    1. [CAVE] Definition of Surname Project
    2. (From family tree) A Surname Project traces members of a family that share a common surname. Since surnames are passed down from father to son like the Y-chromosome, this test is for males taking a Y-DNA test. Females do not carry their father’s Y-DNA and acquire a new surname by way of marriage, so the tested individual must be a male that wants to check his direct paternal line (father’s father’s father’s…) with a Y-DNA12, Y-DNA37, or Y-DNA67 marker test. Females who would like to check their direct paternal line can have a male relative with this surname order a Y-DNA test. Females can also order an mtDNA test for themselves such as the mtDNA or the mtDNAPlus test and participate in an mtDNA project.

    1. Re: [CAVE] Cave dna update
    2. Sue Ellen and Clara: The Cave Family Historical Society has chosen Family Tree dna to be the testing service. That organization is by far the largest testing service. I was tested by it for the Walker dna group. Familytreedna.com has a lot of information. They show a Cave project, but they apparently do not have a website like most dna study groups do. I found Hugh Cave's name through contacting the project administrator. One thing you can always do, incidentally, is type in your other family names to see if they already have a project. For example I typed in Mallory, and it showed that so far all southern Mallorys are connected, but not of the same Mallory family as the northern group. You can often find that someone who represents your common ancestor has already tested. Or you can find a cousin with that surname to test. Luckily Hugh and the CFHS have already started a surname study group. Most of the work is already done for us "yanks," and we have a number of English testees. In addition, members of surname study groups get reduced pricing on testing from familytreedna You can start out measuring 12 markers...or 37..or even 64. I think the discounted rates would be $99 for 12 markers...$189 for 37. Almost everyone involved in dna testing for any length of time recommends at least 37 markers. It can tell you a lot more, particularly as more and more people test. Michael Walker In a message dated 2/17/2007 9:26:41 AM Eastern Standard Time, [email protected] writes: I have no idea how you would go about doing the DNA testing. Where and how you would go about getting the testing done? Is it done in a regular lab? How expensive is it? In what form do you get the results? A written form? 3. Good Morning Sue Ellen! This Cave DNA comparing really sounds fascinating! I haven't been able to get any further on my Cave genealogy search than back to James Cave, born between 1800 and 1805. I have the "Genealogy of the Cave Family" by Byron Cave of Lancaster, Ohio that I think is your family line. If we are connected to that line, as near as I can tell, it was before the information in that book. Are you getting settled in your new home - and is it feeling more like home now? We would love to have you back in Ohio any time! Do I remember that your husband is a pilot? How old are your kids now? We had such a mild December, but January and February are making up for the cold, snow and ice! I think I've heard that Kansas has had a cold winter too? I have no idea how you would go about doing the DNA testing. Where and how you would go about getting the testing done? Is it done in a regular lab? How expensive is it? In what form do you get the results? A written form? Then how is it compared to the others? How do you get it to the proper sources for comparison? I guess I really don't know enough about it to ask questions! I'd love to hear from you again! Clara Cave On Sat, 17 Feb 2007 00:45:31 -0600 "S&R Ash" <[email protected]> writes: > That is wonderful. 1. [CAVE] Cave dna update
    2. Updating the earlier e-mail about starting a family surname study group... There already exists a Cave dna surname study group. It is handled by the Cave Family History Society, located in London. I emailed the President and founder of that organization, Hugh Cave. He is VERY interested in having US Caves join the project. Apparently, according to familytreedna, twenty one Caves have already tested. According to the Cave Family History Society website, they have eight results back...five of which connect to the South Leister branch, which goes back twenty four generations. One is from Canada. The CFHS website may be out of date, and they may have more results back. It would be fascinating to connect our American Cave lines with some of those English lines already tested. Michael Walker

    1. Re: [CAVE] Cave DNA
    2. Hi Cave cousins: I broached this subject on the list about a year ago and thought I might try again. Many, many people are now using simple new technology to get their y-dna tested for genealogical purposes. A lot of families have formed "surname research groups" as well. Basically, males carry their y-dna male to male, son to son, in an unbroken chain. This y-dna can be measured by "markers"..which mutate every now and then but generally remain the same generation to generation. This means that if you are a male with a certain surname, and your y-dna basically matches another male with the same surname, you are from the same male line. Of course if you are not a male, or you are interested in other family lines, you could find a brother, cousin or other close relative who could test, and their results would be that line's y-dna signature. I just looked at the website of one of the largest testing services and it appears that at least fourteen Cave men have already had their y-dna tested. I believe that most of these testees are English. If we were able to get some of the American Caves to test, we could most likely accomplish at least two major goals that have eluded Cave researchers for decades: 1) To connect the American Cave lines to British lines. 2) To prove or disprove the theory that all of the early Cave families in Virginia (i.e., Benjamin the Burgess, Robert, John...even Mary Cave who married John Echols) were from the same family and thus probably from the same immigrant ancestor. I have tested myself...it is easy and painless. No blood, just a swabbing of the cheek. It is also very private...the dna collected is tested by universities and is only done for family research purposes..in other words there are no medical testing or other issues involved. Besides being part of the Walker project (there are over 300 Walker testees, which have divided into some thirty lines and many "orphans"), I've found cousins to test on Townsend, Stapleton, Wingfield and other lines. Many interesting breakthroughs have occurred. With the relative rarity of the Cave surname, and the fact that already fourteen mainly British Caves have tested, I think this would be an interesting project to pursue. Michael Walker .
