Hello Reuben Cave who married Catherine or Charity Haydon (Haden) abt 1797 in Kentucky had their sixth child named Merit Cave. Is this him in the 1860 Missouri Census making him born abt 1819 in Kentucky. CAVE, M. H.; Age: 41; Born: Kentucky Location: Cooper Co., Lamine Twn.; Pg. 579/165; Line: 13; Note: Occupation: brick layer. Note: Enumerated with W. E. STAPES (32 b. VA, occupation: miller) See parent Rev. Richard Cave Notes: Reference: Fillson Club Publication, by Rueben T. Durett, Volume 12, Bryants Station, Page 47 and 48.: "Rev. Richard Cave: A soldier at Bryant's Station of Fort Kentucky. Additionally, "Reuben Cave was with his father and mother at the time of the seige of Bryant Station, Kentucky when it was attacked by Indians under the renegade Simon Girty in August, 1782, (see Bryant Station: "Heroes and Heroines," by Mrs. Peyton E. Howard, 353 S. Mill St., Lexington, Kentucky). Source lists Richard and Reuben Cave in: "List of the Men Who Defended the Station Taken from Memorial Well at Bryant Station Spring." In addition to Richard Cave, his wife Elizabeth and their children: Rueben, Hannah, and Polly were present. Also present was the father and mother of Richard Cave's wife, Elizabeth Craig-Cave: Talliver Craig Sr. and Polly Hawkins-Craig." Cave who married Catherine Rush on June 21, 1835 in Monroe County is the parent of our Merritt Cave or the grandparent. Further research is required to verify this information. Children of Garland Rush and Anna McClain are: 42 i. Catherine (Kitty)4 Rush, died Unknown. She married Merit H. Cave June 21, 1835 in Monroe County, Missouri; died Unknown. Notes for Catherine (Kitty) Rush: >From Barbara Rush Jenkins, Goshen, Ohio in an e-mail sent to me on August 25, 1998: "The Affidavit of Gabriel Rush and Daniel Hendricks dated August 29, 1828 regarding the estate of John Rush, mentions Kitty as one of Garland's children. The settlement also mentions schooling for a "Catherine" and "Elizabeth." At this time, I believe that the "Catherine" and "Kitty" are one and the same person. (She may be the Catherine who married Merit H. Cave on June 21, 1835.) Documents from the Missouri Court dated February Term 1832 confirms that Betsy Rush Hawkins and Kitty and Margaret were the children of Garland. Documents also filed with the court in 1838 show that the land was sold by the heirs. These heirs being specifically named and their relationships to John Rush, therefore proving the married children of Garland Rush." (Marion County Courthouse Records, Marion County, Missouri) I found several Merrit Caves marriages online (LDS), so it was not an unusual name: Merit H. Ashworth, age 22, born in Virginia (Notes: This may have been from Merit's father dying when he was young, resulting in Merit and his sister Josephine residing with Charles F. Ashworth) Charles F. Ashworth married Martha Ann Cave, thus Josephine and Merritt are most likely siblings of Martha Ann Cave.) Note: There was a child named Charles F. Ashworth, born in June of 1864, who died on May 31, 1909, that may have been the child of the above Charles F. Ashworth, but such requires further research efforts.
