The last name in your message was a Claude M. Cave. My grandfather was named Claude M. Cave. I know that he was born in Missouri, around 1887, moved to Kansas as a child, and died in Dodge City, KS, in December of 1959. According to your message, your CMC was born in MO in 1876, so apparently they are not the same person. It is my understanding that the Cave family I come from originated on Co. Monaghan, Ireland. A John Cave migrated to the USA in 1850, according to ship records. Do you have any further information on your Cave family background? If so, I would love to know about it. 3. This is great!!! All of your info fits with mine. John Huston Caves Married Sarah Ann Galliher and other variations of spelling. My line comes from their son, Thomas W. Caves. married to Matilda Ward. Did not know that Jane's Maiden name was Ireland. I have looked extensively into Sarah Ann Golliher's Indian Heritage as I live in Oklahoma and have close access to the Indian records. It seems so far that they were never excepted to the Dawes Roll which is the final roll. However an interesting item that comes out is that is that their proper last name was Martin and not Galliher as always listed. Still can't figure out that one. Will be very glad to exchange info. 3. Thanks for the update That is exciting! I am still trying to locate a CAVE on my line. Have recently found 7 brothers in a Shenandoah line who may be willing to be tested. That would be one large family line to prove up. Not my close line but would be a good one to use for matching my branch. I have a tooth of my Daddys, I wonder if they could use it... 2. Checking familytreedna.com today, they have now tested twenty-five male Caves. Hugh Cave of the Cave Family History Society has not published any results, and as of yet no website exists. At least we have a large number of English lines with which to connect, including I believe several that have their Cave genealogies back to the thirteenth century. 1. Re: [CAVE] Who is YOUR oldest CAVE Ancestor?
    2. Michael, after reviewing my notes, it appears that I don't have any specfic that details his birth. I have included some notes by Jim Cave about this John CAVE. Subject: [CAVE] Re: JOHN CAVE AND ELIZABETH ANDREWS MID 1600'S Date: Fri, 5 Dec 2003 6:45:43 AM EST From: [email protected] To: [email protected] I put the following together with help from Dorothy Brown Thompson now deceased ANCESTORS OF ROBERT (17??-1755) AND OTHER CONTEMPORARY CAVE'S >From the following records it can be presumed that John Cave , carpenter of King and Queen County, owned land in Stafford County and died there in 1720 or 1721. Further, that he had sons John Jr. and David: That John Jr. died without heirs before 1748. That the mother of these sons was a daughter of George Andrews which George owned lots in Marlborough Town, Stafford County. There is also some basis for believing that William Cave (d.1742) of Stafford Co. was also a son of John Cave since David released the land that had reverted to him after John Jr. died to Keene Withers who was married to William Cave's daughter. Her father William had died before the land transfer in 1748. *1707/08/05 John Cave Stafford John Cave of King and Queen Co., a carpenter of King and Queen County, buys from Sampson Darrell, of Glocester Co., 300 acres of land in Stafford Co. lying and being on the south side of Potomack Creek and bounded as follows: Northerly in Potomack Creek, Easterly with the lands of John Gorvey, Thomas Gregg, Wm. Waught, Southerly and westerly with the lands of Giles Travers; the said 300 acres of land being the one half of 600 acres sold by Capt. Wm Heaberd to Capt. John Norgrove by deed dated the 6th day of March 1667. Stafford Co. Deed Book Z, p384 Darrell release to Cave recorded 8 Oct 1707. *1721 John Cave Stafford "John Cave's will was dated August 6, 1714 and proved in 1721 at Stafford County Court; it was recorded in now lost Will Book "K", page 2. He devised 200 acres of land on Axton's Run and adjoining the property of John Gowry and Giles Travers to his son John Cave but he "died so that the above mentioned land fell and reverted to" David Cave of Orange County who was joined by his wife Sarah in conveying the said property to Keene Withers of Hamilton Parish, Prince William County, on September 12, 1748." Quote above from The Register of Overwharton Parish by George H. S. King Note: Keene Withers was the husband of Elizabeth Cave, only surviving child of William Cave dec'd. William may have been next in line after John Jr dec'd to inherit John 's(d.1721) land so David passed it on. *The following from the papers of Mrs. Dorothy Brown Thompson: Deed of Lease and Release dated 12 & 13 Sept. 1748 from David Cave & Sarah, His wife of St. Thos. Parish, Orange , to Cain Withers of Hamilton Parish, Prince William Co.- "Whereas John Cave of Stafford Co. dec'd. did by his last will and testament dated 6 Aug. 1714 give and bequeath to his son John Cave 200 acres of land lying and being in Stafford County in Overwharton Parish bounding upon Axton's Run and upon the lands of John Gore and upon the lands of Giles Travers and the sd John Cave, son of the testator John, died so that the above mentioned land fell and reverted to the said David Cave party to these presents" Wit:John Hamilton, Charles Waller, Anthony Murray Recorded Stafford Court 13 Sept. 1748... *1737/07/27 John Cave Stafford John Cave sells 3 lots in Marlborough town, Stafford Co to John Mercer. This transaction is recorded in John Mercer's Land Book as follows: "This indenture made the twenty seventh day of July in the year of our Lord God one thousand seven hundred and twenty seven between John Cave of the county of Orange of the one part and John Mercer of the county of Stafford of the other part witnesseth that the said John Cave for and in consideration of the sum of five shillings sterling to him in hand paid by the said John Mercer the receipt whereof is here by acknowledged, hath granted bargained and sold and by these present doth grant bargain and sell unto the said John Mercer all that and those three lots or half acres of land suitable lying and being in Marlboroughtown in the said county of Stafford known and distinguished in the platt and survey of the said town made by Theodorick Bland surveyor of the said county and recorded among the records of the said county by the number s (8),! (9) and (11) which were made over and conveyed by Matthew Thompson and John Withers gent. Feoffees of the said town to George Andrews grandfather of the said John Cave whose heir the said John Cave is. The above mentioned five shillings sterling being first paid. Thomas Staine Rawleigh Chinn William Cave James Mercer At Above held for Stafford County te 13th 7ber 1737 the within lease from John Cave to John Mercer was proved by the oathes of William Cave and Rawleigh Chinn two of the subscribing witnesses thereto and admitted to record. Test. H. Taylor" In addition to John Jr., William and David mentioned above as possible sons of John Cave and ____Andrews, there were other contemporaries in Stafford, Spotsylvania and later Orange and Culpeper Counties who may also have been sons. There were Benjamin, Robert, Thomas and Joseph. David, Benjamin and Robert in particular were closely associated with one another in the public records between 1720 and 1750 and gave sons these names. For example David named sons David, Benjamin and Robert : Benjamin named sons Benjamin, John, William, and David: Robert named sons Robert, John and William. In considering Benjamin who was to become Burgess from Orange County, as a son of John Cave, one must reject the widely held premise that Benjamin was the immigrant ancestor. For many years a chart assembled by an English genealogist named Tyrrell was accepted as truth. This chart showed Benjamin as the immigrant son of Rev. William Cave of Windsor, chaplain to Charles II, and his wife Anna Stonehouse Cave. Rev. William Cave's will was cited in support . Mrs. Dorothy Brown Thompson, long time Cave family researcher , says in her papers: "In 1957, through the London Society of Genealogists, I succeeded [Dorothy Brown Thompson] in getting a photocopy of this will from the Perogative Court of Canterbury. The will mentions daughters, a grandson, a deceased son Ralph, but not any mention of Benjamin or any living son. The will is long, detailed, meticulous. It seems most unlikely that he would have omitted to mention a living son even if provided for, even if estranged. At any rate, he did not; so Tyrrell's reference was false. Benjamin' deposition, 1758 showshe was born 1703, which further disproves this parentage: Anna (Stonehouse) Cave died 1691." *According to George H.S. King in a report to Mrs D. B. Thompson 18 April 1967, the deposition which establishes the birthyear of Benjamin the Burgess is filed in the suit papers Crosthwait vs Crosthwait, Orange Co. VA Judgement File #17, Papers of June Court 1759. According to the report the deposition reads in part as follows: "Benjamin Cave Gent. Sworn & Examined in the suit Depending in the County Court of Orange between Abraham Crosthwait Plaintiff and William Crosthwait Defendant, in the presense and by Consent of the partis _ Deposeth and Saith, That he is about 55 years or thereabouts... That about the time of Timothy Crosthwait purchasing the land in question from Hezekiah Rhodes... &c: Benja, Cave **John Cave (16__-1720) may or may not have been the immigrant. Records such as Cavaliers and Pioneers and the St. Stephens Parish Register indicate that there were earlier Cave's who could have been a prior generation. -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] To: [email protected] Sent: Sat, 14 Apr 2007 11:18 PM Subject: Re: [CAVE] Who is YOUR oldest CAVE Ancestor? 1. [CAVE] My Earliest Known Cave Ancestor
    2. My oldest (earliest known) Cave ancestor was Mary Cave, who married John Echols (Eccles/Eckholls/Axol) Mary Cave was probably born ca 1665, as her children were born from the 1680's to the early 1700's. John Echols was a Quaker and large land owner in King and Queen County, Virginia. According to John and Mary's great grandson, Milner Echols, who wrote a history of the family in 1850, "John Echols married a tall redheaded woman named Mary Cave and by her had five sons and three daughters." Although there are a few small errors, Milner Echols' account of John and Mary's descendants is largely correct, as proven by wills, deeds, and other primary records. In fact, John Echols lived adjoining John Cave, and the two patented land together in several deeds in 1703, a fact not known by Milner Echols but which suggests a very close relationship between John Cave and John Echols. This John Cave was the same "carpenter" (i.e. architect in today's terminology) who married a Miss Andrews as well as late in life Elizabeth Travers, and whose will was proven 1721 in Stafford County, Virginia. This John Cave is the ancestor of many people on this list, and I believe all of the Caves in this area of Virginia were most likely related. I would think that Mary Cave who married John Echols was the sister of John Cave who died ca. 1721 in Stafford, however it is possible she was this John's daughter. (As has been noted elsewhere there is no way that Mary Cave could have been John Cave's daughter by his much younger wife Elizabeth Travers). There was a John Cave claimed as a headright by John Foxhall for land in Stafford County in 1667. This indicates a John Cave was probably of age, in the Virginia colony by 1665, old enough to start parenting children such as Mary Cave. There was also a David Cave claimed as a headright in 1669, indicating that David Cave was in the Virginia Colony by 1667. David Cave signed a petition as one of the "Inhabitants and Housekeepers" of St. Stephen's Parish in 1683. St. Stephen's Parish was part of what became King and Queen County, where John Cave and John Echols held land twenty years later in 1703. David Cave would therefore be a possible father of John Cave and Mary Cave as well. The children of John Echols and Mary Cave were: 1. MARY ELEANOR ECHOLS, b. about 1690 King William County, Virginia; d. Bef. 02 November 1771, Halifax County, Virginia; m. NICHOLAS GILLENTINE, about 1714, Virginia; b. about 1676, Thurland Castle, England. 2. JOHN ECHOLS, b. about 1695, Virginia; d. 20 December 1750, Beaufort County, North Carolina. 3. ABRAHAM ECHOLS, b. 1700, Comfort, Lee County, Virginia; d. 03 October 1749, Halifax County, Virginia m. SARAH HUBBARD, great grandfather of the Hon. Allen Taylor Caperton, Confederate States Senator and United States Senator from West Virginia, and of the Hon. Gen. John Echols, CSA, member of the Virginia Legislature and Confederate General, whose son, the Hon. Edward Echols, served as Lieutenant Governor of Virginia, and President of the Virginia Senate, 4. WILLIAM ECHOLS, b. 1702, Virginia; d. Bet. 08 April - 16 May 1771, Halifax County, Virginia; m. SARAH TURNER; d. February 1778, Halifax County, Virginia. William Echols was the father in law of the Hon. Daniel Williams, a founder of Nashville, Tennessee who served as its first Sheriff, and of Capt. Vardee McBee, Officer in the Revolution, and grandfather of Hon. Capt. Sampson Williams, who like his father served as Sheriff of Davidson County, Tennessee, member of the Tennessee House of Representatives and namesake of Williamsburg, Tennessee, and Lt. Col. Wright Williams, another early Sheriff, 5. ANNE ECHOLS, b. 1703, Virginia; d. 1746, Amelia County, Virginia; m. GEORGE MARCHBANKS of the landed family of Marjoribanks of Ratho, Scotland, captured at the battle of Preston who fled Scotland during the Jacobite Rebellion, had plantations in Manakin Town, New Kent County, Virginia, and Amelia, Virginia, d. 1740. One of their sons was Lt. William Marchbanks, an Officer in the French and Indian War, Surveyor of Halifax County, Virginia, and my direct ancestor. 6. ELIZABETH ECHOLS, b. about 1704; d. Unknown; m. (1) WILLIAM MURPHY; b. about 1704; d. Unknown; m. (2) GIDEON SMITH; one of the first landowners in today's Bedford County, Virginia for whom the well known Smith Mountain, Smith Mountain Lake, and Smith River, Virginia are all named. 7. JOSEPH ECHOLS, b. 1704, Virginia; d. Bef. 1794, Halifax County, North Carolina. 8. RICHARD ECHOLS, m. CATHERINE EVANS. Richard was one of the founders of Amelia County, Virginia and its first Sheriff, great grandfather of the Hon. Maj. Gen. Richard Milner Echols, hero of the Mexican-American War who served as President of the Georgia Senate and for whom Echols County, Georgia is named, and grandfather of the Hon. David Bates, longtime member of the Virginia Legislature who also served as President of the Georgia Senate, Hon. Col. Joseph Hubbard Echols, member of the Confederate Congress. Arrangements by Corley Funeral Home = = = = = Corsicana Daily Sun, 2 Mar 2007 Corsicana, Texas Purdon man hurt in major accident By Bob Belcher A Purdon man was seriously injured Thursday in an accident involving a small pick-up and an 18-wheeler hauling a mobile home. The accident occurred shortly after 3 p.m. Thursday on FM 744, approximately six miles east of Corsicana. Bobby Cave, 54, of Purdon was traveling west on FM 744 in his pick-up truck approaching a narrow bridge just west of FM 1126. The 18-wheeler, driven by John Thibodeaux, 52, of Chandler, was hauling part of a double-wide mobile home heading east on FM 744. Thibodeaux is a driver for Rolling Homes Transit Company of Tyler. The two vehicles collided at about the mid-point of the bridge, pinning Cave's pick-up against the guard rail. The 18-wheeler dragged the pick-up the rest of the length of the bridge, coming to a rest at the end of the guard rail. Cave was pinned inside the truck, but was responsive. Emergency crews from the Corsicana and Blooming Grove Fire Department worked to extricate Cave, and he was taken by air ambulance to Parkland Hospital in Dallas. The driver of the 18-wheeler was not hurt in the accident. Trooper Matt McGinnis of the Texas Department of Public Safety is investigating the accident. The Navarro County Sheriff's Department also assisted with traffic control as FM 744 was shut down for over an hour and a half due to the accident. = = = = = Corley Funeral Home Website Obituary Rev.
