Congratulations on taking the scientific plunge. It is so important to have many samples in any scientific study. Your results will not only help you but many others. For example we will be able to see if you match Randall Cave, who has his line proven back to John Cave the Revolutionary Soldier who married Sarah Wilson Brown. (Other people have this line "proven" back to John Cave who died ca 1721.) And it will be a baseline for other Virginia Caves to test against. We still need in my opinion several Caves to test from each line. Below are the Cave lines of several past and present members of the Cave Family History Society in England. I see several mistakes...but I wonder how to contact some of these people... Michael T Randall Cave (481) Virginia and South Carolina Randall’s father is D Wheaton cave (1928) and grandfather John B (1875) of South Carolina. Then to James B (1837); John Bunyon (1799) and Elizabeth Rountree; Benjamin (c1780) of South Carolina and Elizabeth Rountree and finally (at the moment) John (c 1745) of Virginia. Rick Anderson (379) Cave of Virginia Descended from Benjamin Cave (1703) of Virginia through two sons, William and Richard. The lines of descent come together through his mother, Sona Cave who married Murl Anderson. This is achieved over seven generations. Rick is the centre of information on the Cave’s of Virginia. His Web site features in "Computers and Family History". Michael Cave (368) Cave of Virginia Descended from Benjamin Cave of Virginia in the beginning of the 18th Century, and his father John (1678-1726) and Elizabeth Travers (1689-?). Benjamin married Hannah Bledsoe in 1720 in Orange County. They had a son John, and so it goes on. Rick Anderson is in the same family group. Carolyn Cave Black (383) Cave of Virginia Descended from the Cave’s of Virginia. Carolyn’s ancestry goes back to Henry Cave born 1769 in Carolina County Virginia, who married Miss Smith. We then come to the Benjamin Cave who arrived in Va in 1725, and the question of their origin. Some say England and descended from William Cave of Pickwell, 1637-1713. It is unfortunate that the only recorded children are, Elizabeth (1663), William (1664-1665), mary (1669), Ann (1671), William (1674) and John (1676-1677). My records of Benjamin over this period are: Benjamin of Cold Overton bapt 21Apr1665, son of John (c1638) and Ann; Benjamin of Leicester bapt 22May1698, son of James and Mary. There may be others, I am sure, but they have still to be found Betty K Shuffield (390) Cave of Virginia Descended from Martha Cave (1827) who married (1st) Willam C Knight (2nd to John Thomas Carver). Her father was Henry W (1800) and Nancy Jane Bass. Henry had migrated from Clarke Co Alabama to Clarke Co Mississipi and then to Milam Co Texas. His parents were John (1774) and Lucinda Causey, then John (1757) and Sarah Wilson Brown of Barnwell Co South Carolina. This latter John was a veteran of the American Revolution. ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com.
Jim, I don't know who sent his dna in but I suspect it must be Brian Cave, whose genealogy from the Cave Family History Society in England is as follows (from their website..no other details available). [Brian Cave (452) Cave of Maidford, NTH Brian’s parents were Richard (1912) and Eileen C Brewer, then Henry George (1881) and Elizabeth Schofield of Maidford; Richard (1832) and Fanny Reeve; William (1797) and Susannah Hollaway; Richard (1775) and Ann Cooper of Thorpe Mandeville; Thomas (c1745) and Sarah Bartlett; Thomas (1714) and Elizabeth of Guilsborough; William (1685) and Joice; John (1661) and his first wife Elizabeth Seamark; John (1624) and Elizabeth Hide and so to Valentine (c1585) and Agnes. ] I think that there was another lineage I saw which indicated that this Valentine Cave died in 1652...so this probably is the same man. Obviously it would not be the Valentine Cave that Jane found, whose will was probated in 1606. I guess I will join that Society..then they give out the emails of members. Alternatively I can ask Hugh Cave, President of the Society, whom I have been "email corresponding" with. Jane, In all of your many searches, have you ever run across a "Valentine Cave" living in England in the 1500s - 1600's....probably in Northamptonshire? Thanks! Hello Cave Listers, My step grandmother Louise Cave, who was born in Seaforth, Lancashire, Eng., was of Irish descent. Her father William Cave was born in Cork City 1846 to Stephen Cave and Letitia Keays, (although I suspect she may have been married before). William became a sea captain. He died in Cheshire, Eng. His father Stephen Cave (b. c 1820) was a successful corn merchant. Stephen's father was John Cave but mother's name is not known. So you see there are Irish connections. Barbara Roberts (Australia)

His name first occurs as a Gent. of the Chapel Royal on the occasion of the Coronation of K. Charles II, 23 Apl. 1661. Pepys thus notices the occurrence mentioned in the text, under date of 1 Feb.: "I hear how two men last night, justling for the wall about the new Exchange, did kill one another, each thrusting the other through; one of them of the King's Chapel, one CAVE, and the other a retayner of my Lord Generall Middleton's." The old Cheque Book of the Chapel Royal gives a more minute account, thus: "Mr. John CAVE, one of the Gentlemen of His Majesties Chappell Royall, goeing home to his lodging upon the 30th of January, about 7 or 8 of ye clock in the evening, about the new Exchange, was by one James Elliott, a Scott, run through the body, of which wound he departed this life the 16th day of February following, 1663." ------------------------------------------------------ The Annual Register - or a View of the History, Politics and Literature for the Year 1815 January: On Monday last an inquisition was taken at Piddington, in this county, on view of the bodies of Robert CAVE, and Jane, his wife, who were supposed to have been wilfully poisoned; when, upon an investigation of upwards of seven hours, it appeared that Robert CAVE, who usually worked at Horton about a mile distant) was accustomed to have something hot provided for him on his return home in the evening, generally some broth, and a pudding or dumpling: that on the preceding Wednesday evening he had suet dumpling prepared for him by his wife, the whole of which he ate, and found no ill effects from it: that on the next day (Thursday) she also prepared another suet dumpling for him, taking the flour out of the same bowl, and the suet from the same place as on Wednesday. In eating it he complained of its taste, and only ate about half of it. His wife then ate part of the remainder, giving some to her eldest daughter, who only took a very small quantity. They were all very soon afterwards taken extremely ill, and Jane CAVE died in about five hours; Robert CAVE lived only about eight hours, and the daughter is now very ill, but likely to recover. It did not in any way appear how or in what manner the poison was introduced into, or got mixed with the flour or suet, both of which were strongly impregnated with arsenic; no person having been in the house since the making of the dumpling on the Wednesday, except the family of the deceased. Verdict - died by Poison. --------------------------------------------------- A Dictionary of Artists of the English School; Painters, Sculptors, Architects, Engravers and Ornamentists CAVE, Henry, topographical draftsman. He practised in the early tinted manner, painting landscapes with cattle and figures, pleasing but weak imitations of Berghem, and was employed in Teaching. There are also by him some small works of the same class in oil. Concerning linking English and Virginia caves, John and William are extremely common names, David however is somewhat more unusual. A David Cave was claimed as a headright in 1669 by William Taylor. This apparently same David Cave signed a petition concerning St. Stephen's Parish in King and Queen County in I believe 1682. This is the same area where John Cave lived. However I wonder if there are records of a David Cave in Northamptonshire, England about this time. That he signed his name in the 1600's may be an indication that he was very well educated. Since we are starting to have the Tidewater Caves test their dna and there has been a Virginia - English exact match, does anyone know of a male line Cave descendant from Benjamin the Burgess? I think Sue Ellen and Jim were speaking with a male Cave on ancestry.com recently about Benjamin? Maybe Dr. Troutman would know? And again, at 12 markers there is an exact match for the Virginia born Cave and eight English Caves,. and one possible match (10 of 12) who goes back to the main Cave line with William the Conqueror..the Burkes Peerage Caves. At 37 markers there is an exact match with the same Virginia born Cave and Valentine Cave of England in the 1500's. Sorry I didn't reply sooner, I have been a bit under the weather. You can go to familytreedna.com to get a description of some of their services and prices. There already is a Cave Surname Research Project, on going, so you can get a discount. Also, many families set up angel funds, in other words they pay for someone else's test. I would strongly suggest testing at 37 markers if not more. The 12 doesn't give enough information. In a message dated 6/16/2007 2:35:18 PM Eastern Daylight Time, [email protected] writes: Michael, have you any more ID of John Cave b. 1745? Concerning this John Cave of 1745.... T. Randall Cave has his genealogy as follows: Virginia and South Carolina Randall’s father is D Wheaton cave (1928) and grandfather John B (1875) of South Carolina. Then to James B (1837); John Bunyon (1799) and Elizabeth Rountree; Benjamin (c1780) of South Carolina and Elizabeth Rountree and finally (at the moment) John (c 1745) of Virginia. I looked on the internet and, with no sources as usual, found that this John Cave was supposedly the son of John Cave, the grandson of David Cave and Sarah Moore, and great grandson of John Cave d. ca 1720. The John Cave of 1745 (his birthdate differs according to different sources) was a Revolutionary Soldier, and removed from Virginia to Barnwell County, South Carolina. He married Sarah Wilson Brown of Brown's Cove, Albemarle County, Virginia. He had the same naming patterns as did the other Caves of that era and area, his sons included David Benjamin, and John. Perhaps we can contact some of the descendants of this John to see if they have sources to show the generations earlier back. Since Randall is presumably a descendant of David Cave, it would be interesting to see if Jim Cave's dna matches his as well. In a message dated 6/16/2007 2:35:18 PM Eastern Daylight Time, [email protected] writes: Michael, have you any more ID of John Cave b. 1745? Also, how do they get his dna to test for the match?? Jim Cave As far as getting John of 1745's dna...they don't get his dna. Males pass down their y chromosome/dna, basically unaltered, generation to generation. This dna can be measured by "markers." While there is an occasional change/mutation when it passes father to son, it is basically the same chromosome. So Jim you have the same y chromosome as your earliest known ancestor Robert Cave did. And this is the same y-dna (with perhaps a mutation or two) that your Cave line had for hundreds upon hundreds of years before. Now that is not your whole genetic makeup...it is just a small part of your genetic soup. Like everyone else you are half your mother and father, 1/4 your grandparents, 1/8 your grandparents, etc etc. Likewise, all Cave descendants, even when they don''t have the Cave surname, also have this Cave y dna, its just that only males with the surname can have it measured. This includes of course all females, and males with other surnames. For example my last name is Walker, and I had my Walker y dna tested. However as a descendant of Mary Cave Echols, I also have Cave dna, which incidentally is almost certainly the same as the y dna that you carry and which can be measured. With John Cave of 1745, his male line descendant, T. Randall Cave, had his y dna tested. He initially had 12 markers tested, which doesn't tell too much because it is the least precise. However it matched eight others exactly and two more closely. This meant Randall shares a common male Cave ancestor with all the exact matches, and probably the close matches. (The close matches wouldn't be exact because of the "mutations" mentioned above.) Randall then upgraded to 37 markers. This is more precise because it measures more markers. It also can generally tell whether someone else is a close relation or a further relation. So Randall's genetic signature matched 37 out of 37 markers with a male Brian Cave of England, whose earliest known Cave ancestor was Valentine Cave, born ca 1585 Northampton, England. This indicates a probable close relation. But besides this match, two additional Caves have upgraded to 37 markers, and Randall Cave matches them I believe 36/37, and 35/37. He is therefore also fairly closely related to these Cave men as well. Interestingly, with a big enough sample (i.e., enough Caves testing), you can pinpoint where mutations occur.
