CAVE came to Marcus from Jackson County, IA with his wife, Rosa (Hanham), and his mother, Eliza, on March 1, 1885. He purchased the farm from David COULTER and wife, Lizzie COULTER, on March 7, 1885. He purchased 160 acres for a price of $5,440. It is the southeast quarter of Section No. 18 in Amherst Township. His mother, Eliza CAVE, died in May 1895. Robert and Rosa CAVE were the parents of five children. They were: Ernest, Stanley, Gladys, Ralph, and Merle. Rose died in January of 1915. Robert and his son, Merle, farmed together until Robert retired; then Merle took over the farming. Robert remained on the farm until his death in December of 1940. Merle CAVE continued with the farming, and married Deliah COOK of Madison, SD; they had seven children born to them. They are: Dorothy GABEL, of Marcus; Lucille BISHOP, of Council Bluffs; James and wife, Lorraine, of Marcus; Glenn and wife, Delores, of Cherokee; Mary Dee CARLSON, deceased; Gracie and husband, Burdette HOLTGREWE, of Le Mars; and Kenneth deceased. James began farming in 1947, and purchased the home place in 1965. Merle remained on the farm until he passed away in March of 1976, and Deliah passed away in January of 1991. James married Lorraine BAY of Granville, IA in September of 1951. They are the parents of eight children; Joyce COUGHLIN, of Sioux City; Shirley CAVE, of Richfield, MN; Gene CAVE, of Remsen; Betty WEIHE, of Vacaville, CA; Don CAVE, of Marcus; Charles CAVE, of Avoca; Dale CAVE, of Marcus; and Bev KAMPA, of St. Paul, MN. Gene and Don CAVE are farming the land now. There have been four generations of Cave's living on the farm. It is owned by James and Lorraine CAVE, who are still living on the farm.
