I believe the two lived in Russia for a long time. I find Jane back in Cambridge as a widow in 1910, but still don't know the first name of her husband, or exactly where they were this whole time, or when/where either of them died. Does anyone know? John Cave migrated to the USA (New York) from County Monaghan in 1850 at the age of 22. I have been able to trace him from NY to Illinois, then Missouri, and finally Kansas, in the 1880's. I'm sure that he died in western Kansas (Haskell Co.) but have not been able to find his grave or any records. I do have other Cave relatives who are buried in Haskell County, but none of them are still living. My mother was a Cave. I currently have Cave relatives living in the Dallas area, but when I talked to them they have nothing to offer geneologically. Sorry I can't be of more help. 3. Amy, I've learned a lot more about my ancestors since leaving that message in 2000. My great grandparents were from England and came to the US in the late 1860's. They resided in NY, then Missouri, then came to Texas. They settled first in Parker County, where my grandfather was born, then moved on to Kaufman County. They are buried in Kaufman County. My great grandfather was born in about 1827 in Bodicote, Oxfordshire, England. I've visited his parents' graves there. Their ancestors lived in Gloustershire. We traced the oldest known to Owlpen in the 1600's. Still, I always wonder if they went to Missouri for a purpose, as many Caves ended up there. What more can you provide and we'll see if there is a link. I actually connected with a distant cousin whose great-grandfather was my great-grandfather's brother. 1. Re: [CAVE] Jim Cave's msg. on The Tyrrell Chart
    2. Gordon Seyffert
    3. Kudos for this statement, Jim! I knew Mrs. Dale M. (Dorothy) Thompson, and she was a diligent and honest researcher. What you say is certainly true. If something CAN be said for the Tyrrell chart, it is that it was my first introduction to genealogy. When I was about 10 or 12, my mother opened a Chinese chest, similar to a trunk but more decorative, that she kept in a corner of the master bedroom in our home. She pulled out a typescript copy of this chart to show me how I was, she alleged, something on the order of 32nd or 33rd in direct descent from William the Conquerer. But it didn't stop there; it proceeded to trace back to someone living on the shores of the Black Sea (or some such) roughly a couple of thousand years ago. It was all very "sketchy" and there were no sources cited, but the seed of genealogy was planted then and there. When my maternal grandmother died in 1975 -- and I was given some news clippings relating to my great-grandfather Rev. Robt. C. Cave, of Orange County and St. Louis -- I started researching and have done so ever since. But there was something else in that trunk that I still have: a 400- year-old English parchment deed, with seals, that was peddled to my grandfather, Edward Powell Cave, by a dealer in documents from Cleveland. I mentioned this in my post to CAVE-L on 3 June 2006. Here is a portion of that information: "J. C. Pearson of Cleveland, OH, was a dealer in documents in 1937. He had in his possession a parchment deed which he described as follows: "'It is a deed in Latin dated the last day of December 1602 by which HENRY CAVE of Ingersbie in the County of Leicester, Armiger, (having coat armor) and BRIANUS CAVE of Ingersbie his son and heir apparent conveyed to William Clarke of Hungerton, laborer, a cottage in Hungerton where the said Wm. Clarke and Margery Beamont now dwell and a croft adjacent, for ten pounds and ten shillings. All the boundaries are given. "'Henry Cave and his son Brian are shown in the Visitations of Leicestershire published by the Harleian Society. Brian married Francisca, daughter of Sir Erasmus Driden, and in 1619 had seven children, the oldest 16 years of age. There are fine signatures of Henry and Brian, the surname in Henry's autograph being written as a monogram.'" The William Cave md. to Ann Stonehouse (to whom the Tyrrell genealogist tried to tie Benjamin the Burgess) was, from my CAVE of Ingarsby information, a second cousin three times removed of this Brian Cave, son of Henry, mentioned in the paragraph above. The father in the deed is Henry of Ingarsby (1552-aft 1602), who is the son of Brian of Ingarsby (~1509-1592), who is in turn the son of Richard Cave of Stanford. I wish that Dorothy Thompson might have found the documentation of the Orange County CAVEs for which she searched, but perhaps something may yet be found in British archives that will shed light on the matter. Meanwhile, I'm appreciative of those CAVE genealogists who are honest about what we don't know! Gordon Seyffert in Kansas City, MO

    1. [CAVE] Ancestors of Benjamin the Burgess
    2. Jim Cave
    3. Be careful about the ancestors of Benjamin the Burgess. Please read the following: The Tyrrell Chart and The Ancestry of Benjamin Cave, Burgess of Orange County, Virginia The following is a verbatim excerpt from a letter written November 23, 1968 by Mrs. Dale M. (Dorothy) Thompson of Kansas City, MO. Mrs. Thompson, now deceased, was of the line of Benjamin the Burgess and sought for years to determine his ancestry without conclusive results. She has some rather negative remarks concerning the author of the Tyrrell Chart and his claim to have determined that the parents of Benjamin the Burgess were Rev. William Cave, Canon of Windsor and his wife Anna Stonehouse. The excerpt... "You asked about the Tyrrell chart. Early in my CAVE researches, I kept hearing of this genealogical chart, which seemed to be so much venerated and quoted from. Later I learned that some early Cave-descendant, in the line of Benjamin's daughter Hannah Mallory, had employed an English genealogist named Tyrrell to trace the family. Tyrrell wrote a book on his own lines which is in the New York Genealogical Library, and he appears to have been a person of some reputation, but I regret to say I think he was too willing to please his patron. I finally got a photocopy of the chart from the Alderman Library at the University of Virginia. It gave the long line of Cave descent from the Conquest (which is probably as accurate as such things can be at this date, though it names only the heir or a few brothers, in each generation, and is not by any means complete). It brought Benjamin down from a branch of the family which lived at Pickwell in Leicestershire, stating that Benjamin was the son of the Rev. William Cave, who was a Canon of Windsor and a Chaplain to Charles II. This man was real enough; I have several of his books, and one written in collaboration with Jeremy Taylor. His prefaces are delightful, and he was a most learned man, writing mostly about early Church history. I should like so much to claim the Rev. William Cave! ... "The regrettable fact however, is that Benjamin the Burgess appears to have been born in 1703 (deposition in Orange Co.) when the Rev. Wm. was 76 years old (he died in 1713) and his wife Anna Stonehouse was dead (she had died in 1691). Presumably Tyrrell found an eminent man whose death-date might have made it possible for him to have been Benjamin's father, if the matter were not inquired into carefully. What I blame Tyrrell for which condemns him utterly, is that he indicated on the chart that proof of Benjamin's parentage was in the will of the Rev. William Cave. After years, working through the Society of Genealogists in London, I succeeded in getting a photocopy of the full will of the Rev. William, from the Prerogative Court of Canterbury. There is not the slightest excuse for what Tyrrell said. The will is long and detailed; he mentions daughters, a deceased son Ralph, a bequest to families of indigent ministers - it goes on for pages, and it is quite readable - it is not necessary to be able to read the "Court hand" to get it all. Tyrrell simply collected his fee and made his client happy, but I deplore his historical conscience and his common honesty."

    3. Linda, I remember this well. Let me do some looking up again to see if I ever determined where he fit in. I lost all my JUNO emails one day (still dont know what I did) and our exchange of inf was still on there. There were two younger Josephs near the same age. Know I looked up a lot of records on them. I will get back to you on this...anyone else know where this Joseph belongs jump right in here as well! :) Sue Ellen Cave Ash

    1. Re: [CAVE] Who is YOUR oldest CAVE Ancestor?
    2. Robert Pittenger
    3. My oldest Cave Ancestors in the U.S. begin with Stephen A. Cave (1810), born in Leicestershire Co., England. He immigrated to the USA where he married Mary Ann McCarty (1820), b. Ireland. They lived briefly in Maryland and Pennsylvania and the moved to Indiana where they lived for most of the rest of their lives. They had 12 children. Their son Henry Clay Cave (1851) was born in Jennings County, Indiana. He married Julia Ann Plake (1859) and they moved to Labette County where they had 7 children. I am descended from their daughter Rosalind Eleanor Cave (1886) who married Clyde C Pittenger (1886) in 1908. There were 2 sons of Henry Clay Cave, but they had no children. This information is well authenticated and verified by me. Going back to my oldest ancestors, who were in England, I would return to Stephen A. Cave (1810) who was born in Swinford, Leicestershire to Charles (1765) and his wife Sarah Choice. Beyond this I must rely on the records from the Cave Family History Society. They would indicate that Charles' parents were John (1744) and Ursula Jackson; then Thomas ( 1700) and his second wife, Mary Smith; then Richard of Walcot (1654) and Ann Brown; then Thomas of Walcot (1612) and Abigail Lord; then Thomas (1583) and Joan Parberry; then Thomas of Walcot and Elizabeth Mawbee. This is extending my ancestry way past any information that I have verified and so I believe I had better stop. I know of no evidence connecting my Caves to those Caves who originally settled in Virginia and who apparently comprise most of the Caves living in the USA today.. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Ronald " <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Saturday, March 03, 2007 8:35 PM Subject: [CAVE] Who is YOUR oldest CAVE Ancestor?
