along as rapidly as it has been going. We have been at this for only two and one half months and the progress is phenomenal when you think about it. I couldn't do it without all the donors (over 90) and all the volunteers (well over 100). They are all incredible and really staying on top of all this. Never in my wildest dreams did I realize the response I would get with my first email that said "HELP! HELP! HELP!", way back in the beginning of January. You are all really wonderful and very giving and helpful people out there. All the support is incredible and the "Found" stories keep rolling in. > >To maintain this speed though, I regret to inform you, we cannot do lookups during this process. Several have asked and I have had to turn you down. We are getting them all online as fast as our little ol' fingers will go, so please be patient. > >The website <http://www.rootsweb.com/~cabf1905> has only been up for less than two months and we have had almost 7000 hits so far, so we must be sparking some interest there. Keep visiting. That is what it is there for. We will keep you updated as new areas are placed on the web. Please note that weekly, the site is updated by Steve (my hero and our computer guru) to keep you informed on the latest completed files as well as the status of all the areas we currently have "under constructions". And to keep our hero happy is our heroine, Laura who keeps all our transcribers "technically" up to snuff. A special thanks to all of you. > >Me...I just organize (or try to) all this hullaballoo, keep the books, order records and help our transcribers when they can't read some of the older, too dark or too light handwriting. You could say I am technically the "non-technical" side of the project. If you would like to help, email me. If you would like to send a donation, send it to me. If you have a question, ask me. >Hi all; >Seems that our transcriptionists want San Francisco County done as much as the rest of us. Currently in Transcription is Vol. 1, 2, 3, M, and P is just going out the door. There seems to be much confusion as to what records we are using. Some of them are death registers (just like the other counties) and some of them are Mortuary Registers. The mortuary registers give the same info that the death registers do. All registers are for the "City and County of San Francisco". > >The other counties are moving right along as well. Several more counties have their records ordered and a few more are in transcription. We have some of the smaller counties getting transcribed while we are working on the larger ones. We have gotten book two of Los Angeles County online this week and hope to have more of it online shortly. For an update on what is happening for any given county, take a look at the website <http://www.rootsweb.com/~cabf1905>. For those counties that are pending donations, look at the donor page and that will tell you which ones are open for sponsorship, funding and support. > >I would like to take a moment to thank the genealogical societies that are supporting us. Santa Barbara is funded and being transcribed by their genealogical society...all we had to do is supply the records for them. The Livermore-Amador Genealogical Society is funding and helping with the transcription in the Alameda County records. Those records have been ordered and should be in shortly. The Tehama County Gen. and Hist. Society has offered help in Tehema County and there are several others on the verge of coming through for their counties as well. > >For those of you that are considering volunteering for transcribing, there are a couple things that need to be understood. These records are over 100 years old and not always the easiest to read. They are hand written and some of them are in the older style of writing. This makes them more difficult. Also, some of the records don't copy really well. We do the best we can with what we have to make it easier. This is definitely a "Labor of Love" and those that are working on these deserve and extra pat on the back for what they are doing. Because some of the people have expected something simple to do, we have sent out some batches and then never heard from the volunteers again. If you volunteer and discover that you cannot follow through, this is not a problem, but please send the copies back to us as there are additional costs entailed in recopying the records. This can be saved. > >This is not to discourage those that wish to volunteer, but to educate them on what to expect. We have back up for what you cannot read and we help whenever we can or whenever you seem to be having a problem. Right now...we are lucky as some of the records (like the ones we are distributing right now) are extremely easy to read and transcribe. > >A special thanks goes to Steve Melton...our computer wiz, who has managed to stay on top of all the technical dealings with getting this online. He keeps the site updated weekly with periodic changes during the middle of that week. Steve, we love you and you are wonderful. > >Laura Melton, Steve's wife, has been keeping everything organized and sending out templates and instructions to all the new transcribers, as well as dealing with some of the other technical problems that have come up. In between reunions, baby showers and the like, we have managed to keep her pretty busy as well. Thank you Laura for all you do...which is way too much to even start to mention here. > >For all those that have helped to support this project, in addition to listing all of you on the donor page, I would like to say an additional "THANK YOU". Without you, this project could not come about. Between copies and postage, it is amazing how rapidly the costs add up. Donations can be sent to me. Full accountings are kept of all costs and income to the project. > >Well, will keep you updated on the new additions to the website as they come along. Thank you all for the good words, support and help. Till next week... > >Donna Bradley >Project Coordinator >P. O. Box 391368 >Anza, CA 92539-1368 > > >
