1. Re: [CAVE] Change of Email Address
2. Linda Chambliss
3. Thank you. I enjoy reading the CAVE memos, and believe you and I corresponded years ago on Prodigy? Anyway, my maternal grandfather was Joseph William Cave, born around 1899 in Champaign County, Ohio. He had one brother (Daniel, who died in California) and two sisters (Pauline, who never married) and one whose name I can't remember. I often see a Joseph Cave from Champaign County mentioned in the CAVE list messages, but he seems to be a generation or two back from my grandfather. My mother's parents were divorced when she was 4 years old, and she has never been willing to speak of his family too much. If you would like the list of my mother's descendants, I can provide that to you also. Thanks for any information you might have. 3. Hi, My CAVE ancestry is uncertain. John Richard BLACKWELL CAVE was born 1 Sep 1866 in Leicester (from his birth certificate). His father is not named. His mother was Emma CAVE. I suspect his father was called BLACKWELL, since that name is in capitals on his birth certificate. I don't know for certain which Emma Cave was his mother. If this crosses with anyone else's research I'd be most interested. regards Richard

1. [CAVE] roll call
2. Gordon Seyffert
3. I have two descents from the Orange County, VA, family. 1. male line: ? David CAVE Sr., d. 1756, Lay reader at the old Orange Church near Ruckersville, per Slaughter ("The Cave Family," pg. 123), who names a son Robert in his will (see discussion below). Is David Sr. a brother to Benjamin Sr.? Per W.E. Brockman, “Orange Deed Septmber 22, 1768, Benjamin Cave to Samuel Brockman, 13 pounds for part of tract Brockman bought of Abraham Mayfield which said Cave recovered, gave him good title to 176 acres.” Mayfield was David’s son-in-law, as shown by his will. ? Robert CAVE. Named in David’s will, he could just as easily be an uncle to the Robert named below. I’m going to arbitrarily attach my Robert Cave of Cavesville here (on the theory that four Roberts could easily have been compressed into three -- and the exact relationship to Benjamin Sr. misrepresented -- in the “modern” remembrance of the ancestry by my great grandfather), principally based on the following: (1) the statement by Catherine McClellan (an early Cave genealogist disparaged by VA Cave genealogist Col. "Charlie" McCall as having an ‘overvaulting’ desire to establish kinship) that “Dr. Robert Cave of St. Louis, dec’d., once told someone that he was descended from Robert Cave of Orange Co., a brother of Benjamin” [See: ltr. of 13 Feb. 1929 to Rella Bright Evans, West. Hist. Mss. Coll., U. of Mo.], and (2) that, following the suggestion of Mrs. Orville DeView (a TN collaborator in the Cave research of Mrs. Dale M. Thompson of Kansas City MO -- also a genealogist of the Cowherd family), it would seem that David’s apparent land holdings would fit with the Robert Cave who established “Ellerslie” at Lahore, Orange Co., VA. Robert CAVE of "Cavesville." b. abt. 1782; md. 1806 Orange Co. to Lucy BRADLEY, d/o Geo. Sr.; d. abt. Sep. 1852 Orange Co. A Cavesville tavern license, Orange Co., 28 July 1817 & renewed 26 May 1828, is documented in the Sparacio's book, "Pamunkey Neighbors." “Cave’s P.O.” appears on a ca. 1850 Lewis von Buchholtz state map. It is about 1/4 of the way from Ruckersville to Barboursville, on the road. That puts it on present U.S. Hwy. 33 about 1 to 1-1/2 miles E of Ruckersville, just beyond Rte. 610 (the antecedent of which appears as a trail on this same map). And that, in turn, suggests that Cavesville was no more than a mile W of the county line, but definitely in present Greene Co. In 1820, Robt. Cave’s land bordered that of Mary Rucker, and was near the lands of Joel & John Rucker, and Thomas Eddins. When her estate was settled in 1825, it was done by Robert & Joseph Cave, and Thomas Eddins. Her coffin had been made by Wm. Eddins, and her attending physician had been Dr. Whitelaw. Her estate had 3 gallons of whiskey for sale. [Orange Co., VA, Will Book 6, pgs. 66-7 & 402-3.] [Despite my hypothetical linkage of Robert (~1782-1852) to David's Robert and to David CAVE Sr., others have maintained, even quite recently, that this line descends from Benjamin Cave Sr., the Burgess.] Robert Preston CAVE of "Ellerslie." b. 18 Sep. 1814; md. 1836 Orange Co. to Sarah Frances LINDSAY, d/o Reuben; d. 1 Jan. 1861 Orange Co. His father was named in his marriage license. We also have a copy of the father’s permission for his son to marry; it is dated from “Cavesville.” Although Cavesville has not been linked, to my knowledge, to a specific place, it is known that when Landon Lindsay sued his relatives over an estate, he asked the Sheriff of Greene County [In Dec. 1838, it was newly created from Orange Co.] to produce “Robert Cave Jr., and Saley, his wife,...to answer a Bill in Chancery....” Then, in depositions for the Lindsay case, one is taken in Sept. 1841 from Pritchett’s Tavern in Stanardsville, Greene Co. I wonder if the tavern and the village might have originated in Robert Cave’s tavern at Cavesville, 1817-28 ? In 1832, Robert Cave purchased a tract of just under 340 acres of land, upon which he built "Ellerslie." My personal suspicion is that he would not have acquired the means to buy this land and build the mansion he did through farming alone, but that his father had established a tavern on the road leading from Orange C.H. through then-western Orange (now Greene) County to the mountains and beyond. The selling of whiskey and the renting of shelter for the night could have provided the "stake" that Robert P. needed. [“Those CAVEs never darkened [the] door of Montebello and never were interested in it.” --Col. Chas. McCall to Mrs. Orville DeView, 3 Feb. ‘60] Rev. Robert C. CAVE, a/k/a Dr. Cave. b. 13 Feb. 1843 Orange Co.; md. 15 Jan. 1863 Richmond to Sarah Frances DANIEL, d/o Wm. Travers Sr.; d. 23 June 1923 St. Louis, MO. 1. [CAVE] My earliest CAVE ancestor
2. Roger Robison
3. My earliest known CAVE ancestor is Thomas Cave Sr of Prince George's County, MD, circa 1750's. His wife was named Jane, but her maiden name is unknown. Their known children include Thomas Cave Jr, who married first Mary Brightwell and then Elizabeth Peirce; Samuel, who married Elizabeth Lowry, Sarah, who married John Adam Rollings; and Jane, who married James McFarland. It is possible that two other women with the surname Cave who married in Prince George's County, MD, in the 1780's are also the children of Thomas and Jane Cave: an Elizabeth, who married Henry Lee, and a Sarah, who married Leonard Eddis [sic]. (I suspect the groom to be Leonard Edelen.) Shortly before his death, Thomas Cave Sr moved to Stafford County, VA, where he appears on the tax list of 1787 with Thomas Cave Jr listed as tithable. His will was probated in Prince George's County, MD, on April 10, 1787. The following year, his widow Jane Cave was listed on the tax roll in Fauquier County, VA, with Thomas Cave Jr listed as tithable. Jane is last recorded in Fauquier County, VA, on the tax list of 1791. The various children appear in subsequent census records in Fauquier, Shenandoah (now Warren), and Rockbridge counties in VA. Unfortunately, I have been unable to connect my Cave line to any of the other Cave lines in VA or MD, but I suspect there must be one. Roger Robison San Antonio, TX

3. Hi, My CAVE connection is to an Olivia CAVE. The 1860 census record for Olivia suggests that she might have been born in Missouri around 1815, but I have nothing further to substantiate this. Olivia CAVE's 1st marriage (I believe) was to George L. LANGSTON in Boone County, Missouri, in June of 1841. I believe that Olivia later married Jesse McCURLEY in Cooper County, Missouri, in September of 1851. Jesse and Olivia McCURLEY appear in the 1860 census of Barry County, Missouri. My suspicion (based on limited circumstantial evidence) is that this Olivia CAVE may have been a daughter of John CAVE, and an older sister of Henry, William and Marcus CAVE. Anyone on this list have an interest in this CAVE family? 1. Re: [CAVE] Who is YOUR oldest CAVE Ancestor?
2. I believe Sue Ellen means "oldest" in terms of "earliest known." Are you a descendant of Benjamin Cave, Burgess of Orange County, Virginia? In this case his ancestry has not been proven back to the English Caves, as many have noted before. Or do you have a different Cave line, proven back through Orange to England? Michael Walker In a message dated 3/4/2007 12:27:39 AM Eastern Standard Time, [email protected] writes: My name is Kristen Johnson Ingram. I'm a professional writer. My Cave line is from Pickwell, Leicester England, Orange County Virginia, and Boone County Kentucky. The last Cave in my line was Mary Ann Cave, daughter of Taylor Cave and Elizabeth Taylor Holton; she married Richard Piles/Pyles in Mason, KY. Their daughter, Ella TrueBlood Piles, was born in 1853; she married Henry Clay Metcalfe in Carlisle, KY

**************************************
AOL now offers free email to everyone. 1. [CAVE] Changing And Updating Your Email Addresses
2. Ronald
3. Greetings to all CAVE list members: "Just a little reminder for all our members" With one big relocation move across country behind me & one ahead of me in the next yr, it has brought to mind the importance of updating, checking, and posting corrections to all queries and messages we have posted on the Internet. It is important that you do this if you dont want your contacts to have messages returned with < Sorry, UNKNOWN EMAIL ADDRESS > We all take time to send change of address to our regular mail service, so dont forget this same courtesy for email messages. Its so disappointing to see someone's query posted who may be holding the key to our family search, only to have your contact message (you carefully and excitedly send out) returned. Most often there is no way to find this person any other way as they did not post an address or use their full name or location. If you are just beginning your research it would pay to keep a simple list of where you have posted queries or messages. There are so many places its nearly impossible to remember them if you dont have some sort of list index. If you are already into the posting of queries as deeply as I have been its time we took an inventory of what and where we have messages. Do we need to update them? Do they still stand as we wrote them several years ago? Make a list for future reference. Another thing I have been doing is to notify others of a persons death who has posted queries and there is no answer to any one contacting that persons email. I have a cousin who died who was very active in genealogy but her family never took the time to note her death at any of the locations where she has standing queries. I doubt it ever occurred to them to do so since it was her passion and not a shared family hobby as is the case so often in genealogy. I had two folks ask me why she had not answered them. She had been ill a long time and we had not been in touch for a couple of years. I found her listed in the SS Index. That is when I began notifying the sites she is deceased. One site changed the contact person on her query to me and stated that she was deceased. I would be happy to help them if I could since we shared the same ancestor. With our ever changing computer world we need to be alert to our use of the Internet when we use it as a major tool in research. Someone may be reading your query you forgot about with an old email address. They may have that lost connection or photos you have been looking for. Dont miss the chance to connect due to outdated addresses. Good Hunting! Sue Ellen Cave Ash your list manager ~ who has had many contacts from overseas this year due to my email address and queries being updated.

1. Re: [CAVE] Rev. William D. Cave
2. Hello, Cousin! I am twice descended from Benj Cave Sr of Orange County, Old VA, through his sons Wm and Richard. Benj Sr. was NOT the son of Wm Cave and Ann Stonehouse of England. Benj Sr. parents are still unknown. This misconception about Benj Sr. has been perpetrated by a commissioned genealogy that was incorrect. Our common ancestors were Wm Cave Jr. and Margaret "Peggy" Threlkeld --- I am from their son Uriel and his second cousin Susan Rice --- have you any more info on Margaret Threlkeld's death and burial? She died in Elizabethtown, KY according to my records, but I have no confirmation. There is extensive info on the Threlkelds, back to John of England. Do you have the book Threlkeld Genealogy?
